Some have bbguns for "self defense" or at least make themselves feel more secure. They sure can look like real guns and feel it would scare off would be home invaders (or in this case, have the opposite effect given the story out there).

I have one and I love it. The shape is identical to the real thing. Fits in my holster perfect. The trigger however is nothing like the real gun, it's a long double action trigger. The good news is that (IMHO) a difficult, long trigger is great practice. Press the trigger without disturbing the sights. Over and over again. Lots. You want to disconnect the motion of your trigger finger from any other motion in your hands.
The BB gun will also help you learn to keep your eyes open while shooting. Not blinking when the gun goes off is essential for good pistol marksmanship.
Concentrate with razor sharp focus on the front sight.
Press the trigger while holding the sight picture
When the gun fires, watch the front sight come up out of the notch in recoil (even the BB gun does this to some extent), then watch it settle back down into the proper sight picture again.
You can only shoot as well as you can see.
