Yeah, the reason I recommended a paring knife was the price point. Most people looking to buy a first knife aren't going to spend $250+.

I can do most anything I ever need with those 2 knives. I don't really like using chef's knives for smaller things paring knives are good for anyway, but yeah, I can see why you'd say a santoku would be less versatile.
