Cities XL 2011 is $5 right now. Instead of buying Cities XL Platinum on Amazon for $20.99, buy and activate the 2011 version and purchase Platinum on Steam for $4.50. That way you can have both games for under $10.

Worth noting, Cities XL 2011 (Steam key) is also on sale on Amazon until the end of the month for $5. Then, after the Midweek Madness deal ends on Steam, you can upgrade to Platinum for $4.50 if you feel it's worth it. I've spent a few hours on it so far, and the complaints are valid, it's a bit sluggish even on a modern laptop (i7-3610QM, GT 650M, 16GB DDR3), but hey, it's still pretty fun being able to make a city-sized city.

The UI is a bit glitchy for me, too, but I think there's some UI mods out there to overhaul it, which might fix the issues I've had. (Some things are sluggish and I've had satisfaction display the wrong color/percentage until I click on it.)

For $5, I'm pretty happy with it. And I might even upgrade to Platinum soon, but I don't have to rush into it, the $4.50 deal for owners of 2011/2012 on Steam is there to stay.

It was interesting how the satisfaction was handled differently between the games. Really, I think they're both interesting systems. I liked the zoning and resource systems in SimCity better though. In CitiesXL, there are too many options, and you choose what social class moves in, rather than having it be affected by the surroundings. I liked being able to manage the logistics of the processor/computer/TV factories in SimCity and I felt the data views and presentation of the statistics was done better in SimCity, too. However, the variety of roads I could create and the large city sizes in CitiesXL are what truly made this game enjoyable for me. It was no fun trying to cram everything into a tiny little area called a "city" in SimCity.
