Its partly down to history. The fandom was formed in San Fransisco during the 1980's, and that climate influenced it in major ways. Not only did the culture of sexual openness and LGBT acceptance rub off on the fandom, a lot of early members were LGBT themselves, and that shows in their creative works. Something like out of position is just as much a novel about gay romance as it is about furry erotica. This in turn attracts more LGBT people, continuing the trend.

As for female anthros, they are less common than males, but not by that much. I'd estimate maybe an 80/20 split at worst, at least for primary characters the creator personally identifies with. People usually choose a fursona that matches their gender identity, and since the fandom skews male that means our alter-egos skew male as well.

You see female characters over-represented in smut though, probably because the bisexual portion of the fandom still favors straight sex when it comes to porn.

Apparently I'm a gay tiger playing as a starter in the NFL...

I was reading this actually. I'm not really a reader but I noticed that it was free so I said fuck it. Good so far.

This is one of the few book series you gotta get in print or at least use a decent tablet. The illustrations are by Blotch, who were a great artist team.

Here's the Amazon link if your shy about reading a furry book, read the reviews. This book is an amazing LGBT book without the furry label, especially if you love romance.

It may not be super popular around here since it's a "Furry" book (anthro animals), but Out of Position (and the rest of the series) by Kyell Gold is about a football player (Tiger) that discovers that he's gay, and his boyfriend (Fox) struggling with balancing being an individual and being a boyfriend. I really like it: the football scenes are written well, the porn scenes are super hot, and there are a few illustrations along the way. It isn't for everyone, but anyone who's intrigued should check it out.

If you don't mind all of the characters being animal-people, I highly suggest Kyell Gold's "Out of Position". It's hands down the best gay romance novel I've ever read (and there's a sequel!). Sure, the furry stuff can be weird at first, but it's written well enough that most people can look past it. Plus, it's a Kindle book, you can always sample the first chapter. Link

If you're looking for something of the bi pursuasion, I've heard good things about Catherynne Valente's "Palimpsest". I've only read the first few chapters, but it seems fairly decent so far. I'm not sure how much of a "Romance" novel it is however... right now it seems more like a "Fantasy Novel Who's Central Plot Revolves Around Sex", which is almost as good, right ;P? Link
