1. Depends on your experience. If you're new to teching, getting something good off the bat is my recommendation. If you want a nice middle ground, get an ICS. Good internals out of the box, and split gearbox makes it easy to work on.
   
   
2. Flat-hop or r-hop for range and consistency. R-hop is better, but more difficult/time consuming, so might be worth getting it professionally done.
   
   
3. A good mask or goggles that don't fog are a must. A Dye I4 or Dye I5 are best if you want a mask, and the Pyramex I-force are very nice for goggles. For a lower face mask, if you're using goggles, the One Tigris mask is very nice.
   
   Mid cap vs hi cap is really just preference. Mid caps are more realistic, don't make any noise, and don't need to be wound. Hi caps are easier to load and hold a lot more ammo.
   
   UTG makes some good optics. I have their Magnifier and short dot, and their red dot is pretty popular as well. If you want cheap, the Field Sport red dot is supposed to be pretty solid. Bushnell and Primary Arms are on the higher end of micro red dots, at least for airsoft. I have the Primary Arms and it's real nice.

A 4-16x50 scope translates thusly:

"4-16": Magnification range. Magnification is adjustable from x4 power to x16 power.

"50": The diameter of the forward most lens.

Lens Size As you magnify, less light is being transmitted through your lens, so while your picture might seem bright and normal on x4 magnification, your x16 magnification might look kind of gray scale and dark. Best way of fixing this: Make the forward most lens bigger to gather more light. Pros: You can see in low light and better at long magnifications. Cons: Adds a lot of weight.

Tube Size There are usually two sizes you'll see—1" (small and light), and 30mm (bigger and heavier). While the 30mm tube is heavier, it does transmit more light, and will also allow more space for windage and elevation adjustments. Pros for 30mm: Extreme long range adjustments, better light transmission at night and at high magnification. Cons for 30mm: Adds a lot of weight, especially if you're never shooting beyond x12 magnification, or at night, or at 400+ yds.

Gas Purging Most scopes are nitrogen filled. Nitrogen differs in weight to Oxygen, so the seals on the scope are more secure, which means less moisture in the scope, which means less fogging. A step up is to use Argon or other treatments that do even better. While a Vortex Crossfire and a Vortex Diamondback might be similar in price, the Diamondback is argon purged, and has better light transmission and seals.

Glass Coatings Think of glasses lenses. If you don't get anti reflective coatings, light bounces off the lenses, which means less light gets through—which is a big deal at x16 magnification. The better the coatings, the more light gets through. Naturally, the better the coatings, the more expensive the scope.

Glass Quality Diamonds have a clarity scale. The clearer the crystal, the more light gets reflected in the facets. Similarly, not all glass is made on the same level. High end scopes will use glass that is clear as they can manage. Getting the impurities out of the glass means more processes, which means more money.

What I personally would want in an AR scope in your application range:

• 4-12x44. Max range on an AR is close to 500yds. If I were doing 1000yds with a .300 Win Mag, I'd go with a 6-18x55 or something similar.
  
  
• 1" tube. If my magnification is only to x12, and I have at least 40mm forward lens, I should get enough light transmission as it is. Plus, it will be light. The AR15 was made to be light. Keep it that way.

So for reference, I have a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 and it's been a fine scope. I've also used someone else's Nikon P-223 scope and it was good too, so you probably wouldn't go far wrong with either of the ones you linked. But, adjustable parallax is something I probably wouldn't get a scope without anymore, especially for .22 where the range can vary from across the room distance to 100+ yards. The key words to look for in the scope specs are "adjustable parallax", "adjustable objective" (AO, when the parallax adjustment is done by twisting a ring around the objective lens at the front), or "side-focus" (when the parallax adjustment is on a turret on the side of the scope).

If you want to stick with Nikon, it looks like they're making an inexpensive adjustable parallax scope now. The tech specs on that site say it adjusts down to 50 yards, but the mark on the adjustment ring in the picture says 10, and Amazon also says 10 yards minimum, which is good for .22.

On the lower end of the budget, I also have a number of inexpensive Leapers/UTG/Centerpoint scopes (3-9x40, 3-9x35, 1.5-4x32, and a couple others) and have actually been really impressed with them for the money. Their main market seems to be air rifles, which many people take less seriously, but air rifle scopes have to be very rugged, and typically can adjust their parallax to much closer than scopes meant for rifles. And the prices are pretty damn good for the features. This UTG 3-9x32 has almost 2000 reviews and still 4.5 stars on Amazon, is very compact, comes with a sunshade, caps, and QD scope rings (I just got a set of UTG QD rings for another scope and they seem OK so far, .22 isn't very demanding), adjusts down to 3 yards, and is under $80. Amazing what they're doing in China these days. There are a number of similar models from other brands with various features and zoom ranges, probably all made in the same factory in China. I'm not sure if any of them are notably better quality than any others, I mostly stick with UTG for my cheap scopes because I have experience with them now.

