I'm dispensing my advice from this being year seven, and from the angle of being a worker/support and manning a booth (go /r/dcdarknet) . Makes for a lot of walking and a lot of time staying put at a booth. (Note, I add and update this every year, and then save it because the question will always be asked again).

Fluids (if any tl:dr -- keep fluids up at all cost)

  • Water flask - Go and get a durable bottle that you'll use the whole weekend to refill. I have a couple of these water flasks You are going to want to drink the water down, and refill this when you can. I've found a lot of times there are water coolers, but the cups ran out. This flask tucks nicely into a bag or large pocket. Doesn't seem to leak or puncture.
  • Water additives - Go get something to add to your water for electolytes. Yes, you'll lose more than just water. Pack a small batch of something like these NUUN tablets and mix them into that water flask. Bonus, retain the little tube they came in to store lockpicks or whatever other little itmes you might accumulate.
  • Caffeine - you should do caffeine as the water additives. A lot of the "caffeine delivery systems" you will encounter will also dehydrate you. See the section on vitamins and drugs. There is also little refrigeration, so you'll just be drinking warm Mountain Dew. Get some caffeine with your meal if you need to.
  • Alcohol - you can use one of those water flasks to carry some booze. But one flask must be water at all times. I generally have two flasks on me, one of water, one of moonshine, etc. Minibottles are great too, you can get them at home and pack them into toiletries.

Note: I've stopped drinking for the duration of the con, since it is easy to get into a bad spot, dehydrated, and I've got contests depending on my help (plus you get to see more cool things). Just my stance after six years, and probably why the goons don't drink on the job: not that they can't, just that they are responsible. If not responsible for anything, hell, you're in Sin City, do what you want.

"The best things I put in my mouth all weekend of DEFCON":

These natural throat losenges are great. I gave out all that I had to the good people working booths, and got the quoted reaction. It helps for just socializing an talking for hours and hours in the desert, and getting your voice back.

  • Protein - it's just natural energy. Get some protein bars, eat one each morning. Beef jerky works out well too. A lot of people crowd breakfast places, when you should be lining up for awesome things instead. You should also match this with water/electrolytes. It'll fuel you for the day.
  • Sugar - yeah, don't really load up on this. You'll just crash at the most inconvenient time. This ties into the sodas/caffeine thing.
  • Chips and General Snacks - sure, find these somewhere if you have to. Best place is offsite, head towards the Tuscany, and there's a 7Eleven over there. Or do a run with people to Wal-Mart or something. If you're doing that, get PB&J ingredients.

  • Multivitamins - Get some multivitamins, and start taking them now or in the month leading up to DEFCON. I generally get StressTabs Energy and take them to keep me on my game. Combats hangovers well.
  • Vitamin D - this also rocks, and most of us won't see the sun for a few days anyways.
  • Hangover additives - again, back to that water flask. Use some sort of tablets like these I like tablets, because then you'll drink water. Just packing tylenol/asprin will generally get you to take a swallow of water with the pill, when you really should get a full flask of fluids, or more.
  • Anti-diarrhea drugs. I know there is the fun of Shittercon, but you eat some bad party food or share a flask with someone that has some bug, you'll rather have the anti-diarrhea drugs than become a Shittercon VIP. Plus, diarrhea dehydrates you in the desert.

  • Ethernet cable - you'll at least want to try to be on wired vs wireless. Plus, you can connect into LAN Taps, etc., should anything like that arise among your buddies.
  • Laptop? - My thoughts, bring something. I've had years where I didn't use it. But having the ability to look something up, examine a forensics challenge, is useful.
  • Thumbdrives - useful for a LiveCD boot, and also useful if you need to take files that are being distributed. Copy off a new distro or a tool that is released. Again, be safe with taking files from strangers.
  • Battery charger - small and large works for me. These are also handy for providing a charge to any pis, badges, or random devices you might use.
  • Batteries - you'll have electronic badges, and the batteries provided might suck. Bring some good and fresh ones. The few spots that sell them charge an outrageous amount. I'm talking AAAs, AAs, CR2032s.
  • Solder gear - bring a soldering iron if you can. You're dealing with a lot of the cheapest irons being used by people with varying degrees of skill. The tips can get kinda janky too. Using a bad tip that is about the shape of a pencil ERASER is gonna be a frustrating time for you.
  • Solder gear pt 2 - If not bringing an iron, bring support items. Bring better solder. Bring better solder wick, solder sucker, desolder braid, flux. Also bring a flush cutter to cut the wires. That small list of stuff is invaluable and can fit in a ziplock bag. HHV generally provides cheap irons with bad tips and the lowest-grade solder. (No fault to them, they're setting it up free, and the tips simply get bad from heavy use).
  • I've never done a throwaway or burner phone. Lock down / harden your phone and back it up / take an image before you go, and restore from it after. If anyone wanted to target you bad, you're going to have a bad time regardless of what phone you have, but there are probably softer targets anyways. And make friends, don't give people a reason to come after you and your phone should be fine.

