As a former security guard, I can say that these can get very uncomfortable. Granted I was wearing mine for up to 14 hours at a time and had a lot of shit on it (2x handcuffs, flashlight, medical gloves, keys, UHF radio, etc).

I've never though about wearing one to hold photo/video equipment. However, I'll give a few tips for those who do decide to try them out:

  • Get an inner belt like this. The purpose of this is that because duty belts are too big to fit in the belt loops of pants. The inner belt acts as the actual belt for your pants, and the duty belt goes over top. How do they stay together, you may ask? This brings me to my next tip.

  • Get "belt keepers", which look like these. These go around both the inner belt and the outer duty belt and literally "keep" the outer duty belt in place. INCEPTION TIP (tip inside of a tip): if you get a woven nylon outer belt, get woven nylon keepers. If you get a woven leather outer belt, get woven leather keepers. If you get a solid leather outer belt, get solid leather or molded keepers.

  • Make sure your belts are fitting properly. While they can be adjusted to a certain degree, nothing sucks more than having a duty belt that is a little too small. Believe me.

  • Make sure the belt buckle has a center button like the one pictured here. While this may not be as important for using these belts for more light duty activities such as photography or videography, it's very good to have. Its purpose is to prevent any accidental "unbucklings".