One I saw just now is this Bushnell 2-7x32, and looks like it might be a good alternative.

On the higher end of the budget scale, Vortex has a 4-12x50 and a 4-12x40 that are adjustable. That's also more magnification though.

As before, the Scorpion EVO3A1's a truly epic gun; you should definitely read the website ASG put together for it which explains what's so special about it. I put together a quick list for a friend who was thinking about getting one a while back; here's what was on it:

I like it so far. It's a little heavier than I was expecting, adding noticeably to the weight of the rifle. And it would be helpful if I could mount it further back, closer to my eye. I bought a 1-piece mount, so I can't slide it further back (the mount really only fits in 1 position on the scope).

The non-Compact version probably extends closer to your eye, so might be easier for mounting comfortably.

I am wondering if that 3-9x32 BugBuster might be a better fit for my needs. It's lighter, at least, and I don't think I need the 12x magnification. I was more interested in the larger objective, figuring that would let in more light, and I thought it provides benefits for eye relief as well.

Hmm. I don't know that people really scope match rifles so I wouldn't recommend it personally. I guess it depends what you're planning to do with them but I'd scope the hw55 if they were mine. Even with in .177 you should be able to easily reach out to ~50 yards without heavy winds. For me it's still a toss up between the 3-9 and the 4-12, I have both and love them both. I really like my 4-12 though - even at close distances of 10-15 yards - because I like being able to zoom in and pick out my target. The 3-9 is more than enough for casual plinking though.

People swear by Hawke and this is a good entry level one. They have some really great scopes in the 200 - 300 range too.

I have owned and used the Trijicon LED ACOG and I have also used (but not owned) the tritium ACOG during my time in the USMC.

I have never owned a VCOG but I hear they are as good as, if not a little better than, the Vortex. However keep in mind that you are paying $900 more for literally no gain in performance. Both the Vortex and VCOG are 1-6 variable and are similarly weighted.

The VCOG is more durable than the Vortex, however Vortex has an expansive lifetime warranty. If it breaks during normal use they will fix it or replace it. Trijicon has a 5 year warranty on the VCOG for internal electronics, and a "limited lifetime" warranty for material and workmanship.

The VCOG is LED (no tritium) and works off a single AA battery. The Vortex is also LED and is powered off a common watch/camera battery, a CR2032 battery. The CR2032 is a bit harder to come by but you can buy a huge pack of them off Amazon and never have to worry about having a spare.

Last thing is that the magnification adjustment knob on the VCOG comes with "throw lever", which helps in rotating the knob. The Vortex doesn't have that. People who buy the Vortex usually get the "throw lever" to help adjust the knob, as it can be difficult to turn.

Lastly, if you aren't sure about variable powered optics, just get yourself a Vortex Strike Eagle. It's the Viper HD's cheaper cousin. It's also a 1-6x variable power scope, weighs 17 oz, and only costs $300. The glass isn't as "clear" and the reticule is messier than the Viper HD, but it'll give you a good feel of what the Viper HD is like. If you're unsure, start with the Strike Eagle, see if you like it (or don't) and move on from there. At worst you now have a nice Strike Eagle that you can sell to any of your friends with ARs (they have been selling like hotcakes). At best you'll keep the Strike Eagle and put it on your wife's/kids/friends AR build.

I bought a Bushnell 1-4x-24mm as a gift for a friend who had no optic. It was "OK" for the $101 (after spring rebate) but the distortion is noticeable around the edge and the reticle is too thick for my tastes. It was better than nothing, but if it were my gun, I'd save up a few more dollars.

In the similar boat, I bought for myself, an Athlon Argos 1-4x for a specific build and I'm about 95% happy with it. The only knock on it is the illumination is kinda useless in daylight, its simply not bright enough. The glass is excellent, the form factor is short, the turrets are repeatable and the reticle is FFP and useable. Its got a pretty forgiving eye relief.

My current favorite inexpensive scope currently is the Primary Arms 4-14x mildot scope. That exceeded all my expectations, especially for the pricepoint. That one, is far beyond your 1-4x criteria however, in terms of magnification, but I just can't see getting anything lower than the PA scope. Hold out for a labor day sale or something, I got the PA scope package with butler creek caps, Burris PEPR mount and scope for $229 shipped during their Memorial Day sale. Not suggesting there's going to be an equal sale on Labor Day, but might as well wait a couple weeks....

As far as budget low, variable magnification optics at or under $200:

I have used the the v-plex version of the Crossfire. I use a lot of Vortex, from this up to the Viper and long-range stuff and am happy with them.

That said, for under $200 the Weaver V3 has the best glass (made in Japan) and is the lightest and most compact. It seems to have the closest to a true 1x of the scopes as well. And the Bushnell PCL FFP 1-4 is the most feature rich and has similar if not better glass to the Crossfire for under $200. It is FFP, illuminated, but heavy. I'd go with either of those over the Crossfire. But they are good scopes for the money and you get the fantastic Vortex Warranty.

