I am in a similar position as you and I plan to get the Shure 440 at $100. Neutral sound, removable cable (so you can get a shorter one), foldable with pouch included. I have read many people actually prefer them to the $200 Shure 840. Another alternative that brings up tons of debate between these two is the KRK 8400 for $110, and the KRK 6400 for $91. But like I said, after doing quite a bit of research I have decided I feel most comfortable with the 440 and their pricetag. The shure 840 pads are an easy upgrade to the 440 as well.

Outside these the xpt100 seems like a great choice as well. Although they are quite big for public use.

The best gaming headset is a headphone of your choice plus a ModMic.

For gaming, you probably want bass and soundstage. Soundstage is better with open headphones. If you can live with lots of sound leakage, This would be a good option: ATH-AD700.

If you can't have lots of leakage, these are pretty good for the price and have great soundstage for a closed 'phone: KRK KNS6400

From what I can tell they're pretty nice headphones. I own the K77s which are lower-end versions of the K99s, and I've had them for over two years. Insanely comfortable for the price, and had pretty good sound quality. Lots of leakage though. I haven't personally heard any headphones in the same price point other than the KRK KNS-6400s which I both own and love.

Jump a bit higher and you'll have lots of options (shoot for $200 at least, I think it's worth it). For flat-response/recording @ <$100 these are the only pair I've used: http://www.amazon.com/KRK-KNS6400-Studio-Headphones/dp/B004ARSMXQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416759814&sr=8-1&keywords=krk+kns+6400 . Does the job and is accurate/flat, but might bug a bit due to pinch/pressure on the ears.

u/drebin8 · 2 pointsr/Music

Just got a new pair of headphones (KRK KNS-6400) so I was looking for something to test it out with. Definitely sounds good.

u/a1blank · 2 pointsr/FindItOnAmazon

I don't know if you're looking for earbuds, iems, or headphones, but I got these KRK 6400's a year or two ago and I've been very happy.

This thread has good recommendations for best band for your buck.

u/yuikl · 2 pointsr/headphones

Others have mentioned the m50x isn't really geared toward production so your mixes might suffer. Just a sidenote on flat response: I had some cheaper headphones made for recording (KRK 6400) and the difference is pretty stark between those and headphones made more for just enjoying music. Flat-response (aka reference monitoring) sound pretty shallow to people used to regular headphones. Here's the kicker: people who aren't used to reference recording will overcompensate when mixing, making the mix worse than if they used regular headphones! Just something to think about. I've heard great things about the M50x and I'm sure they'll work fine in general, but don't send any mixes to anyone until you've played them back on a few different headphones/speakers. I was horrified when one of my beautiful-sounding songs I mixed was played in a car stereo and sounded horrible.

Superlux HD 681 gets good press from the headphone audio community for budget/entry level full sized (semi)open headphones

Monoprice 8323 if you prefer full sized closed headphones

If you're willing to spend a bit more:

Audio Technica ATH-AD700 is one of the most popular entry level/introductory open audiophile headphones

If you prefer closed at this price range there's the KRK KNS6400

*Open denotes no sound isolation while closed provides isolation.

First of all, the headphone buying FAQ and excel doc is wonderful. It encourages research before blindly posting, and I think that's great. I want to thank this subreddit for the straight-forward help. Okay, on to my 'requirements' now.

  • Location: France

  • Budget: "Entry Level" 75-150€

  • Source: Laptop & mp3 player (Zune)

  • Isolation: Closed, over-ear headphones.

I don't intend to travel with these headphones, but I'd like to be able to wear them in a library without bothering others, and shut out the noise of a busy cafe, if possible.

  • Preferred Type of Headphone: Full-sized

  • Preferred tonal balance: I'm guessing Neutral.

My "Preferred Music" might suggest otherwise, I'm not sure. I understand the mechanics behind what dark/warm, V-shaped, and Neutral sound means, but I don't know the differences in sound.

In my recent reading, I read that having it sound like the music is playing inside my head could be undesirable, but I've always enjoyed that effect (albeit with low-cost IEMs).

That said, I don't even know what an "open soundstage" would sound like. If y'all think I should try something new... well, I am here for advice and I intend to hear ya out.

  • Past headphones: I'm a frequent buyer of 10-15€ IEM headphones.

I've bought Phillips, Sony, Skullcandy, JVC and probably others. The last couple were Sony, I think. I like these because of they're easy to travel with and they're efficient in shutting out noise and not bothering others.

Also, they're cheap to replace when I inevitably tear the cables. Headphones with a removable cable would be best... I'm a clumsy bastard.

  • Preferred Music: Pretty much everything. I don't listen to much Metal or Pop music. I have a lot of tinny old Blues recordings, so detail clarity is important.

  • Options: From the excel doc, FAQ, and the Head-Fi guide, I found these: NVX XPT100, KRK KNS6400, and Sennheiser HD280. If I understood correctly, these choices should help me to avoid an amp, for now.

  • Other Info: I have high-frequency hearing loss in my left ear.

Let me know if I'm heading in the right direction, or if I done messed up somehow. Again, thanks to the people who contribute to this subreddit. It's been an enlightening hour or so.

I think the headphone sub has an advice sticky and they frown on advice posts. Just a heads up.

So you realize the 558's are open headphones. So you are going to leak noise. Particularly on a bus. You'll turn it up to drown out ambient noise and it'll bleed out like crazy.

Would you object to on ears? Momentum's Seem to be right up your ally if so. Also at a very good price right now because of the holidays.

The other set I'd shoot for is maybe the KRK-6400. They have a really good sound stage for a closed headphone, particularly any under $300 bucks or so.

