I have also been on a hunt for good figures recently, and I have been compiling a list of what I feel are the best figures
Unit 01 - Medicom Real Action Heroes: I've found that RAH figures are very high quality, but are also very high in price. It truly is a wonderful and well done figure, using a certain material to cover where the joints connect, giving it the detail of a statue but still pose-able. I would also like to take note of how cute the accessories are. I love how you can take out or put in an entry plug or attach a umbilical cable to it.
Other Units - RAH is usually a good place to start with other Evas. Most of the rebuild Evas have a RAH, and they are usually pretty good. Especially Unit 13
Rei - There are alot of good choices for Rei. The best figure I've seen is the Rebuild of Evangelion Entry Plug Interior Ver. Rei. Sadly not only is this figure very well done, it is also very hard to find and very expensive. I have only been able to find one website that have it in stock. If you actually want a figure, I really like the Max Factory figure. For something not so pricey, it is pretty great, and gets the hair right and good looking, something that other figures can not achieve (Like in my opinion the RAH figure). If you want something a little different, this is coming out soon and I feel is very unique and well done.
Asuka - Unlike Rei, Asuka's Medicom RAH figure is actually pretty good. There are also Asuka versions of the three figures I listed for Rei (Here, here and here) that are just as good as Rei.
I haven't done as much research into other characters, but I found that Medicom RAH has some pretty good ones for the other pilots. Also there is a Mari version of that upcoming doll if you're into that.