  • Footwear - bring two sets of con footwear. I have super-comfy things, but I use two, because sometimes your feet just need to be in something different.
  • Bags - don't be a damn turtle. I usually either carry what I need in my Utilikilt, or use a small slingbag such as the Bag of Holding and you can add to any bag a Grid-It system , as this 8x12 fits well. Helps keep smaller things organized, and I also use it to organize charging cables, with the battery at the bottom, and the device able to connect up top.
  • Bags (2017 Addition) - This BUBM organizer / bag is outstanding, and I keep this in my bag now instead of (or sometimes in addition to) the Grid-It.

    Prepare Thyself

  • Start drinking your water now or in the month leading up to DEFCON, just to get the habit up. I scripted a box that pops up at my work computer every hour to have me finish my water and refill.
  • Start doing drugs. I mean, the multivitamins referenced above, and vitamin D.
  • If you want to brush up on first aid, or even Wilderness First Aid (for when aid might be a bit distant, which kind of happens in the craziness of the con), and have the means to do so, please do. It'll help us and your fellow con goer.

    Some last notes:

  • This is not to scare you out of the horrors of the con. It is not that bad, just Be Prepared is all that.
  • If you're having a shit time and can find me (I will make myself identifiable as Belouve), I'll help you out. Goons are also good people too.
  • If Official Defcon peeps like /u/DTangent or /u/1o57 or the mods want to pin or use my tips somewhere, feel free to do so. I might copy this to my GitHub so I can reference, update, and copy/paste this easier.

I posted this in another thread but hope it helps you:

I had my hemithyroidectomy done 2 weeks ago and had never been under general anesthesia before so was also concerned. Pre-op, they gave me a gown, robe, skid-proof socks to wear, put in my IV. I was able to put my curly hair up in a top knot with a silk scrunchie (no metal) so it didn't tangle (listen its the small stuff!). I was walked to the OR (it's not like on TV!), give a hair net to put on, greeted all the surgical staff and then laid myself down on the table (again - SO WEIRD!). The anesthesiologist gave me an IV "cocktail" which felt like I had one too many drinks and then I was out. I came to when I was wheeled into recovery and complained about being woken from a REALLY good sleep ;)

The surgery itself was not nearly as bad as I thought it to be (and you read a lot of the negative experiences here). My voice is fine, my parathyroids are fine and I feel so much better than I did before. As someone else stated, the sore throat is 100% the worst bit of all of it. I didn't have to stay overnight but I only had my right side removed but I wasn't sure if I would go home so things I recommend:

- Have some good numbing cough lozenges (I had Cepacol: or throat spray ( and keep chewing ice, it'll help.

- Do not be afraid to ask for the good drugs from the nurse - it'll help to sleep a lot of the time.

- Wear comfy clothes. I was able to dress myself and lift my arms up to put things on (but they were super easy stretchy & loose clothes) but my sister had to help tie my laces as bending down wasn't as easy.

- Get some PJs that button down:

- Comfy slippers/skid-proof socks:

- Comfy pillow to prop yourself up for the first few days - its easier to sleep sitting up higher as there's less pressure on your neck. I could sleep lying flat and on my side after 4-5 days.

- An ice pack that can stay strapped around your neck. I wrapped mine in a pillowcase first then used a velcro hair band to keep it in place. I got this from Amazon (so it can be used cold or hot):

- Silicone scar sheets for post-op (I can use them in about 4-5 weeks post-op):

- If you're a woman, I got these front close bras so I wouldn't have to lift my arms:

- A good thick lip balm. I like this one from Laniege but honestly anything you like will do:

- I took my Vicodin, Stool Softener (yeeeep it can cause constipation) with 1 Aleve (it's not acetaminophen) for the 1st 5 days at night only to ease my sleep but I didn't need pain meds after that.

Outside of sleeping a lot (recovering from surgery will do that), I was back to eating well chewed solids on the 3rd day post-surgery but that will all be on personal preference. You won't be able to shower for at least 48 hours so make sure to do that morning of if you can.

