Real life sniping eh? I'm not from Canada but I'm close...yay Michigan! Just from looking at your laws over there online, it looks like you can obtain a decent long range rifle in Canada. Granted when you say "sniper rifle" you are probably thinking of [this.] (http://www.google.com/imgres?sa=X&hl=en&rlz=1C1ASRM_enUS528US528&biw=1745&bih=829&tbs=isz:l&tbm=isch&tbnid=9cgnsEtdQi7aCM:&imgrefurl=http://lutz-moeller-jagd.de/12,7-mm/50BMG.htm&docid=gpXj35TctGdA8M&imgurl=http://lutz-moeller-jagd.de/12,7-mm/Reynolds/Reynolds-50-BMG-schraeg.jpg&w=1198&h=720&ei=1rOLUZLnMtO5qQHkuYCQAg&zoom=1&ved=1t:3588,r:19,s:0,i:218&iact=rc&dur=1551&page=1&tbnh=157&tbnw=290&start=0&ndsp=20&tx=170&ty=56)

[Go here.] (http://www.howtogetagun.ca/) This will give you information on how to purchase a rifle. It looks like you have to be over 18 (check, you are!). You have to pass the CFSC (Canadian Firearms Safety Courses) Then you just fill out and mail in the app form.
This will get you your license to be able to purchase a rifle.

In reality, a good number of snipers actually use a different caliber, the .308

Unless I made a vast amount of money I would never use a rifle in the caliber of .50, it is just too expensive. We are talking 2 USD a round...lets say you go to a range and shoot 60 rounds...well that's $120 for around 1 hour of shooting. NOPE

I find I enjoy not the "HEY I HAVE COOL RIFLE LOOK AT ME" but more the precision and accuracy mentality of the sport. I can shoot my .22 rifle all day cheaply and feel awesome because I hit my mark and get good shot groups at long distances.
Now we're talking! A box of 500 rounds in the US is around 20 USD...which would be 25 rounds/1 dollar!

That all being said, if you are SERIOUS and looking for a decent rifle with the necessary accessories for shooting at long distances (it's going to cost you) I would start with a .308

Ruger .308

[Glass aka your scope (Leupold VX-3)] (http://www.amazon.com/Leupold-VX-3L-6-5-20x56mm-Focus-Duplex/dp/B001PR6Z2E/ref=sr_1_5?s=sporting-goods&srs=2529780011&ie=UTF8&qid=1368109186&sr=1-5&keywords=leupold+scope)

Spotting scope - When you are shooting from long distances you need to be able to see your target and see exactly where you hit so you can adjust on your next shot. Usually you have a spotter who is looking through this while you are firing telling you if you are low/high/right/left.

[Ballistics Computer...windage,elevation, bullet drop etc.] (http://www.shooterapp.net/) - You can get this app on either iOS or Android. This would also be used by your spotter.

Here the type of rifle that I use. It is a old Russian sniper rifle the Mosin Nagant. It is cheap but that doesn't mean it isn't a quality rifle. The Russian's produced millions of them and that has flooded the market. You can pick them up for around 150-200 USD! You may think eh looks kinda shitty when you get it. But with the right modifications (which you should be able to get in Canada) it can turn into a modern high powered rifle.

Come over to /r/guns and ask away! It is a very active community and will help you with any questions you have to get started.

I find shooting to give you peace of mind and a hobby that is fun no matter where or what you are shooting. Get. Into. It.

If you're close to the Detroit area, maybe my brother and I can go to a range with you and help you get a feel for things.

Cheers from your American neighbors!
