it does make a difference, however buddy lee ropes are both very expensive, and the most benefit is derived when you're trying to go very fast 4+ revolutions per second. If you're interested in jumping rope, start with an everlast rope like this which is a very solid rope and will get you through intermediate mump rope stuff.

When you start make sure the rope fits correctly, that can be a huge factor as well - by stepping on it with one foot and pulling it taught it should come up to shoulder height or very slightly lower. Any longer or shorter and you'll have trouble getting a rhythm.

From there work on very manageable goals - start with get 10 in a row and stop get 10 more and stop - the key is keeping your form smooth and not letting it break down. You can slowly extend the number you do to 15 20 etc and next thing you know you'll just be chilling as you go.

Look for routines online to mix it up and just keep at it. Most people think they can just pick a rope up and go to town - especially if you're uncoordinated it can take weeks but you'll get there - just 5 minutes a day 4 times a week and in a couple weeks you'll be doing just fine.

All in the wrist as vonralls says, your arms aren't doing much though for 20 minutes I'd imagine they'd get pretty tired anyway.

As for fit of the rope, stand on the middle of the rope, the handles should be at your armpits. I bought a speed rope and it was near perfect length (I'm 5'10" could probably work for someone anywhere from 5'8"-6'2") but typically you can cut the rope to length if needed.
