I definitely agree with you about the fabric. I found this photo of your inspiration dress, and it makes the fabric look much lighter than the fabric the seamstress used. It almost looks like a silk organza.

I think the stiffness and heaviness of the skirt fabric is what is making it look like it's missing the mark a little. Also, maybe the pleats could be made deeper for more fullness?