Any of the above scopes would likely be a better option than the Primary Arms 1-4 (which would be better than anything from the avoid always NCStar,Barska, etc.) but the Primary Arms 1-6 or Vortex Strike Eagle will both be a potential step up and are excellent for the money and have solid companies behind them. But they are in the $250-300 range.

In your price-range I'd just get the Weaver V3. Simple, light, good glass, and inexpensive.

After about 25 years of not owning anything except a bolt-action rifle and a breach-loading shotgun, I jumped into the AR-15 world nearly two years ago, and now I'm well-and-truly hooked. I'm still a huge nub, so don't take my advice too seriously.

There's a lot to learn just in one platform. But, don't let that keep you from getting both an AR and an AK.

Learning AKs feels overwhelming for completely different reasons than ARs. That said, I am always impressed with how well my AK performs, and how comfortable it is to shoot.

If you haven't already, head over to /r/ak47 and check out the buyer's guide so you don't make a big mistake early on. The oft recommended WASR 10 is considered the best starter AK for the money. Lurk /r/gundeals for a shot at getting one on sale; they've been seen for less than $550 recently which is better than they were pre-election.

I do have to caution you: Accessories and customization for an AK is a completely different game than ARs. You might find that your "cheap plinker" rifle ends up costing you more to trick out, resulting in the same net cost-of-ownership as an AR shooting slightly more expensive ammo. If you end up happy with a stock AK, though, it's a great investment, and a welcome break from sending .22 cal downrange.

All that said, I think if you're picking a semi-auto purely on the basis of budget and having fun hitting targets, this is what I would highly recommend (after wasting a lot of money on stuff I didn't like):

If you're planning on spending more than $150 just save your money and save up for a premium optic like an Aimpoint, EOTech, Leupold, or Trijicon. If you're looking in the 100-150 range, Holosun makes a great solar/battery powered red dot that holds zero well and has a 30-50k hour battery life(when it's actually in battery mode). If you're looking for a more traditional optic, Bushnell and Nikon have good 1-4x optics. If you're looking for more magnification a Leupold
is within your reach. Vortex has strong offerings in both red dots and traditional optics if you're willing to spend a just bit more. If you're looking in the 50-150 range I'd look into a TRS-25 or Primary Arms for a red dot. For a traditional scope i'd stick with a fixed power optic like this Bushnell, you're going to be hard pressed to find a decent magnified optic with good glass in this price range, fixed power scopes are simpler in construction and offer at least better durability but i'd consider sticking to a non magnified optic under the $100 range. If you're trying to spend even less than $50 there is apparently a very well made $20 Fieldsport which is worth a search on youtube. I wouldn't consider anything magnified under $50 but this is a good range for a cool carry handle with elevation adjustment and retro look. Shooting irons can be more fun than using optics sometimes.

Just wondering, do you have a budget in mind? If you do I could recommend stuff within that budget.

Edit: Anyways, here's what I would recommend just to start you off with:

Dye i4 Mask(These things never fog, fit glasses really well, and is low profile enough that you can still use the iron sights. I would recommend a beanie for head protection)
Condor Chest Rig(Not the best quality, but enough for Airsoft, also has MOLLE weaving so you can swap out the pouches for other MOLLE addons)

I would not recommend a sniper rifle because they need a lot of costly upgrades in order to be effective. Also playing the role of a sniper in a game is boring, you just sit back and shoot all day. You may get a lot of "kills" but in the end of the day, you're just robbing yourself of the fun/adrenaline rush of being on the front line.

Also I would not recommend a pistol until you really feel like you need one. Most of the time, especially if you play CQB, you're not going to run out of ammo any time soon, and your primary isn't going to suddenly die on you for the most part. If you do decide to buy one, I would recommend a Tokyo Marui pistol, even though it's plastic, it shoots the best out of the box and is super accurate, has crisp blowback, and they make unique pistols that other manufacturers don't make, also avoid the M92 like the plague, it's a lemon design. I am definitely considering this cheap Simmons .22 mag scope, but I'm wondering if it's worth spending a little more for something like a Nikon Prostaff for almost three times as much.

Hadn't seen the RAR in wood. They look super nice, but the durability of a plastic stock is definitely a bonus. Not so much the flex you mentioned... The Savage B22 could also be interesting in a very similair price range.

On my backup gun I run this Pinty reflex sight. It's cheap and gets the job done. The adjustable brightness is a nice touch if you're playing in a dark/light environment.

On my main gun I run the Bushnell TRS-25. Definitely the best bang for your buck. Great construction and a super clear and sharp reticle.

