I'd recommend the ASUS TUF 505. It has a Ryzen 3750H which is a decent CPU. For the GPU it has a full desktop grade 1660ti. It also has a 120HZ IPS panel with great colour accuracy. All this for just $1099.

At a nearly $1800 budget, I'd personally be more ambitious than a 1660Ti. I mean, the MaxQ variant with Ryzen chips can already be had for $1100. Depends on where your priorities are, sure, but I'd think above $1200 is where you should expect better than "overall value" shopping and can be a little choosy.

You need a laptop with at least a GTX 1060 (closest to the gtx 970 listed on the game's steam page). The laptop you linked does not have a dedicated GPU but only the integrated Intel thing, which can't do anything beyond facebook games. Personally, I would look for a laptop with at least a GTX 1660 Ti (if it has to be a laptop and can't be a desktop), since that would at least be a tiny bit future proof.

For example:

GTX 1060

https://www.amazon.com.au/Acer-Predator-Helios-Black-i7-8750/dp/B07CTHLX8C/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

https://www.umart.com.au/Infinity-17-3in-FHD-144Hz-i7-8750H-GTX-1060-256GB-SSD-Gaming-Laptop--S1060-CD_50812G.html

or

GTX 1660 Ti https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-Gaming-Laptop-15-15-99-inches/dp/B07QQB6DC1/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=laptop+gtx+1660&qid=1559039759&s=gateway&sr=8-3 (CPU isn't the greatest however)

If you happen to have a display (or you'd have to buy a cheap one) a Desktop PC would be either quite a bit cheaper for similar / slightly better specs or way more powerful at a similar pricepoint, e.g. https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/WFg2vn (RTX 2060/2070 as GPU and higher CPU if you want more power, Windows can be found online for cheap)

u/246Louie · 3 pointsr/Clemson

My freshman year (2 years ago) I ended up buying an $1100 laptop off Amazon with a i7 7700HQ and 1050 ti (4GB). This was plenty of hardware for my solidworks (similar to CAD) class. My issue with all of the laptops that Clemson recommends are that you are paying almost twice as much for a slim, sleeker laptop. I'm not gonna lie, it is nicer to have a laptop like this though. I have a very nice Desktop (which I also had in my dorm in RiSE), so I sold my bulky, heavy gaming laptop and bought a $350 laptop and a $80 SSD specifically for class and couldn't be happier. I should also note I'm in IE, not ME.

I also want to explain that, in my solidworks class, A LOT of people had Macbooks, of all things. Clemson has a server or something that you can connect to to run Solidworks. I'd assume this is the same for CAD, but wouldn't be sure? If I had known this I never would have wasted my money on that first "gaming" laptop.

I also just found this laptop on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-IPS-Type-R7-3750H-GeForce-TUF505DU-EB74/dp/B07QQB6DC1

I believe this laptop will outperform any that you have listed above. I'm actually shocked how good this laptop looks, and slim as well.

If you can get your hands on blue light filter/glasses then you should check it out before you buy a new laptop to try to solve a problem you are not sure of, with that said if you are going to buy a new laptop anyway then I would go with either this ASUS TUF or this Acer Predator Helios 300 2019 version because it comes with everything you need, great value for money, 144Hz screen which is great for fast paced games, easily upgradeable, Latest CPU and GPU, Very good heat management, and here is a more detailed review :

  • The top of the laptop plus the keyboard and palm area are metal.
  • Screen bright enough for using outside in the shade but not in direct sunlight.
  • GPU is powerful enough for the mentioned games to be played on high settings.
  • Here is benchmark for the GPU performance.
  • Laptop comes with Optimus to conserve battery.
  • Keyboard is great, quiet, and have a nice feel.
  • Keyboard has a numpad but narrower than the rest of the keyboard, and the arrow buttons shifted.
  • Speakers are at the bottom and kinda muffed so a headset is recommended for when you are gaming.

