Wow thanks for the gold!
Clevo laptops are less expensive because they don't spend any(?) money on marketing, that's up their resellers. They manufacture blank (mostly?) brandless units that resellers customize.
Do you mean like an external keyboard? You may want to consider one for your extended programming periods. Maybe a Razer BlackWidow (Amazon Customer Reviews (371) 4.3 out of 5 stars). Or an economic or whatever you already have/prefer.
Since this is going to be your desktop, you may want to consider a stand like this. Better to look straighter ahead rather than down at a laptop for extended periods. And since the Clevo speakers are usually lacking, maybe a pair of these (Amazon customer reviews 4/5). I have them myself, not bad.
I say go mechanical. :)
I have a thermaltake Poseidon Z. It has kailh switches, not cherry switches, but I've had no problems with it in two years.
Other $80 or less mechanical backlit options:

>9 million entry test case sucks.
That's why you do a small test case first, then do the large one once the small tests complete

>/r/Civcraft[12] what Mechanical keyboard should I get? I must have dedicated arrow keys and a number pad.
I have a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Elite Mechanical Stealth Edition Gaming Keyboard, works really well and has arrow keys/number pad. It's also very quiet (for a mechanical keyboard anyway). I play with my brother in the same room and he doesn't have any complaints about it. Also it's not really a gaming keyboard, I use it primarily for programming, it just says gaming in the name. There's also a non-backlist one that's only $90, which is cheap for a mechanical keyboard. I personally really like the backlighting on mine though, and it's individually backlit so if any light breaks I can replace it (had the keyboard for a few months now and they all still work though)

There is the Razer BlackWidow 2014 Stealth Edition Expert Mechanical Gaming Keyboard for people that are "serious gamers that mostly play FPS like Battlefield and Counter Strike, and want good visuals".