Thank you for the advice, luckily I've seen these suggestions elsewhere, and have taken the time to get them all taken care of. I should have been more specific in my initial post about my setup. The 10/22 has the Volquartsen bolt release, and I've installed the sling swivels and gotten a GI sling. Though, if I leave the barrel band on, as the swivel is installed in front of it, it does sit awkwardly. Do you have any thoughts on barrel bands being removed? It seems they're purely cosmetic.

Currently have 2 10 round rotary mags, and a 15 round BX mag. 2 10 round for the AR and 4 15/30 hex mags, so I feel I'm covered in that area.

And I'm expecting the red dot, as you indicated, to be only useful to a point. Hopefully the MBUS irons will do the trick at the AQT distance. Primary Arms seems to have a few good options for magnifiers. Any you can vouch for? Would you say a magnifier would be a better first investment than a trigger upgrade?

On the left is my first long gun, a Ruger American Rimfire model 8301. It has a Simmons 3-9x32 scope on an Evolution Scope Base. It currently has no other mods. I've considered dropping in the Timoney trigger, but I feel like this firearm is AOK in the current configuration. This was the second time I have fired the RAR with the scope on it. The first time was about a week ago where I shot it off of bags to get it zeroed in. Today, I shot standing/unsupported. That was a challenge. I loaded 5 rounds at a time. I learned that doing an upper body workout a few hours before going to the range can make a light firearm feel really heavy. I think I'm going to try using the higher comb cheek riser to see if I can get a more consistent cheek weld without having to contort my neck so much. My focus this range visit was shooting with both eyes open, and getting as consistent groups as I could. I fired 50 rounds of CCI Blazer. Now it makes sense to me why people shoot prone, use a monopod, or a bipod. Shooting off hand made me realize how much I move when firing. It was a great training experience that will carry over to how I shoot my other firearms.


On the right is my most recent long gun (I picked it up yesterday), a bone stock Ruger PC Carbine model 19101 (non-treaded barrel with 10 round magazine version). This was my first range visit with the PC Carbine. I was extremely excited to get some range time with this one. Prior to this, I had only fired: .22LR, 12 gauge, and .223 from long guns. The .223 was when I took a rifle course at Sig Sauer Academy (loaner MCX).

To me, it had all the fun of shooting a 10/22 with a bigger boom.

I was skeptical about trying to use ghost ring sights. I have horrible eye sight, and could not get a sight picture with Tech Sights on a 10/22 to save my life. However, these were really easy to use. I'm going to wait a while before trying it with a red dot sight.

Recoil was fine. It is a 9mm, so it was not bad by any stretch.

Trigger feels pretty good to me as far as break and pressure. If an aftermarket company releases a metal trigger (the actual trigger component), I'd strongly consider adding that.

The only thing that felt a bit odd was the magazine release. I'm going to add the Taccom one.

The surprising thing to me was that it would fit in a cheapie bag that I picked up for my shotgun. So, I'm not planning on picking up a specific bag for this firearm anytime soon.

I'm on the fence about magazines for this thing. Pmags for Glocks are pretty cost efficient compared to the cost of the Ruger SR9 mags. So, I have some research to do.

Eventually, I'll throw a picture of my three Rugers up on here.

Not pictured is my Ruger 10/22 Sporter model 1102. I have made some tweaks to it. So far, it has the Ruger BX Trigger, Volquartsen auto-bolt release, extractor, and then I just got in the Surestrike firing pin and bolt handle. It has the same scope that I put on the American Rimfire but on a Monstrum rail. I still need to zero in the scope for this one.

As far as optics go, I have this BSA 4x30 scope which I have used off and on between my Saiga and my AR15. I also have this Eotech XPS2, and this Bushnell TRS-25 red dot came in the mail today. The Eotech mainly stays on my AR, but I am excited to try out the TRS-25 on my Saiga - I've heard these work well. The Soviet style side mount hasn't worked well for me (mainly because the mount I bought was a piece of crap), so I was looking for something I could mount further forward.

As far as UTG goes, I understand there is a lot of resentment towards their company - but it seems just like the same type of blind resentment people have against Sigmas and Taurus'... People hate on things they've never tried or owned. I'm not saying that's the case with you, but it is with a lot of people. Leaper's / UTG is most definitely not an airsoft exclusive company, the majority of their products are geared for hunting/real steel shooting (real steel/hunting scopes, mil-spec buffer tubes, charging handles, rifle furniture, things that wouldn't work on airsoft guns/only work on real firearms, etc...). Although Leaper's (UTG) makes Airsoft accessories and items, the Saiga 7.62 quadrail is made for real steel firearms. I'm not even sure if anyone out there even makes a Saiga 7.62 airsoft gun?

I just have to ask you: have you even tried the UTG quadrail? I can understand hating on a company cause they've been branded as airsoft only but... you should really give it a chance before you knock it. It's light, it's sturdy, and it stays put. What else could be asked for in a rail? It's so tight, it hasn't budged a fraction of a millimeter since I put it on 3 years ago.

