I want to get a gun safe for my small apartment, but I don't want to break the bank. How "bad" is it to get one of the cabinet-like safes?

I have a Mosin, 10/22, and 3 pistols. Soon I'll probably also have an AK and a shotgun of some kind.

Something like this, while not the ideal in terms of protection, may help to appease your mother.

Why the 590A1 over the 500? I have one, and honestly, I wish I'd just gotten the 500 and saved the money. The 590A1 is heavier, and you can get a combo deal for a good price (example: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/37_336/products_id/46905).

You definitely want to lock your gun up. I see the shotlock sells on their website for $169 - I got this: (http://www.amazon.com/SentrySafe-G0135-Black-Maximum-Capacity/dp/B000Z8P1J2/) on sale at walmart for $163 - it's $179 at the moment, just a thought.

There is some debate about the best rounds to use for a shotgun in a home defense setting- there are two factors at odds - the ability of the projectile(s) to stop a threat, and the tendency of the projectile(s) to penetrate walls in your house and put family/neighbors at risk. The fact of the matter is that the two go together. I have 00 buck, in RIO Low Recoil 00 buck. Federal Low-Recoil is highly recommended I believe.
