I would suggest considering an external USB enclosure.

If it's a standard 3.5 inch HDD, here's an appropriate amazon search:

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_n_feature_keywords_3?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A160354011%2Ck%3Aexternal+USB+enclosure%2Cp_n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin%3A6528338011&keywords=external+USB+enclosure&ie=UTF8&qid=1505591259&rnid=6528328011

imo better to go for a mid-range one when it comes to price. $20 is enough to get a nice one.

Then you just insert your SATA drive, plug it over USB (3.0 for quickest transfers) and then get the data off.

Upload your files, then the old HDD can be used as a periodic local backup if you want.

Noticed you posted a pic of the HDD and yeah it's a standard 3.5 inch HDD.

I've purchased and used this enclosure:

Is this a WD external HD?

There could be a problem with the enclosure/wiring itself if the drive is passing a SMART test.

Try swapping cables, get a screwdriver and take the drive out and put it in one of these:

That could work and save you a lot of money, and it's not difficult to set up.

Do you hear any clicking or other noises from the drive when it's on? That could be indicative of a hardware failure if the platters keep banging into stuff. Just some ideas

I wouldn't recommend a portable external drive like the one you're using for something like Plex where the drive is powered for long periods of time. The internals are typically old/slow 2.5" drives which aren't designed to run 24/7.

I would recommend a NAS system probably because that's what I want. You can buy one yourself or if you happen to have some old computer parts lying around or a buddy that does, you might be able to piece together a FreeNAS system on your own.

If you're still trying to stay economical I have a USB 3.0 Hard Disk Drive Enclosure that I've had running on a NAS for over a year. I have a 3.5" 1TB Western Digital Red drive inside and have had no problems. For my purposes it's not running Plex but still does file transfers, and writes/reads 2-15GB every day.

Do you plan on running this hard drive outside the case all the time or just to retrieve some data..

If you want to use the drive as an external drive.. Then get an external 3.5 inch case for it.

Like this with or without a fan.

If it is just temporary then what you asked about is fine.

I have one very similar to this ( I bought mine in China) just search 3.5 usb external case...you'll find many. My personal preference for 3.5 I like external powered...2.5 usb powered cases

This would work too. I bought an external usb 3.0 enclosure:

Inateck FE3001 Aluminum USB 3.0 Hard Disk Drive Enclosure for 2.5"/3.5" Sata HDD and SSD, Support UASP and 10TB Drives https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UAA4J6G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_F2iSAbN8VG2TZ

And used a HDD I had from a desktop that ran 7200 rpm. If you don’t already have one search to get one that’s around 1 TB. you can certainly get a smaller one but it’ll be 500gb and almost exact same price.

I'd just stick with R-Studio, but you could also use TestDisk (https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) . For your external drive recommendation I prefer just buying an external enclosure and the drive separate. That way you're getting a real SATA drive (should it need to be recovered someday) and an enclosure. Makes it more versatile.

I like this one, some people dislike the external power supply though. https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Aluminum-Enclosure-Support-FE3001/dp/B00UAA4J6G But it's got a good USB to SATA chipset. There's tons of options available, just depends upon your needs.

Ahh, never even thought to look at that. I guess it would have to be like this or this then. Thanks!
