They're all pretty much equivalent as software is concerned. The hardware is a matter of personal preference, so it's hard to call one the "best".

I use this Logitech, and like it fine. If I were buying one today, I'd get this (solar charging, fast switching between devices) or this (no fast switching, I don't think, but a numpad etc) instead, based on the rave reviews of their longevity.

The case you choose will really depend on how you plan to use your iPad. Mine rarely leaves the house, and I've got a soft foam-type sleeve and a messenger bag for when it does. Since I really only want to protect it from scratches, I went with the Incipio NGP shell/case. I think it's made of semi-rigid TPU (hard rubber) material (or something similar to TPU). It adds very little bulk, so it was at the top of my list. It comes with a screen protector, too.

As far as the screen protector goes, I have had one on every iPhone and iPad I've ever owned. It's a personal preference, and I know people who don't use them, but I'm not willing to risk a scratch on the glass. I always buy the static-cling type (almost all the ones you'll find are this type).

If you want to get creative, you can hollow out an old (large) book and use it as a hard case for travel. I've done this for my Kindle and iPad. For the iPad, a hardcover sketch book works well because it's not too thick, but totally protects the iPad. Here's a guide.

As far as other gear, get a stylus if you want to draw or use any of the handwriting (notes) apps. There are plenty of those on the market. I backed the HAND Stylus on Kickstarter, but I've also used others (get one with a rubber, not foam, tip). You might also be interested in a keyboard. Logitech makes an excellent one with special iPad function buttons. If you want a stand, the Compass from Twelve South is great.

I really like this Logitech keyboard. It's full sized and is really thin. Paired with BeeKeyboard makes it even better

I started with an iPad 3, moved to an iPad Air and now have the iPad Pro 10.5. I have various Belkin and Logitech case/keyboards for the iPad 3/Air but I always go back to the Logitech Tablet Keyboard for Apple. Is a full size keyboard and the case keeps the keys protected when it's in my backpack.

FYI. This is the keyboard I bought and I absolutely love it.

Started using an iPad my second year (middle of second week!). So far I'm using Goodreader to annotate PDFs (which you can sync to dropbox). Dropbox for easy access to notes. I used Splashtop (remote access to PC) to use a program on my laptop. I'm still getting used to it... make sure you play around and practice with it before school starts. Because I downloaded the apps, made sure I knew how to open files with it... but then I never actually practiced taking notes on it... so I spent one hour of lecture trying to figure it out... gave up and just ended up handwriting notes on my syllabus for the rest of the day.

I also bought a Logitech keyboard. It's not full size but it's easy to adapt to. I also bought a stylus, which is sort of helpful. You really can't write out nice, neat notes on iPad (which is why I stick to typing), but I like to use it instead of my finger.

I also downloaded PenUltimate and bought an Office application, but I haven't really used those.

Also, Scramble. Draw Something. ;) Also Kindle.

I've seen this recommended in a different thread: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Tablet-Keyboard-Keyboard-generation/dp/B0054L8MR8 - it seems like a combination of the features I've mentioned so far, but at half the price.

I'll probably get this one when my current keyboard breaks for good.