Those two should have decent isolation, be comfortable, and have near the sound signature you are looking for. I added my own requirement for you, and that's durability. Pleanty of cans in your $ would work, but some of the budget kings aren't so durable. You said your going to be on a bus, to track meets. Lots of moving around with them, plus even if you take care of your stuff, who knows what could happen on the bus.

For the final thought, you can't really make a bad choice with the 50's. There is a reason they are so ungodly popular. They are an all around decent headphone.

u/Om2002 · 1 pointr/headphones

All info below. Thanks in advance!

Budget: ~ $100. This is pretty flexible though. I'd be willing to spend around $150 if I though it was worth it.

Source: Laptop, iPad, iPhone

Requirements for isolation: I'd like a fair amount of isolation. I'm starting school in the fall so i'll be doing a lot of studying. I'm sure I'll be spending lots of time in a library where it isn't too loud to begin with, but I do like studying in cafes and other public areas as well.

Preferred Type of headphone: Full-sized.

Preferred tonal balance: I'm thinking i'd like something pretty balanced since I listen to a wide array of music genres.

Past headphones: I've never owned a "nice" pair of headphones. I've always had the $20 kind of headphones you get from walmart, best buy, etc.

Preferred music: Everything from electronic/house to old-school rap to country.

After doing some of my own research (thank you, Headphone Buying Guide!!) I've come across some headphones that I think i'd like (below). Any opinions on these would be great. I'd also love some other options if you guys think I might be missing out on something!

Cheaper end of the price range:

NVX Audio XPT100 (http://www.amazon.com/NVX-Over-Ear-Headphones-ComfortMax-Cushions/dp/B0093PVTPS)

KRK KNS6400 (http://www.amazon.com/KRK-KNS6400-Studio-Headphones/dp/B004ARSMXQ)

Higher end of price range:

Audio-Technica ATH-M50xWH (http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50x-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B00HVLUR86)

KRK KNS8400 (http://www.amazon.com/KRK-KNS8400-Studio-Headphones/dp/B004ARUO2S)

Audio-Technica ATH-M50 (http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M50-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B000ULAP4U)

Lastly, I'm pretty big on comfort. I plan on wearing these headphone for hours on end.

Thanks!

I bought a few headsets and after the last one broke I said hell with them. I don't think I ever got more than one to two years out of them. As other people are posting, a quality set of headphones with a mic is the way to go. Below is what I'm using. I'm very happy with the setup.

Zalman Zm-Mic1

KRK KNS6400

u/DoctorGeoff · 1 pointr/headphones

Budget: <$100

Source: PC / Phone

Isolation Requirements: Some. I'd like to play music at low-medium volumes without others hearing it. I will be using these outside and in public.

Preferred Type of Headphone: N/A

Tonal Balance: Neutral or V shaped

Past Headphones: Shit

Preferred Music: Electronic, Techno, Trance, Indie, Folk, Punk, Rock, Alternative, Pop, Reggae. Also stuff like Neutral Milk Hotel with interesting vocal melodies, horns n shit. But I also love bass.

So I'm looking to buy a new pair of headphones, and I've never owned a decent pair in the past. I've narrowed my search down to two particular pairs of headphones that I'm interested in. I'd like for you guys to help me decide which pair would be better for me or if there is a better choice for <$100

Any closed headphones should work as a good sound dampener, for around $100 I'd recommend these;

Seinnheiser HD449

ATH M50x

KRK KNS 6400

u/Modthryth · 1 pointr/classicalmusic

https://www.amazon.com/KRK-KNS6400-Studio-Headphones/dp/B004ARSMXQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1523894435&sr=8-1&keywords=krk+kns6400

KRK KNS 6400s have been awesome for me for like 5 years now. Easily driven, great soundstaging, and a little wimpy on the bass (despite extending very low), which is GOOD for classical music because the other headphones I tried out, with their powerful bass, just sounded artificial to me. They're perfectly durable too.

Budget - ~$70-120 but willing to go up if really necessary

Source - For home use on my PC, for gaming and all genres of music.

Requirements for Isolation - I share a room and do not live alone. So I suppose the more isolation the better. If less isolation helps with quality while not disturbing isolation too much though, I'd entertain the thought.

Preferred Type of Headphone - I honestly don't care as long as the quality for what I want is good.

Preferred tonal balance - I honestly can't say. Whatever's balanced?

Past headphones - Sennheiser 201s and 202s, both did the job for me just fine.

Preferred Music - I honestly listen to a lot of different genres, and play a lot of games on my PC.

I was looking for good quality suggestions for headphones that shouldn't bother the people that live with me, and found these:

Creative Aurvana Live! Headphones

Sony MDRV6 Studio Monitor Headphones

KRK KNS6400 Studio Headphones

Any opinions? I'm also open to other suggestion of course, I'd appreciate any help given. Not having to buy an AMP would also be cool, but I'm willing to hear suggestions for buying.

Just some KRK-6400s and a portable headphone amp.

I get hype as fuck in these.

u/KnockturnalEmissons · 0 pointsr/headphones

there is a lot of research one must take on finding the best headphones. I suggest the KRK-6400 headphones. These are balanced headphones for $85 monies. If u want more bass you can tell, more treble you can tell, theses are amazing starter cans. I will say this, PM ur acount info and if the KRK-6400 disappoint u, then let me know, Ill buy em for 85 monies

u/Discchord · -1 pointsr/WeAreTheMusicMakers

These guys are giving you out-dated advice, the new hotness is KRK. The most comfy headphones ever, with none of the bullshit bass boosting a lot of the cans in this price range are plagued with.

http://www.amazon.com/KRK-KNS6400-Studio-Headphones/dp/B004ARSMXQ $80, or pop for their big brothers at $120.

Try these at guitar center, and then try any of the others. None of them will match it in comfort. I wince when I see people recommend Sony, those crushed my fucking skull.
