This isn't going to end well.
For starters, America has a history of losing their shit over the dangers of electric vehicles. From the scaremongering surrounding "exploding" hoverboards to small towns banning cheap electric department store scooters , Americans see personal electric vehicles as a safety hazard. The only exceptions are golf carts and HoveRounds. Hell, even most of our golf carts are gas powered.
Americans also see electric bikes as low powered "man toys." There's a reason why most of the discussion surrounding e-bikes in the United States revolves around 3000w mountain bikes and trail rights. Electric mountain bikes are an annoying fad right now specifically because Americans see bicycles as toys and big boy toys are all about MOAR POWA!!!!
But even if you get around the inevitable public crackdown and American offroad motorsports obsession, you'll have to deal with the attitudes of the manufacturers themselves. Most of the new models of bikes have the batteries built directly into the frames. The models that don't do this rely on proprietary batteries that are incompatible with other manufacturer's bikes. It's like every e-bike company wants to make the iPhone of e-bikes by locking you into their ecosystem of hardware. The end result is that the bikes become obsolete in just a few years time.
This is all kind of a shame because I can see e-bikes as a way to significantly reduce our consumption of foreign oil. The time is right for e-bikes, but the cultural climate, both inside and outside of the industry, just isn't right for e-bikes to be anything but a sideshow attraction in the United States.
