Here is one that includes an RX 580 8GB for $399. I have a feeling a 399 dollar computer is gonna perform worse than a MacBook Pro with a 399 RX 580 eGPU.
> I can indeed look inte egpus like the one apple suggests, the blackmagic one.
Nah. Unless you’re running software or doing work that requires a quiet environment (it’s very very quiet), you’re better off getting something else. Like the Razer Core X and a Sapphire RX580 or something, for future upgradability.
Or if you need something more portable, maybe the Gaming Box
How much is cheap with regards to the card? You can get a brand new "mining" RX470 8GB that has a single DVI output for 130$ (assuming you are in the US). While the RX580 is about 20% more powerful, being able to connect the eGPU directly to the monitor provides a boost, so you should end up with better performance overall. If this is about the same price you'd pay for the RX580, it might be a better option.
A brand new, normal, RX580 is 190-200$ on Newegg right now as well.
The AORUS Gaming Box RX580 is 389.99$ after rebate on Amazon, including both card and enclosure.
Finally, if you do get the cheap mining card, you'll need an enclosure: The Power ColorGaming Station is 179.99$ as open box on Newegg. A brand new one is 199.99$. This is the cheapest fully-featured (87W charging, and a good PSU to support nearly any card, and even Ethernet and USB expansion) eGPU enclosure currently available.
2070 but there is a cheaper RX580

I have both and use the 580 when I'm travelling and have the 2070 in a triple 27" displays
If the upgrade is over 450 bucks get the base model and get a cheap eGPU with a Radeon RX 580 (desktop graphic card) that’ll be way better.
420 bucks:

If you want a future proof setup you’d rather invest in a better eGPU case like the Razer Core X for 300 bucks, because that can power your Mac (up to 100W output) and very high end graphic cards up to 350W, though. Then if some day the cheap Radeon isn’t good enough just replace it with a high end desktop graphic card.
That's outstanding!!! I'm so glad to hear that it was plug and play for you.
if you're curious about picking up the sonnet breakaway puck, give the gigabyte RX 580 gaming box a look first. In a package about twice the Puck's size, the RX 580 gaming box houses a more powerful AMD GPU with twice the VRAM. It also sells for $100 less than the Puck. Just like the puck, it comes as a prebuilt package that just needs to be plugged in. I use this enclosure with a NVidia card and I love it.

Let me explain from a cost perspective: it's not cost effective.
If you went with an egpu for your MacBook you'd need to grab something like a Radeon RX 580 with enclosure, at a minimum. It's about $400 on Amazon right now. This doesn't include the VR headset.
The problem you'd have is that VR needs, at a minimum, quad core CPUs to run smoothly. The Macbook would a very low power dual core CPU that doesn't provide enough power for VR tracking and gameplay. (You'll see jitters and lower framerates)
So basically going with the egpu would end up costing you about $50 more than the the Optiplex I mentioned and would perform slower, because it would be CPU limited.
The egpu method would only really work if you had a recent Retina iMac or a 15" MacBook Pro.
> no need for any of that.
??
i think there's a fundamental disconnect from what i'm talking about.
scenario we're talking about: someone has a 3 year old mbp and wants better gpu acceleration when they're at workstation. they still need a laptop.
here's a 580 at the $400: https://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-Gaming-Graphic-Card-GV-RX580IXEB-8GD/dp/B07CCK527Y
so show me where it's better to build a full mitx system for the same price?
Thanks for all the answers! Yeah eGPUs don't seem anywhere cheap, most of them go for $300 for the enclosures only which is a rip. I wonder if an RX580 should be good enough to run pubg heh. https://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-Gaming-Graphic-Card-GV-RX580IXEB-8GD/dp/B07CCK527Y

It's a 15" 2017 touchbar model with four cores:
\>Model Name: MacBook Pro
\>Model Identifier: MacBookPro14,3
\>Processor Name: Intel Core i7
\>Processor Speed: 2.9 GHz
\>Number of Processors: 1
\>Total Number of Cores: 4
Let me see...:
The machine is amazing, super light and having the thunderbolt makes it super easy to dock in an out from eGPU.
So all in, we are looking at around 1800 ish Euros.
Only things I'd change right now:
Aorus Gaming Box eGPU RX 580
I believe AMD GPUs have been natively supported by MacOS for sometime now. This is a powerful and portable solution for you. I have been looking to getting one of these too. Only problem is portability, however there are reports of people being able to fit a RX Vega 56 nano in there if more power is needed later on.
What do you think of this LG Gram in combination with this external RX 580?

for some reason all the rx 580s and 1070s are used, but they are in 350-400 buck price range

I'd stick away from the 1080s they are all way too overpriced with used ones at $800 when the brand new ones were $650. They were everywhere about 2 months ago but I guess they stopped stocking pascal because of turing.

How do you think something like this would fare?
First your laptop needs a thunderbolt port to use one. They also tend to be pretty pricey, here's an example https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CCK527Y/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_rjYACbX0P3C9J
Great points, thanks! I found one on amazon Canada for $650 but that’s the same cost to me as a $400 Razer core and a $200 RX 570 so it’s a tough choice. Think at the Canadian price point it might not be worth it vs the competition lol
Edit: looks like it’s about $450USD

If your laptop has thunderbolt 3 this would do nicely
