This is the updated version of what I have but I'm not sure why it jumped in price.

You should look for one that is inexpensive, from an established company like Printrbot, and if possible built it yourself. I don't know about other printers but mine will break on occasion and it's awesome to know exactly what to fix.

The printer also has a great online community that can offer some help for getting started but for the most part I've had to figure stuff out on my own. For this reason feel free to message me problems if you end up getting one because I was stuck on a very simple problem for two days.

I wish I could provide a better link but right now it looks like most models are above $400. Personally I would shop around a lot before choosing your printer.

The 2013 is no longer available, but the new one (better Extruder) is $349

Your best bet is this printer on Amazon $350 and good reviews.

Trust me that this is actually a decent start.

The cheapest 'source yourself' printer I've seen yet is the SmartRap. I'll print all parts myself, but the motors, hotend, electronics, screws, rods and other bits still add up to at LEAST $250.

I would HIGHLY recommend the $350 Printrbot Simple. (http://printrbot.com/shop/printrbot-simple/) It's the one I use and have had a lot of fun with it. It's a kit, so you build it yourself. Took me 4 hours on a Saturday, and my family was floored when I showed it to them, and started printing the next day. You can print up to about 4 inches tall, wide and long. Actually i'm probably going to make an exoskeleton next. This hasn't been done before like the exoskeleton has (although still just prototyping except for a few models) so I thought I'd start with this.
I have also wanted a robot arm forever like this so it's fun as hell to work on!

I'm probably going to get a Printrbot Simple for starters. It'll take some calibration but that's ok. I like the idea of a kit and all that. That's part of the fun with this project anyway, learning as I go.
