I don't have a flamethrower, but I do have one of these propane flame torches for weed control.

For comparison, the big burners on a high-end domestic gas stovetop put out about 20,000 BTU/hr, the commercial ranges used in Chinese restaurants for heating woks put out 80-100,000 BTU/hr, and turkey fryer bases put out 50-180,000 BTU/hr.

The "Mr Heater" flame torch (love the name), on the other hand, puts out 500,000 BTU/hr.

Even so, it is surprisingly ineffective for melting ice and snow. In my mind, I would sort of wave it at a pile of snow and watch with satisfaction as it melted instantly, or even vaporized. In practice - nothing of the sort. You point it at some snow, and you wait .. and wait ... and wait ... and eventually it begins to melt.

So, sadly, I don't think a flamethrower is the answer.