Most of all - good luck! You will be OK and the relief from having it out will be well worth it. I haven't had my bloodwork done yet to determine whether or not I will need medication (I know you will since its a TT) but that'll be the tricky part from what I've read. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions!

u/LowKeyPocketMonster · 1 pointr/singing

I don't hear anything wrong. :-). Sounds normal for everyone our age and it ^sounds like you need to warm up your regular singing voice more so it wouldn't do that popping stuff in the second clip. You need to put some energy in it the same way you'd sing a song in the voice you want to sing to someone! It sounds too low volume! Maybe a little louder and open throat would help but a falsetto really needs to be controlled. Try do a character voice like mickey mouse to find it. Notice how mickey mouse sounds all energetic and happy? It shouldn't hurt either. A girlfriend wouldn't want to hear low energy singing because she wouldn't be persuaded you really mean what you're singing to her. I ^think you should upload a clip of you talking regularly or anything speech-like then everyone here can help you better! falsetto is typically difficult to control at first since guys typically don't like using that sound since it takes away their masculinity. So you have keep using it to get stronger. If we know how you sound regularly and it doesn't sounds like there's a problem, you're probably fine but it's always okay to check with a doctor just to be sure.
> Record yourself speaking softly like you're talking to a baby
> Record yourself speaking like you're totally confident in front of a classroom.
> Record yourself saying "HEY!" like your friend is across the street and you're trying to catch their attention.
^And I wouldn't classify as anything right now since baritones are more than capable of singing anything a tenor does. Although, it may take more work to train to be like a mighty tenor. It doesn't really matter what voice type you are unless you want to do a musical or take some operatic role. Take Tom Jones, John Legend, Elvis Presley for example. They're baritones but are more than capable (and maybe even better but that's debatable) of reaching the standard notes of tenor pop songs. I feel that range only classifies a vocal part mainly for choirs because they need to have more people fill in certain parts but there's a lack of it-- so if you can't sing that high note, they'll put you into bass section even though you're probably a tenor. for acid reflux/gerd you should take a lozenge like Thayers Slippery Elm, though drinking peppermint tea would most likely help. :-)

I personally took 360mg. I'm pretty slim though (125lbs, 5'10"). It was a pretty intense experience.

That said, this was my first ever trip. I would not recommend just taking my advice. Maybe create a topic here about it? I'm sure there are people willing to help you out :)

Have fun and be careful! DXM proved to be incredibly intense and is not something to mess around with :p

I DO however recommend this as a source for DXM. This is 30mg of DXM per pill. I took 360mg so that's 12 pills. I was told for my size, an intense trip would be 360mg, so I decided to do that (it was worth it). My friend who is larger takes 480mg for an intense trip. Seems like an intense trip would be around that range.

Dan Savage says on his podcast to “fuck first.” Definitely wise advice but we are being really specific with our timing, so it made sense to have dinner first...tonight we will keep it much lighter!

Make sure you get the tablets with guaifenesin only. I got the extended release (12 hour) version. I’ve been taking them twice a day, but once a day will have an impact as well. I started taking them a couple of days before my expected O and I will continue through O day (today) and the day after. I noticed a difference in CM texture pretty much immediately! I bought them on Amazon (link) but there are generic versions as well. Best of luck this cycle!!

Mucinex makes mucus looser so your coughs are more productive and is a class B. Benadryl is the active ingredient for a lot of those "non habit forming sleep aids" and is also class B and stronger than Claratin at making me sleepy.

On the non-medicine front, honey is a good cough supressant. A big spoonful of honey in chamomile, ginger, or other decaf tea before bed is great. If it's too warm outside for hot tea you can just eat the honey on toast or off a spoon.

Zarbees also makes a good hot drink mix that my doc ok'd for pregnancy (though I wouldn't use their sleep one with melatonin, apparently that's not ok, which sucks because melatonin is such a good sleep aid).

So I did some research into what inactive additives specifically cause nausea/diarrhea, and I have found the culprit. Sorbitol, which is a sugar-alcohol sweetener substitute, is apparently the main cause of most users significant nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It supposedly has a very strong laxative effect. I've been reading that they didn't use to put it in syrups or gels, but unfortunately they put it in almost all of them now, not including polistirex varieties. If not sorbitol, they often use sucralose, which seems to have similar undesirable effects. I can't help but feel like this is intentional, to make recreational dosing less pleasant.

Fortunately, I did some digging and found the holy grail of syrups on Amazon, although in somewhat lesser concentration, meaning you would have to take more. I feel like that wouldn't be as bad as the nasty stomach complications, like with every other HBr+ source I've found. Not sure if you would be able to find this anywhere in any stores. I've certainly never seen such a good catch.