Here's one I just looked into for myself, and seeing as our requirements are similar, I think this will work for you as well. Asus TUF FX505DT-EB74. This spec comes with a Ryzen 7 3750H, 16gigs of RAM, GTX 1660Ti, 15.6in 120Hz Full HD display, and 256GB+1TB of storage. It also has MIL-STD-810 military grade certification, so at the very least, build quality should be good

u/Onui · 2 pointsr/GamingLaptops

If you are in US, IMO this is better than what you listed and is cheaper.

ASUS TUF

Great looking 120Hz screen, 1660ti, plenty of IO, and a good keyboard. It's great for the price :)

u/JCAirabit · 1 pointr/laptops

If I were you I'd consider this:

ASUS TUF (2019) Gaming Laptop, 15.6” 120Hz Full HD IPS-Type, AMD Ryzen 7 3750H, GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, 16GB DDR4, 256GB PCIe SSD + 1TB HDD, Gigabit WiFi 5, Windows 10 Home, TUF505DU-EB74 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QQB6DC1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_kxhYCbZMSD8Y3

Very good pricing for a laptop with a cars that's almost as good or equivalent to the GTX 1070 for $1100 and with the 1660 coming out there's no reason to buy the 1070 because of the price difference

Or if you can spend a little extra:

Omen by HP 2019 15-Inch Gaming Laptop, Intel i7-8750H Processor, NVIDIA RTX 2060 6 GB, 16 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD, 1 TB HDD, VR Ready, Windows 10 Home (15-dc1030nr, Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07NDYBX4G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_XyhYCb086VCH9

The new 20 series cards draw less heat because of the new architecture not needing as much power. However the Omen does tend to hit the 100 degree Celsius mark. If you want something like the Omen with better cooling but unfortunate price increase look at the LEGION Y740. It's almost $1600 I believe

Ok, so I looked through recs and was looking for a laptop designed to handle some abuse, so i think I'm going to go with an ASUS TUF. My old laptop has two sticks of 8 GB RAM that I suspect are fine, so I was thinking of going with this: [ASUS TUF config 1] (https://www.amazon.com/Gaming-TUF505DU-KB71-GTX1660Ti-Windows-Notebook/dp/B07S37JY44) and shoving in another stick of RAM

But was also looking at [ASUS TUF config 2] (https://www.amazon.com/R5-3550H-Processor-Graphics-FX505DT-AH51-Keyboard/dp/B07VBK4SYS) and [ASUS TUF config 3] (https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-IPS-Type-R7-3750H-GeForce-TUF505DU-EB74/dp/B07QQB6DC1)

Any thoughts on the value of going with one of the upgraded models? The most intense thing I'd want to do is run AAA games on min settings. Should I just stick with config 2 for the lower price tag?

Edit: Amazon reviews are pointing to less than 2 hour battery life and constant screen black outs so might still be searching...

Hi, maybe the ASUS TUF FX505DU would be a good choice for you. Ryzen 7 processor, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1660 Ti graphics card, and a 1080p 120Hz display. It is on the expensive side, but better than anything else in your regular budget range.

You can also buy it Renewed under a separate tab with the exact same specs for $860, if you’d rather not go with the 30 day warranty from amazon warehouse.

17 inch 144hz? Lol.no way. The cheapest I can think of is the Acer Triton 500.
There's is no point putting a 1660ti with a 144hz panel as it won't get to 144fps most of the time anyway. The Triton has a 2060 and is probably the cheapest with a 144hz.

If you can settle for 120 and 15 inches then

A GTX 1050 will be fairly underwhelming in GTA and Far Cry, and a Core i7 is likely far too much for what you're doing; I would recommend a GTX 1660 Ti as the best price/performance entry-level laptop card right now. Check out this ASUS laptop with a 1660 Ti for $1,000. The R7 3750H processor is a downgrade from the i7 9750H, but totally worth it because the upgrade from 1050/1650 to 1660 Ti will be a lot more impactful.
