My closet looks something like [this] (http://www.vissbiz.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Amazing-Elfa-Closet-System.jpg). Clearly this one is significantly better organized than mine (and also larger) but I've found the elfa system to be quite good at the price point. I put mine together for ~$900 with the nice wood veneered shelves, as opposed to wire ones.
I decided against going for the significantly cheaper Rubbermaid version which appeared to be a good, less expensive alternative.
man i have a s-load of clothes compared to most of you it seems. my wife would love if i got rid of a lot of it. i just bought this rubbermaid closet for $89 last week and will be installing it this weekend. can't believe how fast the price went up.
A bit more on the expensive side, but I just installed this Rubbermaid adjustable unit in my girlfriend's condo and its working fantastic so far: http://www.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-Configurations-Organizer-Titanium-FG3H89DWTITNM/dp/B0009WG328/ref=sr_1_1?s=storageorganization&ie=UTF8&qid=1426173384&sr=1-1
I want to build this,

Bought a tracksaw, router with a attachement for the track. Tons more wood working tools. Just havn't got around to building it.
Right now we have 4 sets of these

And use two Ikea dressers.
I didn't want any dressers in our bedroom so we made the closet big enough to hold them.
There are a lot of things like that, and they vary a lot in terms of price and visual style: closet organizer, closet shelving system, closet kit, shelf cube storage... Hopefully one of those is along the lines of what you were looking for.
This is what I bought: https://smile.amazon.com/Rubbermaid-Configurations-8-Foot-Organizer-Titanium/dp/B0009WG328/ref=pd_bxgy_201_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0009WG328&pd_rd_r=D9XRQZHZ4YH585K49YXD&pd_rd_w=j5pLN&pd_rd_wg=eDuvr&refRID=D9XRQZHZ4YH585K49YXD&th=1
It's attached to the wall though, not freestanding. You should be able to find free standing systems as well.
Cube organizers/shelves can be nice ways to add storage as well: https://smile.amazon.com/ClosetMaid-Cubeicals-Organizer-6-Cube-White/dp/B002IT6E9C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1500490832&sr=8-2&keywords=storage+cube+organizer
