I'm posting top-level so as not to get drawn into the ongoing debate.

Truly formal dress calls for no watch at all.

If you're wearing a watch, it isn't important whether the band is leather or metal. It matters far more the gestalt of proportions, design, etc.

Yeah, a leather band will generally look a little more formal than a metal band, but it depends on the leather and it depends on the metal. Which of these is more formal? IMO, it's a wash. Of course, this is a casual watch, but the comparison demonstrates things aren't always so simple.

I'm all for obsessing over minutiae, but the important thing is this: nobody will care whether your band is leather or metal. Nobody will care. Unless one looks substantially better than the other on your wrist and with your clothing. In which case, choose based on that, not based on perceived formality. Wear what looks better and what functions better.

Mostly, people associate metal bands with bracelets on clunky dive watches and the like; whereas, they associate leather with slim dress watches. If you wear metal with a suit, people will just assume you're being intentionally subversive — albeit, in a very minor way.

As far as pros go:

With metal you only need one band for all your shoes and belts, but with leather, you might want two or three.

Good leather will wear nicely with age, but metal will stay looking mostly the same.

I for my part go with this casio for almost 2 years now. My absolute favorite. Also have this one and considering buying a) or b).

Definitely going to buy this Braun watch, either in white or black. Iconic.

It's very similar to Braun watches:

There was another company making minimalist quartz watches, something like
"Industry Designs" or something like that, and they didn't look too bad. But they were selling $400 watches with quartz movements, which is kind of ridiculous.

Cheaper on Amazon at the moment.

I haven't really shopped watches in a while, but last time I ended up getting this Braun to replace my Timex. The look is a bit different though. If you want something closer to the Timex, you might like some models from Seiko or Citizen. Unfortunately everything mentioned is a bit above the Timex price point (~60-110$).