As for the gel-caps, possibly, but not by a large margin compared to a syrup. The outer coatings dissolve relatively quick, but if you take them incrementally rather than all at once, it will be like re-dosing, so your peak will hit you in waves, and increase in DXM toxicity. Personally, I cannot down enough for a recreational dose very quick, so I used to poke them with a thumbtack, express them with pliers, and mix it in some really masking beverage, since it tastes just god awful. You could also dissolve the coatings in ginger ale, to reduce waste, but I never bothered.

Honestly, you either put up with gel-caps and the sorbitol pains, or you can try that syrup without any of that crap, and hope the syrupy weight doesn't bother you. I would figure I should handle the fullness much better than a stomach irritant/laxative, on my come up.

I'd say your best bet for easy on the stomach, and for good DXO potential, is through an extraction of some sort, preferably the Agent Lemon: Dual-Phase Acid-Base Extraction of DXM.

u/Chriss1241 · 2 pointsr/daddit

Same thing happened here. 1 week into daycare got a cold, which then turned into an ear infection.

Anyway, we got the Nosefrida which is 100% better then a bulb syringe (and 100% more disgusting, but it pulls out so much more snot). Just put some saline drops in before to loosen everything up.

Also, as per a recommendation of a friend, we rubbed Vicks BabyRub on her feet before bed, put some socks on, and the coughing definitely decreased at night. We asked our ped. before we did, and though she never heard of doing it, she didn't see a problem with it. Just make sure it is the Vicks BABYRUB, it is safe for 3 months+ in age.

u/maywest44 · 2 pointsr/DarkNetMarkets

Dextromethorphan Hbr (aka your good old Robotripping). I prefer the cough gels. Of ALL the psychedelics and dissociatives I've tried, this legal substance available at every corner drug store has produced some of the most spectacular trips I've ever had (I'm talking doses around 975mg - only recommended for experienced users).

Be advised it comes in basically 2 forms: DXM Hbr (Hydrobromide) or DXM Polistirex. The mail difference is with the Polistirex the mantra is "half as strong/twice as long". So it depends on what you're going for - If you're looking for a strong psychedelic experience the obvious choice is the Hbr version. The Poli would be more suitable if you just wanted a really nice body buzz and cool headspace and be able to function all day.

And yea, no worries on a drug test for 2 reasons: 1) They don't test for it in the first place, and 2) it's LEGAL so even if it did show up on a drug test just tell em you had a fucking cold or something - lol

Edit: If that peaks your interest then here ya go:

u/vanderpyyy · 2 pointsr/Drugs

At the very least, try to get your hands on some gabapentin or its brother phenibut. Your doctor probably won't have problems prescribing gabapentin. They're like benzo-lite and great for preventing seizures and GABA downregulation related withdrawal symptoms. With benzodiazepines tapering slowly is really the best option. It has the harshest withdrawal symptoms when stopped cold-turkey. Valium or Klonopin for slow withdrawal.

DXM helps with dopamine downregulation related withdrawal symptoms and NMDA antagonism for general pain. Kratom to help with serotonin downregulation and black hole depression.

Take magnesium supplements, because amphetamines are known to deplete magnesium and most people are deficient anyway. Magnesium helps with anxiety, pain through NMDA neuromodulation.

Propranolol for adrenergic symptoms like sweating, heart rate, blood pressure etc.

Buspirone, a very light weight anti-anxiety drug can help because it is a serotonin 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist. 5-HT1A is responsible for modulating all other serotonin receptors and has been shown to increase dopamine as well. 5-HT1A desensitization is linked to increased serotonin from all sources and is believe to be the mechanism behind SSRIs and why they take weeks to work (time to desensitize the 5-HT1A receptor). The autoreceptors must first densensitize before the concentration of extracellular serotonin in the synapse can become elevated.

Finally, outdoor exercise.

Their isn't a central registry for DXM purchases in TX, as far as I can tell, states even like CA that require an age to purchase (TX isn't actually one, it's just this guy's store policy) still don't have a central registry for one.

Anonymity helps this lady not one little bit, as it isn't illegal to purchase huge amounts of DXM.

Here's a helpful amazon link to buy it at $21 per 1.8g of DXM

u/pricklycats · 1 pointr/dxm

Honestly the only place I can think of that sells 30mg/pill gel caps would be dollar stores like Dollar General, Dollar Tree, etc. You can get almost 300mg DXM for a couple dollars. There's also this very good deal on Amazon, 3 packs of 20 gel caps for $10. Or you can find a DXM powder vendor online and make your own capsules of DXM. Hope that helps somewhat.

