I wear underarmour leggings if it's going to get really cold. I'd also invest in some good, thicker jeans. You don't need to look fabulous, some durable Levi's would be great. Thermal underwear is also a godsend.
I'd also try thigh high socks. I always wear at least knee high, but in winter I have some fabulously soft thigh high ones I wear, kind of like these.
I'd also have a moisturizing body wash, and then use some lotion after showering and after riding to keep your skin from drying out. To help the rawness now, use corona. We probably use it more in our house than we do for our horses. My dad used to get rubbed bad if we rode more than 20 miles a day, and this would heal his skin overnight.
A little late to the party but I'll throw my opinion in. Grew up on the farm and through years of using this with the dairy cows to heal chapped skin, we figured why not try it. It works awesome. Sounds weird, but trust me, the stuff works wonders on chapped, cracked or dry skin. Try it out.
