A little more info would definitely help with suggestions. Such as what's your budget? What actual shears are you looking for? There's Chunkers, straights, curved, thinners, blenders, in all kinds of sizes and types, or do you want just kind of suggestions for a basic set. Absolutely with scissors the more you pay the better the quality. Going cheap now could mean replacing them sooner and more expensive upkeep, at the same time your new so your likely not looking for something in the hundreds for a single shear haha. You also mention "Project at work" and "new scissors for us". Who else are you buying for? It's a little difficult to buy other people scissors because it's like buying shoes.

As a catch all though I absolutely recommend affordable grooming shears! All kinds of shears at different price points, but all of them are wonderful quality. I have their clearance 40 dollar shears and I love them. I also have another set of a straight and curve (sadly no longer made) I got used which are higher quality I adore. Also I highly recommend these shears for beginners in addition to any other scissors you get. These are great dirty work scissors. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005KSOBVG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PYZRCbK3V52DZ Your probly not going to want to do whole dogs or detail work with them (that's for your more expensive shears) but I LOVE these Conair shears for dirty work. Be it taking off some dirty coat real quick before the bath or snipping off hanging mats/poop. The more you baby your good shears the less maintenance you need and you likely won't have to replace them for years and years. Lastly I highly recommend joining the Facebook group GEM (groomers equiptment maintenance) you can see all you will ever need to know about shears and your equipment.
