Charging/wired controllers will suck though... I'm holding out for a stand that charges controllers so I'm not THAT bugged by it.
You can pick up a third party dongle for like $6. I also suggest picking up a charging base to save on those batteries.
I have the nyko charge base. So far so good (4 months). Comes with 2 batteries and is currently only $18 on Amazon. Automatically stops charging when batteries are at %100. I'm probably going to at least buy one more for my apartment.
You can get one of these:

I personally just have a AA battery charger, 2 in the controller, 2 "perpetually charging", i swap them out when needed.
Thanks! I bought two and the charger http://www.amazon.com/Nyko-Charge-Base-360-Xbox/dp/B00273Z9WM
I have the Nyko rechargeable batteries and base and I like it a lot. Just drop the controller on the base after a session of playing and it's ready to go the next time I play.
I ordered this about a year and a half ago.
Batteries still have hold a charge well and they can be charged by the standard Xbox charging cable if needed (if you want to play and charge at the same time).
Also it has a usb outlet in the front so you can use that instead of plugging in to the xbox across the room. or you can just charge your phone.
edit: i forgot to mention the batteries can be purchased seperately for like $8 if needed but i haven't had to yet
I made the switch to wireless about 6 months ago and have been very happy. Bought this charging base
I would love to, but it uses a charging dock...

This is what I was looking at getting, since I will be getting a 2nd controller.
I bought one of these the day I got my 360 three or four years ago now and have not had a problem. I find it to be pretty convenient too. Drop in the controller and let it do its thing.
This unit scored 4.5 out of 5 on Amazon. Please note that this model is discontinued and there are many refurbished units available. This looks like a refurbished unit. I would check warranty. Pass if 180 days or less. You can get a 1 year warranty on a refurbished unit if bought from the Dell Outlet. I paid $360 new from Amazon in December right as these were being discounted/discontinued. You will also need a keyboard & a mouse ($25-50), a headset with mic ($10-100+) and possibly a monitor ($100-150).
You are not going to get an unbiased opinion on a pre-built PC in a sub-reddit called buildapc. These are a great buy at ~$360 for new(er) units. These can be use for low to middle desktop gaming but are designed as an affordable set-top PC console. For the listed games, this unit will do okay to very good (not great to mind blowing fabulous) graphics.
Things to know:
I use that same 3rd party battery pack, but I've got the Nyko Charge Base along with it. The battery packs stay in my two controllers constantly, and I just put them back in the base most nights. I've never had an instance of the batteries going out on me. Had them almost two years, no problems. The metal connectors are starting to wear a little bit, but haven't seen any
A good alternative would also be to pick up a charge station for the controllers. They typically come with rechargeable battery packs: drop ur controllers onto it when ur done playing and they never go dead. Save urself the battery cost and hassle :)
I have this one. It works like a charm.

As long as we're posting alternatives, this has been working extremely well for me for over a year.
haha maybe my play n charge was just shitty. I grabbed 2 of these and now all 4 of my controllers are charged all the time. The little flap in front uncovers a powered USB so someone else could use that trick with a play-n-charge too.
$24.99 for Nyko Charge Base 360 S for Xbox 360
And thats two batteries.
This one from Nyko is amazing. It replaces the 360 battery packs with it's own, so you just drop it into the cradle and it recharges. It comes with 2 battery packs and 2 controllers fit on the cradle.

I used to have this thing for charging the removable battery packs, and this for when I wanted to play while I charged. Are you talking about those pads where put the whole controller on it, like this Nyko thing?
Woo free money! 26!
Edit: Link, because batteries are more costly. Anything else on WL works too. :D
