It was translated from Japanese though I don't believe the names were changed at all. At least I'm not finding anything about alternate versions of the names.

I think it was a case of using eastern naming practices with english words. It would have looked fine to someone in Japan but once presented to a western audience turned silly.

There are a lot of mystery/horror novels in syosetu.com, it's just nobody translates them, just like there are a lots of BL novels that aren't translated

If you have seen Death Note then I would highly recommend Death Note: Another Note by NisiOisiN. It follows a case earlier in L's career. Its only one volume and I love it but you can only read it after you have watched Death Note since it uses some of the same characters.

Since you already have Spice and Wolf I can't really recommend any other officially translated ones. You can try this blog for a list of the officially translated light novels.

You could read the manga, which covers stuff the anime cut out for time reasons, or a prequel novel featuring Naomi and L