I found your charging handle for almost $10 cheaper. You could cut the cost of the charging handle significantly by getting a one-handed one. I used the exact same lower build kit for my first AR. The lower build kit does not come with any tools. You're going to need some tools, such as a Castle Nut Wrench and a punch set

This is kind of optional, but you're going to need a spacer if you want to use iron sights (or else the iron sights will be blocked by the red dot sight. The spacer also helps a great deal is making it more comfortable, so your head isn't awkwardly tilted, obviously this will depend on your eye height.

Don't get discouraged if this seems confusing, if all else fails, watch an ar15 building tutorial and everything will be much clearer. Here's another tutorial. Good luck.

I just put a leapers utg bug buster on my rifle. Fantastic scope and more advanced features than you'd expect for less than a bill. Illuminated reticle is also a huge bonus if you use your rifle for dusk hunting of rodents. I can't see using a scope that's more expensive than the rifle. Check out some reviews and videos. I should mention I have a takedown and the length is just right to fit in my bag. I had a simmons before that was waaay to long. Also included are a set of decent qd rings. Imo best value for the money. Went out to shoot it this weekend and it zeroed flawlessly.

If you want a good budget fixed magnification optic, I really like Primary Arms stuff - their prism scopes run around $250-300 and are tough as nails with clever BDC/ranging reticles and pretty good glass.

For budget red dots I like PA, Holosun and Vortex.

If you're just looking for a decent cheap RDS that'll get you shooting and hold zero, the Bushnell TRS-25 can be had for $50 or so and will serve just fine. Add a UTG riser (absolute cowitness / lower 1/3 cowitness) for under $10 and you're in business.

Honestly I would upgrade your red dot. For pretty cheap, you can get a bushnell TRS-25 with a riser (Like $60-$100) and those are really awesome for the money. Primary Arms are good if you like the reticle, I used to own one and I enjoyed it but I upgraded and I honestly can't recommend the Primary Arms unless you love the reticle or want the extra 2x magnification. Showed you guys and gals my first rifle the other day, a Diamondback 5.56 w/ basic Magpul furniture. I received some feedback about the scope and the not so ergonomic position it was in, which is nothing I ever thought of, even with my face buried into the stock. If you want an unmagnified optic, like a red dot, and have an astigmatism, you may wanna take a look at prism optics such as this vortex spitfire

I'm sure you can find it cheaper elsewhere, but it's a 1x optic with an etched reticle, as opposed to the projected red dot sights. I have an astigmatism and I just deal with the little bit of starburst on standard red dots, but the prism optic above may be a good choice for you.

If you want to test out a cheap red dot option to see if it's okay for you, I'd recommend the Bushnell trs-25 as it's one of the better low-cost red dots. And if you don't like it, just return it.

Since you're new to airsoft I suggest getting a cheaper red dot at first. This red dot is pretty good, only 20 bucks and has great reviews. For the height you should get a rail riser, like this.

Needed an AR to get into 3 gun. Built one. Most people these days say at the entry-level AR price point to just buy a Ruger AR-556 or a Smith & Wesson MP-15 Sport. And I honestly don't see why when build kits are so cheap. For around ~$500 you can get one of the aformentioned guns. With a factory warrenty and support. But with a A post front sight, milspec furniture, and mil-spec trigger. Basically a plain jane AR in every way.

Or you can put together something with MOE furniture, a 13.5 Mlok rail, a cheap red dot, back up ironsights, a stainless steel barrel, and a upgraded trigger.

PSA upper so far has functioned flawlessly in the first 100rds it took me to function test and zero the sights and red dot. Fit and finish on the upper is just fine. And it seems to be just as accurate or not more for an AR in this price range. The EPT trigger included with the kit is pretty nice. Its probably a little under the weight of a milspec trigger. But it has nearly no travel, and a very clean and crisp break, with a short reset.

Bushnell TRS- 25 is a nice little budget red dot. They were a nice budget optic when I first put one on my Amazon wishlist 4 years ago. They were going for $80-100 back then. Now that they seem to be going for $35-45 dollars regularly it feels like stealing.

BCM Foregrip is really cool. I like the stubby compact grip, functions as both a handstop and a traditional VFG.

The whole build weighs in at 6lbs 12.9 oz unloaded.

Personally, I think this is a much better value than buying a cheap off the shelf AR.

A few notes. Prices are subject to change. I happened to snatch up the red dot at its lowest price available, but they often show up for around $40 or so.

Second I also built this of an 80% reciever because boogaloo. This obviously doesn't include the price of tools and the jig. But I could have just as easily used a $40 Anderson lower. Minus FFL fees because those vary.

Thirdly, this is representivative of what the average joe can build today. I hate seeing "budget builds" that start with people saying they used a once in a life time coupon and just happened to have half the build laying around in their garage. This isn't a gun thing either, every hobby has people like this. Also everyone seems to always have a "buddy" that is capable of doing some normally really expensive or complicated task for basically free. Not everyone went to kindergarden with some guy who just happens to be able to resurface the face of a engine block on their own dime Jim!. /rant.

