Civ V was my first strategy game, and I will say it probably has the best tutorial in any strategy game I've found, it tells you what you're meant to be doing as you play, so playing the game should be fine for your first time. Perhaps play Rome as their bonuses are solid, yet dull, in that they don't change the way you play particularly, so it's a good civilization to start with as there aren't any extra civ-specific things to worry about on top of the game. I would suggest also buying Brave New World if it's on sale (at the moment, you can get everything that isn't civ: BE at crazy low price: http://amzn.to/1Emjd4Q). BNW makes Civ V go from a merely decent-good game to an excellent game. That said, you might want to try playing Civ V without BNW first, so you don't get overwhelmed by all the new mechanics.

Note that url shorteners of any kind get your post automatically sent to the spam filter. It's a good idea to just shorten lengthy urls using reddit itself, like this.

Also, with Amazon links you can safely trim everything after the ASIN (the alphanumeric code, in this case B00KVQG1JW) and the link will still work. The rest is generally tracking stuff Amazon uses for its own purposes, including the search terms you used to find the product.

Civ4+Beyond the Sword is a masterpiece. My hours: 31(vanilla), 272(BtS), 18(Colonization), 51min(warlords)

There's no reason to play Vanilla. Colonization is a separate, incomplete, generally crap game, though has beautiful water. Warlords is only worth playing for the campaigns; BtS has all the features.

The game has aged well. It is $30 well spent though when on sale it is easily $10.

Currently you can get Civ3 complete, civ4 complete, and civ5 complete for $28

incidentally the 2k humble bundle will almost definitely get civ games next week if 2k is selling them so cheap
