For 300 bucks personally I would go with decent Powered speakers. Make sure you pick up a phono preamp as well if you go this route as opposed to using an amp+passive speakers (which is much more expensive, unless you go used). That's the setup I did, minimalist, clean, decent value, but still relatively cheap. Here's my setup for example...

https://www.amazon.com/rolls-VP29-Phono-Preamp/dp/B0002BG2R2 - Rolls VP29 Phono Preamp

https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1700BT-Bluetooth-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016PATXSI - Edifier R1700BT Powered Speakers with Bluetooth - For the value these sound really awesome. Only downside is there are not great with lots of bass, they flubber. In retrospect I might have gotten something different, but most stuff I listen to isn't bass heavy so I'm not torn over it. I also wanted bluetooth in this room because it's a guest room.

https://www.amazon.com/Pro-Ject-Elemental-Gray-Turntable-Grey/dp/B01CZW826Y?th=1 - Pro-Ject Elemental Turntable - Great value turntable on the low-end if you buy new.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000513O4/ - Tripp Lite Isobar surge protector - Because I'm paranoid about this stuff and these are high end surge protectors that we use at work. They are bulletproof.

So anyways... for 300 bucks you can pick up the same phono preamp and these...

I hear the R2000's don't have the same bass issue that the r1700 does, but they cost a lot more. Edifier is kind of one of the best in value right now, it's "Chi-Fi" good. The hardcore audiophile kiddos are often brand-whores, so take their allegiance with a grain of salt and try to remain objective, read reviews, technical analysis, etc..

The A2's always get good reviews in this price range, I have no personal experience, but there are recent reviews that show problems with quality control, maybe the company is getting worse?

A lot of people swear by the Klipsch powered monitors once you get into this price range, but I don't have any personal experience, maybe someone else can chime in, just showing it here because you might want to consider it, read about them more.

These are just barely in the price range, definitely consider them, my friend has a Polk setup and he loves it. These seem to get good reviews from hip hop heads too, so the bass response must be good.

It really depend on your musical taste, the room, what kind of setup you are wanting to go with overall and for what purpose though. If you want to be able to handle everything, up the budget, or buy used honestly. If you stay on a small budget and buy new, you are going to have to have compromises. I was wiling to have that compromise, but others may not.

FWIW these are the speakers I bought: Edifier R2000DB Powered Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers

Pros: compact, all-in-one design, decent power (120W RMS), all the features I wanted save subwoofer (they're kinda built in to each speaker), nothing permanently wired together (I hate those).

Cons: Not that big of a bass driver, in fact the two in these are smaller than the single bass driver in my VS4221's. But, the way higher power rating should make up for that. Way over my stated budget ($200), lol.

Also these are near-field monitors. Not completely ideal, but I'm not all that concerned about far-field performance. These'll do fine for background music during parties, while cooking, etc.

These speakers:

and This turntable is an amazing, affordable setup.:

If you are willing to Shell out an extra $100, you might want to go ahead and go for the S1000DB speakers instead: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CDIS6M0/ref=sspa_mw_detail_0?psc=1. Z Not only are they a bit more powerful and bassier, but they also have lossless Bluetooth 4.0 sound. For the turntable, you should always use the analog cables however. Using digital formats lose something.

Edifier has pretty good powered 2.0 speakers that have better values compared to Audioengine. I am speaking as an Audioengine customer.

u/alish2001 · 1 pointr/audiophile

I'm looking to buy a nice pair of speakers, preferably audio monitors and I'm looking for a nice sound throughout.
These are some I found and I was wondering on people's opinion:
Been eyeing this for a while
A better version of the same(?)
Doesn't look too bad?
I think my friend had these

Sorry for the weird titles lol but I really want to buy some nice monitors for my somewhat low budget XD

Atmos only can be carried through a direct HDMI signal, not ARC or optical (the upcoming HDMI 2.1 does allow it via ARC).

However, it's pretty dumb to spend that much on a sound bar. With those baby speakers, no way will it simulate height channels.

Get a different soundbar for a max $300 or buy powered speakers and use them for a 2.0 (some have a sub out if you want to buy a sub; keep in mind some can simply accept optical/aux while others need a DAC to convert optical to XLR).

These Edifiers would be good. They can have a subwoofer integrated unless you have a receiver, but these get decently low on their own (55Hz), whereas the subwoofer in a soundbar package will get to usually 40Hz at most. Just buy a Logitech Harmony remote and set it up, I have the 650 (currently like $35 USD) and it works great. If you want, you could speingnfor the more expensive Elite model which comes with the Hub, which will be great for future proofing (and for controlling some aspects of video game consoles) and it has integration with Amazon's Alexa and Google Home.

what are your thoughts on these

u/polypeptide147 · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

If you're going with Edifier (which I recommend), go with just a 2.0 setup. You can always add a sub later if you feel you need it, and this will sound much better than the 2.1 system.

u/boxjon · 1 pointr/BudgetAudiophile

Edit: Answer.

That would be fine for your needs. Alternative would be something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R2000DB-Bluetooth-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B01CDU3IAI/ref=sr_1_12?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1510323090&sr=1-12&keywords=powered+speakers

They prob get much louder and have a lot better imaging for gaming and movies. Also have more input options. Bluetooth (for connection to your PC for gaming) and optical for movies and tv. I have recommended these before and they have been well received.

Rambling:

I have tried both. My living room space is like 13x14 and I used to have a full 5.1 system which was pieced together. I really enjoyed playing games on it. Not all movies and TV shows really take advantage of surround sound. (blu rays are great for it though) Occasionally you'll get music or loud explosions or people talking around you. I have since down-scaled to a stereo setup with amps in bridged mono. While I do miss the occasional rear sounds, a good set of bookshelf speakers can provide amazing sound separation and imaging. I would say depends on what you are doing with your kit. More music, go stereo, more movies and games go 5.1 or even 7.1. The good thing about going with a surround sound setup is you can experiment with stereo still.