Fourthly, I painted the reciever with truck bed liner. Don't do this. It goes on super thick, takes forever to dry as evidence from my smudge marks, and fucks up all the tolerances in the gun. But it does fit the spirit of the build. And the battle worn look is kind of cool, if it only fit the rest of the rifle.

I have two 22LR rifles, one with a Simmons 3-9 rimfire scope for about $40, one with a Vortex Crossfire 2 3-9 for more like $120.

The simmons is sufficient, but the extra $100 does buy a significantly sharper view. So I guess it depends on what your wallet likes. I would point you to the nicer glass, especially if you're practicing distance/bullseye shooting.

FFP is really only important for helping you figure out how far or how big a target is. You don't need such a thing for rimfire shooting IMO.

You'll be fine with a decent rimfire scope. If you get serious about it you can invest later. I have two rimfire scopes, both around $40: a Simmons .22 Mag Fixed Power 4x32mm and a Simmons .22 Mag Variable POwer 3-9x32mm. They work fine for plinking with .22 and a friend of mine uses his for small game hunting.

More expensive scopes will work for .22, and are definitely nicer, but part of the expense is making them robust enough to withstand the recoil of much more powerful centerfire rounds.

Onto the discription! What this is is my grandfather's Winchester Model 290, which retailed for the very expensive price of $75 new in the 70's. I had shown an interest in firearms for years now, so on my 18th birthday my dad dug this out of the attic and said, "You get it working and we'll go shooting." Luckily there was a gun cleaning kit with it, also from the 1970s. I cleaned out the gun, and put 350 rounds of .22 through it with 2 minor feeding hiccups.

The range trip confirmed the barely adjustable plastic sights were indeed crap, as I had ascertained on the internet, and I ordered the cheap .22 scope with dovetail mounts for the gun. I don't expect it to be winning any accuracy awards and is going to be used as a plinker, so I didn't need a high budget, ultra clear scope. I ended up just going for the Simmons .22 mag It works. Nothing fancy.

I really just like how the rifle looks with a scope. It seems very natural and rounds out the look. I'll most likely go to zero it in the next few days.

I realize you said you wanted something more compact, but if you change your mind the inexpensive 3-9x simmons rimfire scope works pretty well. Only thing I don't like is adjusting it (clicks / detents for the turrets aren't very strong, and it takes a bit of back and forth between windage/elevation adjustments to get it set right). Once sighted in it works great though and holds zero well. It's a set and forget setup, not really meant for adjusting elevation to suit target. I sighted mine for 100 yards and just hold over/under as needed for other ranges.

The 36 colors are an added bonus. It's a little out of your price range but it's one of the best scopes I've owned.

My MK II has a BSA Sweet 22 3-9x40 ($50 on Amazon) mounted with some Weaver low-profile rings ($6 at Wal-Mart) on top of Weaver #24 mounts ($11 for 2 on Amazon). I had to remove the rear sight with a drift punch to allow the objective bell to clear the barrel properly. I do not recommend medium/high profile rings on this rifle; even with low profile rings I'm about 1/4" low on the cheek weld.

The scope is amazing for the money; it has enough elevation to mess around at 250 yards if you want, the turrets work pretty well.

If plinking is your major use, consider getting raised rings so you can still use the iron sights. See under the scope.

Also note that the standard recommended 3-9x scopes will add a lot of weight to a very light rifle. Can make long plinking sessions not as much fun. Add a rail and quick detach rings if you want the flexibility to remove it. Bonus with rails is you get lots more options on optics like red dots, etc.

Also, check if your scope is 1/2 1 inch or 30mm before buying mounts like I just linked.

Rifle stuff:

• Get a bundle of regular chamber flags, like [these]. There's no reason to spend that much on a chamber flag.
  
• I'm a big fan of Holosun Red Dots, especially the motion activated circle dot (EoTech style reticle) models like the HS503GU. The smaller dot definitely helps with longer range-small target shots.
  
• If you're going to stick with the TRS-25 (I've competed with one myself), go for the tall riser rather than the medium. Many competitors are moving to 2.04" optic mounts for a more upright head position, the one you linked works out to be 1.54". [Link]
  
• The fancy charging handle is somewhere between nice-to-have and pointless. It all depends on whether your local clubs stage guns hot/cold, and whether you have to drop the mag and clear the chamber before dumping the gun. The 4 clubs I shoot at all have different rules for this.
  
• I would skip the MS4 sling and the QD end plate. Single point is good in very specific circumstances, which don't exist in 3gun. Save the cash, and get an MS1. Note that you will rarely need or use a sling in 3gun. 2gun/combat type matches generally require one however.

• If you don't already have a bore snake and a cleaning rod, I would pick up both. Bore snake for simple bore maintenance, and cleaning rod to pound out a squib. If you shoot enough, you will eventually get a squib.
  
