Well, with no budget presented, I will give my opinion about what to spend, since there is already a lot about what to wear and how not to wear common things.
Set a budget for some new wardrobe items, say $300. Now triple or quadruple that for the next year and you will have an idea of how much it will cost to get that $300 worth of new items... Sounds crazy, but between colors that look great on a rack, horrible on you, fit, fabric textures and the other myriad of things you will discover, choose, discard and come back to, it is accurate in my experience.

One thing, get a blazer and incorporate it into your look. For the money this Haggar travel blazer is a good choice. One color, very wrinkle resistant and a multitude of sizes, goes with jeans or chinos... Uniqlo, Bannana republic and many other places have great blazers too, but for the money, this Haggar one has done me great service and is available in a slim fit too. I live in the Desert SW, and this is light enough for even summer wear.
