JBL LSR308 is better quality and louder if you look at the conversion of watts into Db between the two.
But I think the LG's (Are you looking at these?: http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-CM4550-Subwoofer-Bluetooth/dp/B010XHCQGK) you are looking at have 3 speakers... plus it comes with the main receiver.
You will probably still need the main receiver, or a central computer/laptop. If you already have one of those (I assume you have something figured out if you DJ) then buy those good JBL speakers. If not then I guess you could skimp and get the little LGs (but you get the whole system, which is good).
Have you looked into SONOS? Pricey but worth the investment... hit up the alumni if you can- good luck!

My PLX-500 is currently just hooked up to my LG shelf stereo system. It has an RCA input, it's cheap, puts out big sound, and sounds good enough for me. :)

Yeah I would definitely make people aware that the only audio outs are optical and bluetooth and the bluetooth part can be temperamental. I was counting on 3.5mm out. I even moved my 2.1 LG Stereo CM4550 to my bedroom to use as external speakers. And the TV is still having issues connecting to it. So when it can't even reliably connect to their own products, you know it's an issue. I'm pretty sure it's a software issue as well since resetting the TV allows it to successfully connect. It's just if I then turn off the tv and try to reconnect the next day, it won't connect. It will search and see the device but fail to connect. And yes, the LG is on the bluetooth mode. I've done extensive troubleshooting. I'm a Software Developer so I'm a more advanced (read: not completely moronic) user.

I just looked at the 940E specs on Sony's site and it says that for headphone out it has

>1 (Side/Hybrid with Headphone and Subwoofer Out)

So it looks like it does have 3.5mm out. Can you confirm it does have headphone out? Because with my LG I saw a headphone port and assumed it was an out port. It's 3.5mm in. That makes no sence to me because why would anyone want to go out of their way to play something on the crappy internal speakers?

Here is a picture of my bedroom. Yes that’s my kitty sleeping on my laptop. Tvs are a 40” Changhong LED, 65” LG OLED, and 48” Samsung LCD. I usually use one for watching Netflix or Hulu and the other to simultaneously play PS4. I rarely use the Changhong. Probably should move it to my family room.

So we're a rowing team and we practice inside a gymnasium on rowing machines(here's what they sound like, just to give you an idea), which generate a decent amount of noise when there's a bunch of them going at the same time. The system we used before was 2.1 system that was almost identical to this one. When we turned those all the way to the maximum and set our phone to max volume, it was usually loud enough.

1000 Sqft. is a pretty large space so you'll need some decent speakers. You'll also need some decent power.

You are going to need an amp to power the speakers unless you get powered speakers or a shelf system. I'm thinking for you the shelf system is the way to go.

  • LG CM4550 $200 is about as good as you're going to get with your budget. 2.1 system with a head unit that included USB, Bluetooth and RCA aux input. Get a RCA to 3.5mm cable for most sources bluetooth for others.