Jesus Christ...had your parents never heard of "a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down"? 'Cause I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

If it helps, I use this stuff. It tastes great (and nothing like traditional cough syrup), and I just stir a tablespoon into a mug of water and drink it down.

u/FaKeShAdOw · 17 pointsr/sex

There is this minty/sweet/fruity dark syrup that lots of Asian American families give to their kids when a sore throat arises. It's usually called Loquat Syrup, or Pi pa gao/Pei Pa Koa.

It tastes like delicious nostalgia and childhood stuff for some of my Chinese friends so they like to sip a spoonful to nuke chronic morning sore throat ASAP. Some sip a full tablespoonful undiluted because they like how thick it is, or you can dilute it a bit in a cup.

Second possible solution: my mother used to boil/stew giant yellow pears for a little while and put in those chunky crystals of sugar with them. I would drink this slightly sweet pear soup and carve hot fruit flesh out with a spoon. Ate the skin and all because it was entirely soft. Ate it because I had strep throat; was happy about it being a fruity dessert/snack.

u/Peter_Parkingmeter · 2 pointsr/ChronicPain

Pregabalin/Lyrica and gabapentin are awesome. I prefer gabapentin, because pregabalin makes me feel too "domed" for daily use, and I got too tolerant and dependant.

So far, I've tried every gabapentinoid except Fluoro-phenibut. Out of all the gabapentinoids, gabapentin is probably my favourite, phenibut is probably my second favourite, and pregabalin is my third favourite.

I absolutely love all of them. It's too bad I can't use pregabalin more. I still have 50mg left from my old script, but I'm saving it for a really special occasion.

Tramadol is also an SNRI, but also a quite weak opioid. I wonder why it stopped working well.

You might be interested in NMDA antagonists like dextromethorphan/dextrorphan, or ketamine. They're pretty much the most effective neuropathic pain treatments.

EDIT: Since we're on the topic, DXM is also a weak SNRI, which you may like. DXM is mostly just an SNRI with a few other weak properties, but most of its effects come from its metabolite, Dextrorphan/DXO, which is an NMDA antagonist, SNRI, etc. I recommend trying DXM, it's insanely cheap and you can legally order it to your house

Amitriptyline is a TCA, but "TCA" is a chemical-therapeutic classification (its chemical structure is tricyclic, and its therapeutic goal is primarily as an antidepressant).

SNRI is a method of action (the pharmacological way the drug works).

There are 4 classification types for drugs, and mixes of them (such as the previously mentioned "chemical-therapeutic" class).

  • Chemical

This classification groups drugs by their chemical properties, such as "steroid" or "tricyclic"

  • Mechanism of action

This classification groups drugs by their pharmacological action, such as "dopaminergic", "Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor", and "COx Inhibitor"

  • Mode of action

This classification groups drugs by the anatomical/functional changes they induce, such as "bronchodilator", "antifungal", etc.

  • Therapeutic class

This classification groups drugs by their therapeutic goal(s), such as "analgesic", "sedative", "antidepressant", and "antiepileptic"

Here is what I take, I would certainly recommend them, and if it's your first time you must do an allergy test! This involves taking a small dose beforehand to make sure you don't have a rare dangerous enzyme deficiency. After you perform that safety test, I would recommend 200-250mg combined with a ton of Cannabis. Each bottle has 300mg total.

>all of which any child can buy no questions asked.

In many states, you have to be 18 to buy cough syrup w/ DXM or any pseudoephedrine. And in certain states, you cannot buy more than x-amount of pseudoephedrine per month without a red flag going off^+. The other products, yes; but the sale of cough/cold medicine is typically watched closely just for this reason (and so that meth-heads can't buy tons of the stuff at a time). And I feel like if a ten-year-old went into NAPA and bought a bunch of ether (or even spray paint, for that matter), some questions would be asked.

^+ Edit: I was curious so I did a little research. Turns out pseudoephedrine is strictly regulated by the FDA and must be sold 'behind-the-counter' always (except for those tiny little 2-tablet pouches they sell at gas stations). Sales must also be recorded to prevent someone from buying tons of the stuff at a time. AFAIK, DXM is largely unregulated
, though most of the popular stores (Safeway, Walgreens, Kroger), from my experience, require ID for any sort of cough/cold medicine purchase, regardless of its drug content.

