everyone is different, but i really don't think it's a necessary part of the process. i've been doing it regularly for 2 years, often several hours a week, and it only hurt once - a month or two in, i tried to imitate oli sykes, and it hurt RIGHT AWAY haha.

there have also been one or two times where my mouth/jaw placement was wonky and i like, pulled a muscle in my neck lol. stopped right away to be safe and the discomfort disappeared in a few minutes.

i'm talking about pain, though. i have experienced a sort of raw-feeling discomfort or irritation; this happens when i go for too long without being hydrated enough. if you're talking about that, i think it's normal but something you should avoid; like, at least take a break and drink a bunch of water (preferably room temp) and if it doesn't feel better when you start again, probably end your practice session. i really recommend this throat lubricating spray, not as something to rely on instead of hydration but it can help in addition.

i obviously don't mean to discourage you at all - i know that pain does happen to a lot of people at first and with practice they get it. and i mean, i'm sure it also happens to a experienced people trying new techniques. i'm just saying that with proper technique, there won't be pain at all, and therefore it isn't something you should expect or push through. an analogy is weighted exercises: i just started working out and sometimes i'll be doing an exercise and ask e.g. "am i supposed to feel this in my lower back?" (thinking maybe i'm so out of shape that the exercise is working that too even if that isn't the main point of it) and a trainer will be like, "not at all, stop what you're doing and try it this way." this happens with a lot of shit but i know i'll get better with practice. you're gonna kill it, just keep going!!
