    Features:
  • This is an 8" powered subwoofer capable of producing 60 watts (RMS) output. The subwoofer has a frequency response range of 50 to 250 Hz with a lowpass crossover filter, which can be adjusted from 50 to 150 Hz. Gain and frequency knobs on the control panel allow you to adjust the crossover filter and the power output for the optimum blend and balance of bass output with your stereo or surround speakers.
  • The subwoofer has multiple input options, which allow it to be used with any existing stereo or 5.1 (or greater) amplifier system. For each input there is a corresponding output.
  • High-level inputs accept a full-range signal from the amplifier's stereo speaker outputs. When connecting the unit as part of a 5.1 system, these would be taken off the Front Left and Front Right outputs in parallel to the standard pair of front speakers. The subwoofer provides its own power and includes impedance matching circuitry, so this will not reduce the power output to the front speakers or affect the overall impedance load on the amplifier.
  • Additionally, the subwoofer has a set of right/left Line Level inputs. If using a standard stereo system, without a special subwoofer output, you can connect these to the left and right line level outputs on the amp. The subwoofer will then combine the signals to process the mono bass signal it needs to drive the speaker. If you are using an amplifier with a single mono subwoofer line level output, simply use an RCA "Y" cable to split the output and send it to the two line level inputs on the subwoofer.
  • The subwoofer is housed in an attractive black wood cabinet that measures 13.75" x 11.75" x 11.75" (H x W x D). The driver and a 2 3/4" sound port are located on the front, covered by a black cloth speaker grill.

Denon X-1000: $200

Dayton B652 x3 (6 speakers total, save the extra): $105

Monoprice sub: $100

I know you say HTIB is all he needs, but honestly, you get a LOT more by piecing it together, for the same price.

Sounds amazing, even a cheap sub will make the system sound much better. There are lots of options under $200 from Polk, Klipsch, and Monoprice. Just make sure there are speaker level inputs like these ones:

The basics setup could be a mini amp connected via bluetooth or a 3.5mm to RCA cable to your Echo, passive bookshelf speakers and an active subwoofer:

$30-$40 for a chinese mini amp (Douk Audio, Nobsound, SMSL etc.) or a little more if you want Bluetooth

$80 for a budget active subwoofer (this one for example) with high level inputs so that you can connect to to the speakers

This leaves about $180 for the part that contributes most to the overall sound quality, the bookshelf speakers. Here I would go through the reviews and find the ones that have sound characteristics that match your preferences best. Because you only need passive speakers, you have a lot of options and you can browse craigslist and eBay for good deals on used ones.

Yes, it would appear so. Even though you are using the external input (vs docking your iPod in the speaker dock), we would assume that the line-level signal is coming out of the White and Red RCA outputs on the back. Those could be connected directly to any sub woofer with Left/Right RCA line-level inputs. For example, this popular sub woofer on Amazon:

The only question is whether those line-level outputs on the back adjust the volume up/down with the iKick gadget or whether they are fixed-level? You may be stuck with finding this out empirically since it doesn't appear to be documented.

The better option is to go with a receiver and speakers. There are a lot of advantages to this the biggest one is flexibility. You can replace one without the other and you and upgrade. However, if you just have to have a soundbar and you accept the limitations they bring go for it. I for one don't hate soundbars as they sound so much better than the TV speakers. My thing is get one that you can add a powered sub to. This way you have a sub if you decide to upgrade to an AVR and if the soundbar craps out you sill have one for the next soundbar. Hear are some examples of what I would do.

  • Vizio $115-130 depending what model you want. I would go with the 38" if you're getting a 50" TV.

  • Yamaha YAS-105 $300 sounds pretty good without the sub but you can add one in later if you want.

  • Sub - Dayton Sub 800 $200 or Monoprice $135 should do you fine. Get this adapter $10 to get the best volume out of it.

Don't know what your speakers are going to cost but that, combined with the receiver, won't leave much for a subwoofer. With that in mind: http://www.amazon.ca/Monoprice-108248-60-Watt-Powered-Subwoofer/dp/B009GUTJ34/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454101579&sr=8-1&keywords=monoprice+subwoofer

Many home theater subwoofers have speaker wire inputs, check out this one as an example:

The SMSL Q5 has a remote, might be worth checking out.

Maybe a pair of powered speakers would fit the bill:

If you want to get closer to $200, adding a sub would be a great addition.

Hmm both well out my price range unfortunately. I just moved into my first house and have a whole bunch of stuff to buy, I only have very little too spend right now. I could get something better later. How bout this monoprice sub?

It's connected via 1/4" to my PC's Scarlett Focusrite Solo interface or to my Vizio's rca out. I've been considering getting an old receiver so I don't have to keep switching between the 2 and potentially hook up a record player but I've never had a receiver and don't know about them.

In another comment I asked about how I should hook a sub up