*Edit2: But you can buy DXM off of fucking Amazon. So, yea, I feel your point still stands.

menthol inhalers are a popular thing to have too or some of these differaction glasses to pass out and share with the people around you

if you have Snapchat or instagram, thats a fun thing to swap with people you meet. its fun to see the people apart of rave culture's "normal" lives.

u/VisionLSX · 3 pointsr/MDMA

Inhalers refer to well 'inhaled' medicine or whatever. In this case Vicks or other brand inhalers work. Specially if they have menthol or other strong scent. Put in your nostril and inhale. Similar to Poppers if you know about those

Balm, Rubs, Ointments, Lotions are all synonyms sort of? Kinda the same thing. You can just put a bit under your nostrils/upper lip and get similar effects. Hope it helps

u/HojoExperiment · 2 pointsr/AskDocs

Try using the neilmed sinus rinse. It will help flush out the sinuses and can prep your nose for use of an inhaled medication like fluticasone (Flonase). Guaifenesin can help make mucous more runny, but you need to be hydrated for it to work. When people are really sick in the hospital, I sometimes give them a vibratory PEP therapy device like this one to help break up thick mucous.

As you said, smoking will make things worse. I recommend checking out the handout provided by the AAFP for good tips on quitting.

u/strangewoops · 2 pointsr/emetophobia

Eating a little something, at least some crackers, if not soup, will probably make you feel better! I always love the Umcka cold care when I have a sore throat, and ginger tea.

u/thirdjane · 1 pointr/beyondthebump

Check out Vicks Baby Rub it works almost as well as regular vicks rub, but doesn't have the camphor and menthol that vicks has. In the baby rub it's mostly just petroleum jelly and eucalyptus oil with a couple other essential oils. Much safer. They say 3 months and older, but my pedi said it was safe to use on my six-week-old when he was congested. (I went the on-the-feet under-the-socks route.)

Amazon sells gelcaps at a good price

If you don't want to down 20 or 60 gelcaps or have the shits, maybe robocough is for you. Its a 5 hour energy drink size bottle of 450mg of dxm hbr (they take paypal, you cannot buy directly from them on amazon anymore)

edit: if you meant like going to the store and buying them, cvs and walgreens have gelcaps. Syrups with only dxm hbr are pretty much impossible to find now. If you are insistent on it being a syrup, you could always try the agent lemon extraction.

u/pick_me_apart · 1 pointr/dxm

Look for these in a store, or you can buy straight from Amazon.

Usually the medicines (both syrups and gels) in a green box having guaif and the ones in a blue box don't.

You might need to check a few stores. CVS is usually pretty good about stocking them.

u/bunabhucan · 8 pointsr/NoStupidQuestions

The strict answer to your question involves probability.

There is a so-small-it's-silly probability that (even assuming mixing) no original water remains after 2 days. The probability is that each original molecule of water ends up in the drain, two days in a row. For 1L it's like tossing a coin 3x10^70 times and getting nothing but heads. That number is too small to be tangible.

At the same time there is a so-much-smaller-it-makes-the-first-probability-look-humongous chance that exactly half remains after 1000 days. (3x10^35000 tosses of heads in a row.)

The inflection point, where the probability of any of the original molecules remaining starts to be improbable happens after about 85 days of tossing half and refilling.

You can purchase a product that claims to reduce flu symptoms that consists of duck liver mashed and then diluted by a factor of 100 to 1, 200 times in a row. To apply to your example this is closer to simply emptying the glass and refilling it (figure the water clinging to the inside is one hundredth of the total) and repeating 200 times. The chance of an original molecule remaining becomes improbable after 18 rinses.

I believe the Robafen Cough Gels are the best bang for your buck on Amazon. Also, I've heard Dollar Tree's website sells cough gels for $1 per bottle, but I'm not gonna link it. It should be easy enough to find on Google.

u/Hazardous_Ed · 1 pointr/answers

My doctor prescribed this and it worked well. Here's it's known as the best cough medicine

u/Zarathustra124 · 2 pointsr/funny

Robitussin is the common brand name, but they also make varieties mixed with with other drugs now, you need to look at the ingredients and make sure what you're getting is nothing but Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide (DXM hBr). DXM Polistirex is also valid, though worse for the inexperienced; it's an extended-release variety that causes a weaker high for 3x as long (commonly sold as Delsym).

Robafen is a generic brand commonly available online. It's DXM hBr in gel capsules, which are way easier to swallow by the bottle than cough syrup. Buying it is legal in most places, including America.

As with any drug, do some research first. DXM has a reputation as a legal alternative to "real" drugs, but it's a serious high, not to be taken lightly. Erowid is the best place to start.

u/amblergler · 6 pointsr/TryingForABaby

The most important thing with the Mucinex is to get the kind that’s ONLY guaifenesin (i.e.: without a decongestant). Here’s a link to the one I take: Mucinex 600mg Extended Release Tablets

DOSE: 1 tablet 1-2x/day, (12hrs apart if 2x).
Keep in mind, all the studies involving guaifenesin have been with 600mg 1x/day so that should be sufficient.

