Let me give you a total rundown, to help you to make an informed decision. I'm in the UK, so I'm using UK links and GBP - if you're somewhere else, keep that in mind.

Option 1 - Wii:

Wii console with sensor bar and necessary cables etc.

You will be able to play Wii games. If you buy an original model with GameCube compatability, you will be able to play GameCube games as well (for which you will require GameCube controllers).

You can tell if any given Wii console is one such model by the presence of black GameCube controller ports on the top, like this one has https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nintendo-Wii-Console-Bundle-4-Games-Wires-Controller-and-Nunchuck/153243375233?hash=item23ae045681:g:vtIAAOSwhzhb3C7p:rk:27:pf:

This one, on the other hand, does not: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nintendo-Wii-Console-Wii-Sports-Resort-Bundle-Free-Delivery-Batteries/132841925894?hash=item1eedfeed06:g:nuEAAOSwzHNb3DQb:rk:26:pf:

The Wii no longer has an online shop, and for most intents and purposes, there is no online play anymore.

A Wii console, including sensor bar, cables, and one Wii Remote and Nunchuck, along with some games, looks like it will cost you around £20-70 on Ebay.

Option 2 - Wii U:

Wii U console (with Wii U Gamepad controller), sensor bar and necessary cables etc.

You will be able to play Wii U games as well as Wii games.

Most Wii U games still have online play, including Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon.

There is also an online eShop where you can purchase Wii U games digitally, although you can also still use physical discs. There's also a selection of Wii games available for digital purchase, as well as a variety of games from older retro consoles. Of course, discs are still an option.

A Wii U console, gamepad, sensor bar and cables, along with some games, looks like it will cost you around £100-£250 on Ebay.

Whichever of those you buy, you will still need those additional Wii Remotes and Nunchucks.

There are two types of Wii Remotes, as the other guy mentioned - original Wii Remotes and Wii Remotes with Wii Motion Plus. If a Wii Remote has Wii Motion Plus built-in, it will say "Wii Motion Plus" around the bottom of the front of the remote. These remotes are supposedly more accurate. There are some games, including The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Wii Sports Resort, that will not work if you do not have Wii Motion Plus remotes.

There are also Wii Remotes that take AA batteries, and Wii Remotes that do not take AA batteries, but have to be charged in a charging dock, which can be purchased for a further £10-15. Make sure you get the correct type - you can tell by looking at the back of the remote, if there is a detachable cover, it takes AA batteries, and if there are metal conductors and no detachable cover, it needs to be charged in a dock.

Note that there are knock-off, fake Wii Remotes. From what I've read, most of them work, but are lower quality in terms of feel, reliability and function, so I would recommend avoiding these if possible.

A legitimate Wii Motion Plus remote looks like this. It says "Wii Motion Plus INSIDE" in a semicircular shape around the bottom of the front of the remote.

Most fakes I've seen have that text look different, like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLACK-REMOTE-CONTROLLER-NUNCHUCK-FOR-NINTENDO-WII-WITH-BUILT-IN-MOTION-PLUS/162268894693?hash=item25c7fad5e5:g:YTIAAOSwKOJYHGov:rk:26:pf:

Wii Motion Plus remotes will cost you around £20-45 each. Normal, non Motion-Plus remotes will cost around £5-15 each. You can use a combination of Motion Plus and normal remotes if you so please.

A nunchuck will cost you around £5-15 each too, but often come bundled more cheaply with remotes.

In short, an old Wii will be considerably cheaper, and depending on the model you can get, you may be able to play GameCube games too. However, the old Wii does not have online functionality and cannot play Wii U games, unlike the more expensive Wii U.

All in all, a Wii U with accessories including 4 official Wii Motion Plus remotes and nunchucks might cost around £270. That's assuming £150 for the Wii U console, gamepad, sensor bar, chargers and display cable, £90 for 4 Wii Motion Plus remotes and £30 for 4 nunchucks.

A Wii with accessories including 4 official Wii Motion Plus remotes and nunchucks might cost around £130. That's assuming £50 for the Wii console, display cable, charger, sensor bar, Wii Remote and a Nunchuck, and then £60 for 3 Wii Motion Plus remotes and £20 for 3 nunchucks.

Those prices and the value of a purchase may vary widely, however, depending on what's for sale at the time, and what games are bundled in.

If you find anything and you're not sure if it's what you wanted, chuck me a link and I'll take a look.

I hope this helps :)
