Couple of things you need first: A big MemoryStick Pro Duo, or better yet, a MicroSD-to-Memory Stick adapter and a MicroSD card between 32 & 128GB in size ( stay under 128GB to avoid menu lag). Here’s the adapter I used, with a 128GB MicroSD from Walmart:

Then you’ll need to install custom firmware. It’s basically installing a modified version of Sony’s operating system, that allows you to run unsigned or unofficial apps and games on your PSP. The best step-by-step guide for doing so, with download links for what you’ll need, is here:

https://hackinformer.com/PlayStationGuide/PSP/DEVICE_PSP.html

Once you’ve got ample storage and custom firmware, you’ll need emulators. I got most of mine from here although in some cases there are newer/better versions available on the respective product github pages or in the forums:

http://wololo.net/emulators-for-the-psp-ps-vita-the-ultimate-download-list/

http://wololo.net/talk/viewtopic.php?t=44039

Installing emulators is usually as simple as downloading with a PC, and extracting the eboot.pbp file and other included/required files & folders from the downloaded archive and onto the PSP MemoryStick into the correct folder location, usually something like “MS:/PSP/GAME/EMULATOR_NAME/“

However, in addition to the emulators, which function as the game consoles you want to play, you will also need the games themselves, which are collectively called roms. These you will need to place in a “roms” or “games” subfolder in each emulator’s folder. Those you’ll have to hunt down yourself, though; the legality of distributing roms varies by region, and may be against the rules to share here.

Once you get all that lined out, you’ll have to figure out each emulator’s controls, options and menu schemes; these are homebrews, that is, apps made by hobbyists and enthusiasts in their spare time. They often don’t have a unified menu structure or common user interface.

But once you get everything figured out, it will be totally worth it.

Edit: reworded homebrew extraction instructions for clarity(?)

Yep, and grab some cheap memory

Sony Memory Card Shell

64 Gb Micro SD

That said, you can find all sorts of teardown guides

You can also buy the UMD drives for pretty cheap

I have no experience with replacing the UMD drives however and don't know if there could be compatibility issues.

I also have a 1000 model and bought this one from Amazon recently and can confirm it works fine 100%

With a 4 GB sd card anyway

It shouldn't be that hard, all you'll need is a computer and an SD card adapter. Here's a guide https://youtu.be/PKNMP0yWPeA
And the adapter

I think its worth trying an adapter especially if you already have spare micro sd cards already. I have this one and it works well for me. Duo adapter

I also got a couple of these and the one I have tried so far worked fine as well. duo adapter from ebay

So this bad boy?

Edit: In the description, it says it handles up to 64gb, should I look into a different one or will it still work?

I recently found my old PSP 2001 and am running the latest CFW.

I'm using this exact adapter:
https://www.amazon.com/Funturbo-MagicGate-Playstation-Portable-Handycam/dp/B07F68FCHD/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1549954935&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=sony+memory+stick+pro+duo+to+micro+sd&psc=1

Along with a 128GB SanDisk Extreme:
https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-128GB-Extreme-microSD-Adapter/dp/B07FCMKK5X/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1549955208&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=SanDisk+128gb&dpPl=1&dpID=41Ob2mex0pL&ref=plSrch

Both have been working flawlessly for me with about 50GBs of ISOs so far and a handful of PSX games.

The only way I transfer data to it is direct. Power off the PSP completely -> remove adapter -> pull card -> insert in decent quality microSD card reader.

MiniUSB works but it's SO SLOW. About 5MBps versus 35MBps.

Here's one for $6 with free shipping on Amazon Prime. It only takes one micro SD card, but that should be all you need based on your post.

I have this $8 one that uses two micro SD cards, but I haven't come anywhere close to actually needing the second card (I think I've used about 8 GB and have two 64 GB cards in it).

These cards can sometimes be cheaply made and fall apart, but if you're not switching it in and out all the time, that shouldn't really matter much.

Get a memory stick adapter, format it. Then add games.

You could ask a friend to help.

But you want to brave it yourself here are the links needed.

In the order in which they’d be needed.

After its done you can google psp iso/rom and add games to play.

Word of advise though. Only do this if you like messing with technology, and this kind of stuff excites you.

If you need a Memory Stick with more storage and have 30 dollars left over, consider buying this 128 GB Micro SD Card at https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-128GB-microSDXC-Memory-Adapter/dp/B073JYC4XM/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=SD+CARD+128+GB+SANDSIK&qid=1558658866&s=electronics&sr=1-2-spell (Make sure to get it shipped by Amazon and not some other retailer for maximum chance of getting an official and not counterfeit card) along with a Micro SD Card to Memory Stick Duo adaptor like https://www.amazon.com/Funturbo-MagicGate-Playstation-Portable-Handycam/dp/B07F68FCHD/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=PSP+Memory+Stick+Adaptor&qid=1565311107&s=electronics&sr=1-3 to allow it to fit inside the PSP, and be patient while it tests your SD Card. Use h2testw to verify that the SD card is legitimate before using it in the PSP system. Counterfeit cards will show "The media is likely to be defective." on h2testw along with a large amount of bytes next to the word "DATA LOST."