WHEN: I start at the beginning of my predicted FW (I use the Flo app to predict), usually CD 7/8 for me, and continue until the end of my FW (2 days past ovulation).

TI: Every other day at beginning of FW until 4 days before predicted ovulation then every day until FW is over.

NOTE: I wasn’t kidding about giving it to my partner too. He takes it 1x/day on the same days as me. Some studies show improvement to sperm motility for men taking guaifenesin soooooo why not lol.

It's hit or miss for me. I'm 18 and they usually just ask if I'm 18 and I say yeah and end of story. Sometimes tho usually if they're older they'll say "i need to see ID sir" especially if I buy the entire stock of dxm. Honestly I'd just try and buy it and if they ask for ID just say you forgot your wallet or something. You could also buy some on amazon and ship it to a amazon locker.(no ID needed and it's automatic so there isn't someone who hands you your package.)That's how I did it when I was 16,17 Robafen Cough Liquidgels Dextromethorphan HBr, USP 15mg, 20 Liquidgels (3 Packs)

Order on Amazon if you can (ship to a friend's house?) These have been good to me. Small & easy to swallow (like nothing if you squeeze the 'pill juice' into a cup and down w/ soda), and 300mg DXM per bottle. I'd say take 150 -250 or so mg for your first time.

Also, drinking the stuff just feels awful. Some people are good with it, but personally I can't stand the taste when I can just down some pills.

Here are sixty-eight. Here's a review of the whole field. Even if I don't list individual preparations, can you find a single source for a homeopathic remedy being pulled from the shelves for inefficacy? I can't. The closest I can find is when the remedy turns out to not be as homeopathic as claimed. But even if that were happening, would that be a good thing, really, when it's replaced with other similarly-impossible homeopathic preparations?

Furthermore, at a certain point, absence of evidence is evidence of absence. It's been over two hundred years, and not a single homeopathic remedy has ever been demonstrated to work beyond a placebo, and it's not like we haven't been trying.

But if you really care about specific claims:

Amway claims that, if you join Amway, you can be rich! Except they are a pyramid scheme, or close enough -- the average Amway distributor makes $1400/year. They are still in business -- that Dateline article was in 2004, and Amway is still doing quite well. This is hardly the only running scam like this, and ought to be enough to disprove your original contention.

Back in Homeopathy, there's Oscillococcinum, which has again and again... not been shown to work. There have even been class action lawsuits -- plural -- over the fact that it was labeled as having the ability to cure the flu, and does not. But it's also in stock now, get it by Tuesday if you like.

Ultimately, I think this is shifting the burden. The burden should not be on the skeptic to show that a remedy doesn't work -- after all, all the homeopath needs do at that point is keep selling the same sugar pills and claim they came from a different plant that I haven't proven false yet. The burden should be on the person trying to sell something as "medicine" to prove that it actually treats something better than a placebo. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to sell them, but I think it's reasonable to have a separate section of the store for wholly-unproven remedies.

u/juzzztcurious · 1 pointr/dxm

CVS has generic brand gel caps , 300 mg in total for around $5

Most grocery stores (Vons, Albertsons, etc.) also have a "signature brand" bottle of syrup with around 354 mg in them, for also around $5-6

Delsym ( my personal favorite, but it's DXM polystirex which is the extended release form, not DXM hbr which is what most people are looking for) and other extended release offbrands also only have DXM polystirex as their only main ingredient. it's pricier though.

also here's some gel caps on amazon

u/FlipMineArseDad · 1 pointr/dxm

You look new to the sub so I'll assume this is an actual question. Let me explain. The only drug that you're looking for here is DXM Hbr/polistirex. Any other active ingredients that are going to be paired with it are NOT going to get you high and they will always have negative side effects that can really ruin your trip. This particular product also has Guaifenesin in it, which when taken in high enough doses to get a trip from the DXM will absolutely wreck your stomach. You'll be lucky if it doesn't come out of both holes. And I've heard it also causes kidney stones. Just stay away from anything that has any other active ingredients.

Try Robotussin cough gels or Robocough(if you live in the US.) These are both Hbr products.

If you're looking for polistirex try delsym 12 hour

The difference between poli and Hbr is that Hbr is not timed release, which means it's all absorbed ASAP which means strong high. Poli is timed release, which means you get about half of it at ingestion time, and half about 4 hours later. Rule of thumb for poli is "half as strong, twice as long." If you have more questions lmk

u/seventhaccount7 · 1 pointr/dxm

I weigh 170lbs and take four of these (five if I really want to be obliterated). 4 of those = 1200mg which should provide that level of trip for MOST people without a massive tolerance. Usually 1200mgs puts me on my ass for a good 8-10 hours and feels insanely dream like and nostalgic at the same time, it's hard to really explain.

