I use D-Link Wireless Dual Band AC1200 Mbps USB Wi-Fi Network Adapter (DWA-182)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0099XFRIY/

As I use mine just for media storage and not backup this has met my needs fully.

Like everything, it depends. That looks like a just fine piece of hardware in general, but in your environment it just might not be cutting it.

To really know if its the right piece of gear or not you need to have some questions answered first:

  • Is your wifi signal strong or weak? You can use your smart phone and download an app called WiEye - it will tell you your signal strength in your given location.. You'll see your network name and then a minus (like "-73dbm") followed by a value. That's your signal strength. I'd say a good rule of thumb is 35 to 65 is just fine, 75 to 85 is alright, but you may see issues, 85 or more and I'd be surprised if you're NOT having problems.

  • Second thing is, what kind of environment are you in? Residential? Lots of other networks in the area(WiEye will show you how many are around)? How far away from your wireless router are you? What types of walls are in the middle? Any water (think fish tanks) inbetween you and it?

  • Third, this is a bit more advanced I'll try to keep this short, but there are two "bands": 2.4ghz and 5ghz. 2.4ghz is highly conjested in most areas and is highly susceptible to NON-wifi interference like microwaves, Bluetooth devices and cordless phones. Most home devices use the 2.4ghz, it does "go further" (300 feet in an open field) compared to 5ghz's 90feet...but in a home that's less an issue unless you're in a mansion. My advice is almost always to switch to 5ghz when possible! For that I'd recommend a 802.11ac router like this TP-Link Archer C7 AC1750 and then a compatable wireless card if you're laptop doesn't have one like this D-Link Dual Band

That's quite a bit of info, but it only barely scratches the surface of what could be the issue and its solutions. If you'd like more advice, feel free to PM me anytime! Glad to help!

I use this over here: http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-Wireless-Network-Adapter-DWA-182/dp/B0099XFRIY

You connect it to a cradle that it comes with, put it as high as possible (mine is on a dresser next to my desk), and then connect it to one of your USB ports.

I went from unstable all over the place to very steady, and I'm located pretty far from my router.