• You will want to buy a handful of mags. Stick with PMAGs, there's no real reason to get anything else.

• That holster may not work well with that belt. I would get an ALS version with mid or low ride mount. Or get a purpose made friction only holster. I use a 6930ALS mid ride-light bearing with a G19.
  
• I have the same pistol mag caddys. No complaints from me, but if you really want to be competitive from the start, you may want something that allows adjustment for better indexing. Someone else will be able to recommend them for you.

• Opening up the loading port will help, without a doubt.
  
• That shell caddy is really nice. I personally use Taccom caddies due to their price.

• Might be worth looking into Taccom's match saver [link]. No opinion one way or another. Note that match saver's tend to be consumable items, as dumping the shotgun after using the match saver will sometimes break it.

• You will get really annoyed carrying around your gear, ammo, snacks, and water. There's a reason that carts and wagons are so prevalent. I personally use a $40 collapsible wagon from Walmart, because I can't fit anything bigger in my car.

Burris has a $40 mail-in rebate going on. So I bought a TRS-25 off Amazon for about $60 shipped. It's already on my 10/22 and it seems pretty nice. And for $20 it seems like a steal. Price has gone up on Amazon by about $10 since then, but $30 is still a good price IMO.


Found myself cooped-up one night last week with a laptop and a bottle of bourbon. This was all the motivation I needed to finally order the .22 conversion kit I've been wanting needing. It will be a 2-3 month wait for a kit that costs more than most off-the-shelf .22 pistols. I'll be getting mags to try it with both a single and a double-stack gun. If anyone's interested, I can make a post about it when it comes.

There are also "combat" oriented ones, such as the EOTech or Trijicon ACOG, but they get pricey.

OP, this is good advice if you live in the 20th century or have a hundred dollar rifle.

200 bucks will get you a perfectly good 4-12 vortex scope that will do everything OP wants it to do.

Though yeah, like you said, Primary Arms is also a good option for going cheaper. A 4-14 with first focal plane will only run you 230 bucks. Vortex has a killer warranty though.

I'm going to go yet another route and suggest the Nikon ProStaff Rimfire. Mine rides on my 10/22 and they're a great value scope. The BDC is nice, if that tickles your fancy. it's a 3-9, not a 2-7, if that matters much.

It should be a 3/8" dovetail on the top so anything that has a 3/8" dovetail mount will work with it. I use a simmons 3-9x32mm on my 795 that works pretty well.

The simmons is probably about on par with the packaged scope but the AO will be a benefit.

but if you picked up a Nikon rimfire prostaff you would have a stellar package, downside to the prostaff is I don't think it comes with rings so you would need to buy rings too ($30 on the high end). This would put you about $50 over budget.

Its pretty small but can go very bright, the battery also lasts insanely long. I recently discovered Taofledermaus on youtube uses one on their guns.

Just run irons for now man, buy a KNS front sight post (I use the .052 dot post but for precision work the inverted V is pretty awesome) and just save the money to put towards your ACOG.

If you are completely opposed to using irons for now, there are a few mid range red dots but they are all battery operated, I am currently using a Bushnell TRS-25 because it has around 128 days battery life on a medium setting. I keep about 1.5 years worth of batteries in my MOE+ grip.

If you are absolutely opposed to a red dot with batteries, the Meprolight is the lowest priced non-battery operated optic that I am aware of.

I would pass on that. For an extra 120 you can get a much nicer rifle. Buy that plus a cheap red dot like the trs25or iron sights and you be set with a sweet mid grade rifle. His rifle looks pretty stock aside from the cheap looking handguard and possibly an "enhanced" trigger.

Vortex makes great optics for the price. Look for them on Amazon and you can probably find something appropriate for your lever gun. I have a Crossfire II 1-4x24 on my Henry Big Boy and it looks and works great. You might want more than 4x for your .308 at 300yd though.

You will probably also want to get a hammer extension. Getting your thumb on the hammer can be hard with an optic on there.

To expand on what /u/Lost_Thought said, the link you included has the standard mount that will result with a very close mount, like this or this.

If you want it mounted to better co-witness with your iron sights, you will need a rise mount that will end up looking like this.

The medium riser will co-witness with your irons. The high riser will give you a lower 1/3 co-witness.

These are the only two items (sight and one riser) you would likely need to purchase.

Lots of people like the Bushnell TRS-25 Red Dot, but I personally don't have any experience with it. Vortex makes some great red dots for under $200, and so does Holosun. You can also check out Primary Arms, as they make some of their own brand optics.

The scope is a BSA sweet .22, I used medium rings but because of that I have a chin weld. I think I could have gotten away with low rings, that way you can have a cheek weld. But its fine with me the way it is, I love it.

The vortex Strike Eagle is highly reviewed, but I have not seen one in person. I do plan to purchase one at some point. It is slightly over your budget at ~$320, but I think it is something that you should take a look at.