A few tips:

First off, make sure the stuff you have ONLY has DXM as an active ingredient. A lot of the "tussins" come with other stuff in it. Namely "guaifenesin". I made the mistake of not realizing this and got "robo rash" and severe itching. Both can be avoided by making sure the stuff you have ONLY has DXM.

I'd suggest going for the higher end of the first plateau (the calculator I used) for a first trip because a dissociative "high" is very different from alcohol, marijuana or opiods. You'll want to get a feel for it and you'll be sedated for some time, it lasts for hours from onset to peak and back down. Once you get how it feels, aim for a higher plateau. Something that is rarely mentioned is that your libido will be affected the higher the plateau.

Have some good music queued up. Very cool to listen to music while robo-trippin'

Liquid DXM has some alcohol in it. You'll feel it in addition to the effects of the DXM.

Be sure to do it on a nearly empty stomach so you have a "baseline". I've found that a completely empty stomach will prevent any effects. I've always had better luck with just a bit of food (half a sandwich, a few cookies, etc...) in my stomach.

For the future, I recommend these these. Nothing but DXM in a gelcap. No extra sugar, no guaifenesin, just good ol' DXM. No need to choke down that nasty syrup. That cherry aftertaste is quite un-appealing. I stopped having that sick/queasy feeling in my stomach I'd get from drinking the liquid.

Good luck, be careful and please let someone who can get to you physically know that way if shit goes south, you have an out. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Paracetamol: 500mg X600 (Amazon) - $11.91
Dextromethorphan hbr: 15mg X60 (Amazon) - $9.99
Doxylamine succinate: 25mg X192 (Amazon)* - $9.49

Phenylephrine hcl: 10mg X36 ("Blowout Medical") - $2.10
10mg X72 (Rite Aid) - $10.99/$7.69 if you're a "member"

  • 650mg paracetamol is $0.02576 (and 325mg is $0.01288)
  • 30mg dextromethorphan hbr is $0.255**
  • 12.5mg doxylamine succinate is $0.02471
  • 5mg phenylephrine is $0.02917 with the questionable site, or $0.07632 with rite aid.

You can also find other mixes of the ingredients (eg paracetamol/phenylephrine was one I saw) which may be cheaper than buying the ingredients individually.

    * I wrote this post out of order and got tired of transcribing links on my phone. Sorry. I didn't have to search very hard to find any of these, so you probably can too.
** Dextromethorphan is mildly problematic as an ingredient because for some reason you can only get it by itself in Robitussin or similarly expensive medications - so no cheap generics. But if you're willing to take it with something else like guafinisen (an expectorant that causes serious nausea at high doses to prevent abuse of dextromethorphan, but typically no ill, effects when taking therapeutic doses) then you will end up paying much less for that as well. Example:
    400mg guaifenesin, 20mg dextromethorphan hbr X30 Dollar General - $4.50
And if you're willing to order it in bulk from a foreign chemical supplier, then therapeutic doses become laughably cheap. Alibaba, e.g., has 1kg available for $480 (Xi'an Salus Nutra Bio-Tech Inc.), which puts 30mg at $0.01440. For a less insane example, I also see 1g for $1 (Changzhou Confucius Biotechnology Co., LTD.), which puts 30mg at $0.03000.

So we can "homebrew" a dayquil dose for
    $0.01288 (325mg paracetamol) +
    $0.01 (10mg dextromethorphan hbr) +
    $0.02917 (5mg phenylephrine hcl)

    And a nyquil dose for
    $0.02576 (650mg paracetamol) +
    $0.03 (30mg dextromethorphan hbr) +
    $0.02471 (12.5mg doxylamine succinate)

and excepting dextromethorphan we have only used generics/different brands of the medicines that are in NyQuil and DayQuil.

That's a big part of why I think those products are scams. Another slightly more subjective reason is that I think paracetamol and phenylephrine are both useless in most circumstances. I have found that pseudoephedrine is the most effective nasal decongestant by far (though definitely more expensive), and that phenylephrine has little or no effect on symptoms of relevant illnesses.

I would recommend Chloraseptic and menthol for coughs instead of dextromethorphan as well.

It still boggles my mind that people buy shit like NyQuil, Excedrin (literally just caffeine and paracetamol, and we already know how cheap paracetamol is), etc. when the active ingredients can often be bought off the very same shelves
