Here's the album.

If you like this, check out what else we've done.

A side note: a few people have asked about the camera I use; most of the pictures we've posted were shot with a used Canon t2i and a 50mm, $100 lens. The camera records at a maximum resolution of 18 megapixels, which generates large, detailed images, but I think they're worth the hard drive space.

If you're learning to become a commercial photographer please for the love of fuck don't buy a powershot. That's not me being gear snobby (though some of your clients definitely will be), you won't learn much and a ton of essential skills will be essentially off limits. For $300 Buy an older used DSLR and either this lens or this lens (the latter is wider than the former)

It isn't about quality, any flagship smartphone will get you that, it's about flexibility. If the used camera bothers you, you can spend maybe $150 more and get an entry level dslr

Also, flume is great for instagram from a computer if you have a mac.

Folks, You can pick up a used body on Amazon for $350-400

That leaves $200 for 2 crap lenses and a spare battery. Sorry, but your offer is optimistic at best even with full docs and a bill of sale.

I would not touch this deal unless OP has retail boxes, papers, packaging and receipts and are willing to give a BILL OF SALE backed up with a copy of their ID (same as any pawnshop would want) .

That being said....

OP - if you have receipts, boxes and docs, try ebay. Run your auction for 10 days and set it up so it closes on a Sunday night. Take better pics detailing condition of lens front and rear glass, include pics showing serial numbers and POST the serial numbers on the ad. Thats how you get taken seriously.

If you are willing to do that, you should get a decent bid. I don't think you are going to get anyone to bid @ $600 for that kit on CL but you never know, sucker born every minute.

I'd suggest the Canon Rebel T2i. That is just the body, and I suggest to invest in a high quality lens. They also offer packages that come with lens that might interest you.

I'd also look into a Canon T2i. Its image quality is basically identical to the 7D as it shares hardware. It's also got the HD video capability, and all the same lenses fit. It's also $700 on Amazon right now.

I am seriously on the hunt for a DSLR myself right now. I was all set to purchase a 7D, but learning about the T2i has actually given me pause. It's way cheaper. The upside to the 7D is that the body is AWESOME. It's magnesium alloy, so it's very sturdy, a bit heavier, and feels wonderful in your hands. It's also weather sealed and can stand up to a beating. The T2i is mostly plastic and feels kind of cheap in comparison. The real question is whether the premium you pay for aesthetics and durability is worth it, as you pictures will come out looking the same.

I also agree that the 5D is overkill. I would totally strike it from your list if you haven't already.

Since you are pushing $1000 with the t3i I would say this winning combo is in your price range:

t2i body only |
best lens for the money

The T3i is ever so slightly better for video, if that is your priority. I like the 50mm 1.8 for video on either camera.

EDIT: I have both the 18-55mm and the 55-250mm. Both are decent, but you will outgrow them in 30 days.
The T2i is one of my cameras.

I have the T2i and its great. If you feel like spending a couple hundred more, you could look at the T3i. Its basically the same as the T2i with an updated movie mode and an adjustable screen.

Shopping list.

Canon T3i

Canon T2i - You can get used on Amazon for under $600.

Nifty Fifty

Canon Speedlite 430EX II

Here are my 2 cents:
We have a media course in my school, they use Canon t2i, although they are old they still take good quality photos. I believe that this is perfect for your 15 year old. They are about 220$ , Amazon.
It offers the bare basics of photography, so its perfect for beginners. Also at that price point, If your 15 year old ditches the hobby its a "good family camera"

body - http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0035FZJI0/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=used

there's always the nifty fifty for ~100, but if you want even faster you can get a nikkor 1.4 prime with an adapter for 120$ from ebay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NIKON-NIKKOR-S-NIPPON-KOGAKU-AUTO-F1-4-F-50MM-LENS-NON-AI-/320779102344?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item4aafeca888#ht_500wt_951

Viewfinders are 40$ on ebay.

transcend 32gig cards are also 40$.

"We're under budget!"

You can get a high quality camera and compact HD video recorder for just shy of $500. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-T2i-Processor-Body-Only/dp/B0035FZJI0 spend the leftover $100 on a decent lens, which you can surely find on amazon with a little research.

Prices on Amazon:

  • T2i Body: $599
  • T3i Body: $579

Are you seriously whining about saving $20 on a superior camera?