Isn't it the $60 one in this list? Because as far as I can see, those are exactly the same as this and this and this and this. I hate to be down on your new toy, but in my honest opinion, even plastic open sights are better than a sub-$100 optic on an AR.

It's probably pretty hit or miss with low-end optics. I have This UTG on my AR while I save up for an aimpoint/eotech/maybe an acog.

It holds zero, still works fine (lights randomly turn on sometimes when the batteries are in which is odd but not really a problem), and I've used it out to 300 yards successfully.

My 2 cents:

I just bought my first gun last night. It is a 10/22. I went to Sports Authority. The wood stock model was $239, the synthetic stock was $269, and the take down was $359. They didn't have anyone that was at all versed in firearms so I took to Google.

The general consensus is to get the wood stock since it's the cheapest, and for the extra cost of the other parts you can just upgrade on your own and get better components. Not really sure what you mean by "portability", it's not a very big gun to begin with. The take down is not significantly smaller once it's in a bag or other case.

As for a scope, I ordered this one from Amazon. It's cheap and gets good reviews for my purpose (squirrels, rabbits, plinking).

The thing is, there are so many options for upgrades with the 10/22 that it doesn't make too much sense to buy an expensive base factory setup. It's like buying a new car and paying the dealer a few hundred bucks for floor mats when you can get the same thing (or better) elsewhere for cheaper.

Sorry to break it to you, but there is a lot more competition in the sup $200 micro red dot market.

You want this particular Mk. II as opposed one the cheaper ones because it has the AccuTrigger.

Personally, because I live in one of the many states that let's it's citizens have nice things, I would save up a bit more for this, and slap one of these, one of these and one of these on it.

I realize this isn't exactly what you're looking for, but this is probably your best bet at this price point.

if you're going to buy an optic, first determine if you need one to begin with. Iron sights are perfectly serviceable, though getting a proper cheek weld can be problematic with a paintball mask or an unfitted/untrimmed mesh mask.

spend $20ish and buy something like an aimsports-elcheapo-dot and take the time to zero it.

If you wear glasses, or have an Astigmatism affecting your vision, the dot may appear blurry or 'starburst'. to mitigate this, use the lowest tolerable brightness that you can still quickly acquire. If you still experience starbursting, you need a better quality optic.

I highly recommend looking into the lower end of 'real steel' quality sights such as this Bushnell for $70

to zero, clamp your gun in a vice and shoot at a piece of paper a few times on semi at the range you wish to engage at. use the hex wrench to move the center of the dot over the center of the group of holes, then draw a dot on the paper and shoot for the dot. if you hit the dot or close enough, its zeroed, otherwise, repeat until it is.

Now I'm also seeing that FFP (Front Focal Plane) is superior to SFP (Secondary Focal Plane), and a good budget scope for FFP is the Primary Arms Primary Arms 4-14X FFP? Could I use that at ranges below 100 yards?

I run a Bushnell TRS-25 on my slab-side Competition and I'm happy enough with it. I mostly just plink steel with it and it's good enough for me.

Or whatever kind is appropriate. They all have a 3/8" rimfire base machined in to the receiver, so if you have a rimfire scope that has 3/8" mounts you don't need anything. Otherwise the receiver is also drilled and tapped for Weaver #12 mounts and you can pick up a picatinny rail that will fit on those holes.

Are fantastic little scopes for use on this kind of rifle. They have a LOT of features for the money, they come with QD rings, etc. I run this exact one on my 10/22 Takedown Tactical and it's great. I run this scope's bigger brother on my Ruger American Rimfire.

Don't know if you ordered one yet but if you're looking for a proper scope with magnification and some illumination my father has had good results with this

My opinion is that variable optics gives you flexibility to use the right magnification for the distance that you are shooting at. At 1-4X, there is a lot of good glass for the money.

my scope suggestion would be a BSA sweet .22 scope. For $40 its great. Have one on my 795 and after about 1500 rounds, no issues at all. Mounted with some loc-tite, it hasnt lost zero at all.

Sights you can find these cheaper elsewhere, the standard MBUS are fine.

If you want a magnified optic (unless you really enjoy shooting irons or want to shoot more than 100-200 yards) this scope or this scope with either Burris PEPR or Aero Precision Ultralight mount if you want something is isn't fuckheavy. And yes, optics are expensive. You'll do fine with MBUS for a while but save up for an optic eventually.

This is what I currently use on my Avalon right now... I enjoy it but wish it had a 1-4x instead.

I have a vortex diamondback 4-12 for 200 bucks on amazon it's great for that range and center at 50 yards because point of impact(POI) is the same at 50-200 yards, it's not too big or bulky and gets the job done

If you are looking at $100 max, the Bushnell TRS-25 is pretty hard to beat. Without a riser, it is $47, and in the mid $50's with one, which you would definitely want on an AR.
