I recommend the following:

Bose Soundlink Mini

Sony SRS-XB3

Sony SRS-HG1 (this one is pretty cool, got lots of features)

Why those? There's an option to turn off auto-off, which turns off the speaker when it's idle with no music playing after a certain amount of time. Which is essential to the echo unless you enjoy manually turning your speaker on before you connect it with the echo.

They also have pretty good sound quality.

Wow. Okay, that's fairly comprehensive and impressive. I'm taking it on step by step.

> General- White female, aged 25+, but I have no idea really and that's my best guess,

The age is bang on. TMI, but I'm mixed race and partly-white and on the light olive skinned side of things (I'm a genetic milkshake)

> single,

huh what clued you into that?

> lives in an apartment, most likely alone but maybe a roommate. In an urban area, either a built up town (ie, university, city apartments), or a neighbourhood.

I do indeed live alone in a big city! Again, how'd you figure this out?

> You are a fairly busy person, and you have a demanding profession/job/degree, as it perhaps looks like you have finished high school or are doing something instead.

Yes, I do. I'm starting a financial services company.

> Music is important to you, and you use it as a means of expression or identity

Yes, it is.

> Personal- You like to try and get an early start in the morning, and keep to a schedule.

I'm actually quite the opposite. I can't get up in the morning, but I do try and keep working through the night if I can't. But most of the times I'm up in the AM automatically.

> But, you tend to be disorganised sometimes, so you need to keep on top of what you're doing at times.

I have ADHD.

> You don't drive, and likely don't plan on doing so for a while, or for now at least. You use Uber to get around fairly frequently, and are familiar with different versions in different places in order to travel.

I don't know how to drive and I find car ownership to be passé. If I ever have more money, I'd probably spend time restoring an old maserati or corvette and modernizing it. Take from that what you will.

> Like I said, music is important to you, so you want to listen to it properly. You have either a Bluetooth speaker or some headphones, maybe both.

Yes! And yes I do have a bluetooth speaker; https://www.amazon.com/Bose-SoundLink-Bluetooth-Speaker-Carbon/dp/B00WK47VEW and I plan on upgrading to this once that nears the end of its life; https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013CO3GQK/

(I'm not really someone who buys according to brand, but both of these cases are an example of good design and value in an otherwise overpriced product line)

And yes, I have headphones too. But I still with the cheaper apple earpods on that one as I run through these quite fast and it wouldn't be fiscally responsible to go through an expensive one like that.

> Phone use- It looks like you mainly use your phone for function, and this is summed up nicely by the stock wallpaper. You use apps like Reddit for entertainment, but I can't find or think of anything else that would fit, so it seems logical to say that you use your phone mainly for its intended use.

Yup.

> You use messenger mainly to communicate with friends, but don't use any other of the social medias (no Facebook, snapchat, Instagram etc). This leads me to believe you are more of a persons person, and this different style of social participation helped with trying to get an age range. You use messenger but not Facebook- you have a Facebook account, but maybe you don't use it so much in favour of more social interactions.

That is true. I use FB as more of an address book than not. I prefer taking people out to coffee and talking through things. However, I'd once again admit that I'm not above using Facebook to keep track of people.

> Day to day- You have an uber booked in this screencap, and what is likely an alarm for it at 2pm (it being 9:38am question, why is it April 1st in this screencap?).

It's an old screencap from my archives. I recently broke this phone so I thought it would be fun to see what people can deduce from these screencaps given that, "it's dead, Jim."

> You probably use uber, lyft and others to get to and from your studies/profession.

I go out quite a lot. So I used it to commute on a daily basis to and fro from meetings, restaurants, art galleries, and the sort

> You have an alarm set for 2pm on a Saturday, and you're up by 9:40am so I'd wager you usually wake up at 7:00-8:30am in the week. This could show that you do something in the day, but whether it's work or education I can't work out, but I'm edging towards education.

I just work most days of the week and/or do projects on my own.

> Online presence- You are mainly a Google based person. Chrome is your go-to search engine, Gmail is your mail platform, you use Google maps, and you very likely have a G+ account

Nope! I don't have a G+ account

> and most likely a YouTube account linked to this, but you only watch videos, etc.

Yes, I do use Youtube a lot though.

> It wouldn't surprise me if you had a Google phone or some kind of similar android.

I actually own a Nexus, which I'm upgrading to an iPhone, but I still miss the old Nexus 5 series because of how reliable and ergonomic those phones were. Their rubberized polycarbonate back felt so good in my hand.

I don't really have a love for Android though. I do prefer iOS; I just loved their old Nexus 5 hardware.

>Your main communication methods are through text, call, or the messenger app.

Well, that and Signal + Telegram for business. And email for everything else. I also do video calls through appear.in.

> You probably have a small to medium sized group of friends based on my guesses so far, so just one active conversation looks about normal.

That's actually a permanently stickied convo. It's someone I deeply love. I know a lot of people --- my web of acquaintances is probably well over 1k, but I do have small group of friends.

> You probably use Reddit moderately often. I haven't looked through your post history as per your request, but I'd guess I'd see posts for hobby subs and probably just your general interests.

Well, have a look and tell me what you think :)

> I don't know what kind of use Reddit would see from you, but seeing as though your phone offers almost no entertainment outside of your music, I'd wager to say that you likely use Reddit alot of the time you're bored and on your phone.

