I never had morning sickness, but I am super sensitive to vitamins in general, pregnant or not, and only have success with vitamins made from whole foods (they're known as "whole food vitamins"). They are much less processed and more easily absorbed. When I take generic or one-a-day cheap vitamins, even with food, I throw them up almost immediately, but I can take whole food vitamins on an empty stomach with absolutely no issues. There are a lot of prenatal options. These are the ones I take currently (that price is for a 3 month supply), and I love them.

Your first purchases should be:

  • Good prenatal vitamins for her
  • Books to inform you of what's happening, what will happen next, what sorts of things you should be doing, etc.

The /r/predaddit Wiki has information on books (a lot of different books listed with brief descriptions - I am partial to The Birth Partner as the husband/partner, but there are a lot of other very useful books there too).

My wife has been taking these prenatals - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BEDU2M - and she likes them. But everyone has their own opinion on what is and isn't good (though I did research them and they were well-regarded).

I'd suggest reading this article by Chris Kresser, but essentially, folic acid is the synthetic form of folate. Its not as easily absorbed and its not good in higher doses.

Because folate is rather difficult to find in prenatals, I get my prenatal multis on Amazon, as well as additional folate tabs and my DHA/EPA.

All three can be taken together and on an empty stomach. The multi is 3 times a day, folate and DHA once a day. They haven't made me nauseous or burped, although I do take the DHA with lunch, so that could be why. I WILL say the multis have a grassy/earthy smell to them, but I really like that the ingredients are natural and none of the synthetic stuff you usually find. I hope this has helped you some and if you have any other questions, please let me know! 😊

These expensive bastards. They were recommended to me because the last set I had made me throw up (unless I took them 45 minutes after eating a large meal).
