> Things to do while outside. No room to kick around a soccer ball or toss around a Frisbee.

  • Get a drink or a roll of mints out of the vending machine, or bring snack-sized chocolate bars and stick 'em in the fridge. Take these outside with you. Stretch. Drink a full glass of water. Something routine, so you can associate the code-solving with a particular activity again.

    > Did you notice any change in your daily thought process? Any perceptual changes?

  • I haven't been stopped for very long, but my thought process is a lot different. I don't feel silly going out of my way to make good choices for my body, like buying organic food or taking aerobics classes. I enjoy being around people more. I'm no longer self-conscious about how I smell or anxious about getting away. I ask people more questions and I commit to more social activities; I'm genuinely interested in more things and more interactions. I don't feel so annoyingly superior to everything. (Remember, you'd be like, "This band is lame. I'm going to smoke," and then you'd miss something cool.) Aaand I can smell everything a lot better.

    > Has anybody here been able to not smoke a cigarette for a significant amount of time and later on have maybe two to three a year?

  • If you're addicted to nicotine, it's a drug addiction like any other. Very difficult to control. Another redditor put it this way: You'll "get away" with having one, but it's like putting a little hole in the wall you've built up. And then sometime down the road you'll have another (poke another hole), and another, and by the time the smokes start running together it's easy to just knock down the wall and start smoking again. If there are no holes in your wall you have a much better chance.

    > Is there any reasonable way to safely test one's propensity to relapse after a couple of years without actually relapsing?

  • Yeah, no. I don't recommend relapsing on purpose for science. It sounds like you don't really want to quit, and it's not going to work unless you really want to quit. For reals. No fucking around.

    > What kind of non-smoking coping mechanisms for high stress situations that in the past ended in a cigarette worked for those who have quit?

  • Take ten deep breaths. (Do all ten.)

  • Drink a 12oz glass of water.

  • Read this subreddit.
  • Take long walks in the city with headphones; listen to new podcasts

  • Sanded lemon drops

  • Apply scented hand lotion
