I bought a refurbished Garmin Forerunner 235 on Amazon, looks like it's $230 right now but maybe Black Friday could get it under $200? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MATKIWO/ref=twister_B07DPGR44N?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I used it for a Trifecta + two other OCRs and while I had to clean it pretty well after mud made the buttons hard to press, it's still working very well for me.

I bought a certified referb Forerunner 235 for $210 last week from Amazon, if that interests you!

You didn't mention the Garmin Forerunner 235, but it's at a cheaper pricepoint and came with everything I wanted besides the music, which admittedly if that's a big deal for you it could be worth the extra cost. For me I often run with a buddy or have my phone so I can call someone as a "just in case" option

Anyway you can get good refurb deals on the 235 at amazon (~$170). I figured if I got good mileage (heh) out of this one I'd be happy to upgrade later, and I liked the look a lot more than just the 35. At the cheaper pricepoint I'm also happy to buy more accessories, like say the HR monitor

I'm 6'3 and 215 lbs and I think the Fenix 3 is a bit too big for me, so I'd probably go for a smaller watch if I were you. Do you have any store nearby where you can look at the watches? Because a GPS watch is going to be really big compared to a regular fitness band.

If you don't need the triathlon features of the Fenix 3 then I'd definitely go with something like this instead, it's a bit cheaper and weighs less than half as much as the Fenix 3 and you can probably find an even better deal if you look around at other sites. The battery life won't be quite as long but that's just the tradeoff you have to do with getting a smaller watch, and it still lasts for more than a week without charging if you don't do GPS tracking activities often.

What PDF were you looking at? (I'm on my phone at the moment and I'm not seeing it.)

I have a Fenix 5. Expensive, but mainly got it for appearance, not extra features.

Basic features are used the most... HR monitoring during the day, GPS data during runs... A chest strap during all my runs. I think most watches will give you that.

I do like the VO2 Max calcs (it's nice to get an indication of progress even if it fluctuates). Those exist on most watches. Lactate threshold data is interesting but I don't know how trustworthy it is. You have to start spending some money to get lactate threshold data. The recovery adviser and all that stuff is also interesting. It's a little nice to have a watch that gives you ideas on how you are doing. Is it gospel, no, absolutely not (hot weather runs will make you seem out of shape). It's all interesting.

Honestly, you have some budget, I'd get whatever watch fits that budget best and not worry about the features. There's always more features out there but honestly the basic ones are really the most useful.

For a bargain, I'd look at the refurbished Garmin Forerunner 235 for $200 or so on Amazon.

Especially if you get it refurbished.
