If you're on PS4, you have plenty of options. Lots of compatible usb interfaces that will work.

I'm on xbox 1, and it is very limited. The best dongle option I've found for availability/price is using BandFuse adapters (the bright orange ones) -- they're a 3.5mm mono plug, so do whatever's needed to send that signal.

That said, the absolute cleanest signal I've managed to get so far is with a Shure SM58 connected straight to my controller's chat adapter with an XLR->4-pole w/ the headphone cord cut off (and an extender). Absolutely amazing to sing with.

A close 2nd for cleanest signal was using my MKE600 on battery power plugged into the usb sound adapter that came with my Cronus Max (seriously -- that thing works like a charm, but the only way to get it is with the $60 kit).

Just a follow up question: do you know what the correct wiring should be between the female XLR connector and the TRRS 3.5mm phone connector? For the XLR connector pin 1 is ground, pin 2 is hot, and pin 3 is cold. For the 3.5mm connector let's assume ring 2 is ground and sleeve is microphone.

Would it be the following?

  • pin 2 wired to sleeve

  • pin 1 & pin 3 wired to ring 2

Edit: As much fun as it would be to make a project out of this, I found and decided to go for this cable. Still, feel free to comment on my wiring question!

That will probably not work well for you.

The 3.5mm jack on that cable is TRS, and the 3.5mm dongle for a phone is TRRS and is designed for two channels of OUTbound audio and one channel of INbound audio (from a wired headset mic.) When you plug in a TRS, it shorts the "microphone input" ring to ground, so you aren't even going to get to the audio input channel with that connector.

You can use a TRRS adapter and a dynamic mic, but you may need a preamp inline in order to get a good clean signal.

If you plan on doing this sort of recording I'd recommend getting a Zoom recorder or one of the Shure Motiv line of iOS mics / interfaces. (I have an MV88 that I carry around everywhere, just in case I find something interesting I want to record.)
