Inexpensive vise screws can be had from Lee-Valley. Their "tail vise screw" is excellent for making a leg vise or traditional tail vise. I'd not make a traditional tail vise unless you're up for a ton of work: They are a fiddly beast.
Their "shoulder vise screw" is excellent for shoulder vises and wagon vises.
Another option for a tail vise is Pony's woodworking vise w/ dog in the tail position. It's like $35 at most retailers. Menards and others carry it.
Slightly more expensive, but likely to last longer/be more robust, is a traditional quick release vise. Grizzly makes one for like $80.
I've built two benches with the Pony style vise as the tail vise. Just keep it close to the edge and line up the pop-up dog w/ your dog hole strip and you're golden.