Yes, or I go read something.

> Though saying this, it seems you usually only use your phone for whatever its needed for at the time, so again I don't know how much time you'd spend online.

I spend my entire day online running my company, compulsively reading (everything), talking with friends and family, organizing stuff, and so on.

> Organisation- It appears that you like to try and stay organised by using apps like Clue to be on top of your feminine hygiene, Trello to organise events or perhaps as part of work (?)- trello here suggests a lot of things but tells me that you like to coordinate or be part of a team, and this is either beneficial or necessary to your daily routine/profession etc.

I use Trello for everything. Everything.

> Judging by everything else, I'd say you use the app to get things done around the house or just in general, and this helps give a level of stability and takes some of the stress off your hands

Winner winner chicken dinner!

> You're quite a disorganised person, but you like to know what you're doing and when, so you do make up for this.

What gave this away? I thought that the minimalist aesthetic made me look organized?

> If you aren't in education, then my best guess is you either like to travel (which I don't see much evidence of here), or you have a profession that requires it. There isn't much evidence either for or against any of this, so I just presented my best guess.

Yes, I love to travel and hope to turn my company into something where I can perpetually travel.

Okay, this is pretty bang on in other respects. What else can you tell about me now that you have more information?

I knew they had some kind of Bluetooth thing

http://www.amazon.com/Bose-SoundLink-Bluetooth-Speaker-Carbon/dp/B00WK47VEW

It's actually $200, and probably sounds like something 1/4 the price such is everything Bose makes.

> Preferably uses AA batteries

You are one of us: r/AAMasterRace.

I asked a question about bluetooth devices for linking audio stuff together. The answers I got were mostly about AA battery speakers:

  • No AA Bluetooth devices exist? : r/AAMasterRace

The ones designed to work as guitar amplifiers would probably work for your friend. I'm not sure what you mean by this:

    > No Bluetooth, or Bluetooth can be completely turned off

Doesn't most Bluetooth turn off when not in use?

I have a Bose portable speaker that I got way before I standardized on AA batteries, but it does have a replaceable lithium battery, so it's not so bad. It supports external power too. It can do Bluetooth, but also takes a standard 3.5 mm audio cable. I assume when the audio cable is in use, Bluetooth would be off. You have to manually push a button on it to turn Bluetooth on, and you push another button to switch to cable. I think the fact it doesn't automatically switch is how you can be reasonable sure Bluetooth is completely off to conserve power.

I bought the first model of it:

  • AmazonSmile: Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker (Discontinued by Manufacturer): Home Audio & Theater

There is a newer model I haven't tried:

  • AmazonSmile: Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker II (Carbon): Home Audio & Theater

My only complaint with mine is it's too aggressive about turning off to save power, even when it's on external power. That isn't a problem in most cases, and other than not supporting AA batteries (it can use AA batteries externally), it's perfect. It's probably the loudest one I could find, but I suspect some of the cheap AA battery guitar amplifiers could compete for loudness, but not audio quality.

There are a lot of AA battery guitar amplifiers on the market, and I'm sure you can find one that doesn't have Bluetooth. Most of them are probably much cheaper than the Bose.

Does your friend already have rechargeable AA batteries?

So I'm moving to college in NYC in the fall, and I've been faced with the issue of how to fit my turntable in my dorm. I didn't want to lug my whole stereo setup there as it would take too much room, but it was looking like I had to. Until just now!

I got this speaker as a graduation gift so I had a speaker to connect my phone to in the dorms. It looks (and is) tiny but the sound quality is honestly pretty great - good stereo image, clear highs, low lows, etc. If I turn it up about halfway and leave it on my bed I can feel the bass vibrating through my mattress. Naturally it isn't up to par with, say, a vintage amp paired with some great speakers and there isn't an EQ on it (or at least I haven't discovered one), but sacrifices ya know?
I connected my turntable's stereo jacks to the preamp I already had for my existing setup (found here), then ran an [adaptor cable](https://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Audio-Cable-Splitter-1-Mini/dp/B00004Z5CP/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1465788718&sr=1-4&keywords=stereo+to+aux is the one I use) to the aux input on the speaker. Works like a charm!

I thought this would come in handy for anyone moving to an area with little space (like a dorm) who still wants to hold on to their record collection. Happy listening!

There are, like, a million Bluetooth speakers under 13“. What's your budget? Here's a really expensive one: Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker II (Carbon) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WK47VEW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_euSAxb8FDP811

> It may be suprising to see sound come from a small device but that doesn't make them unique or justified for the price tag.

It does make them somewhat unique, as few other companies focus on getting the most sound out of the smallest amount of space. Whether they're worth the price tag is subjective. If you appreciate sound quality and price over looks and size, then you're not their target audience. Wife approval factor is a pretty big deal, you see it all the time with all sorts of things.

> You are able to find a better quality system in the same form factor for a cheaper pricetag. How much cheaper? 1/2 to 1/3 the cost.

Like what, for example?
Where can I find something for $100 or less that beats the SoundLink Mini II, or something for $100 or less that outperforms the Acoustimass 3 Series V, or something for $500 or less that outperforms the Acoustimass 10 series V, and just for the heck of it, something that costs $2000 or less that outperforms the Lifestyle 650?

Now remember, whatever you suggest has to be the same form factor or smaller, and not look ugly as sin (because wife approval factor).
