Hey guys, (I'm a male btw) I've been on accutane 3 times during my teens, and I still have acne (it comes back), I'm in my 20s now and figured I would try something different. I looked through the spring 2016 megathread and found products matching my skintype.
I purchased the following:
But, I realized, I don't know what I should use in the AM/PM of these. Do I just use them in order for night and day? I don't think I'd use sunscreen at night, but I think I'd be better off asking you guys for help. Thanks!
Tl;dr incoming but I know what you’re going through. God do I ever know.
My skin has always been acne prone but it went haywire on T. I’m talking the usual grease 24/7, painful cystic lumps that never went away and deep scars. I’m about 30 so my skin doesn’t heal as fast as it used to and any marks stay forever. For roughly ten months I tried every combination of name-brand cleanser, moisturizers and benzoyl peroxide product I could get my hands on.
In January I tried a completely new skincare routine and I’ve seen amazing results. I didn’t have a “it gets worse before it gets better” phase with this. It just… got better. It’s pricey to start but it’s honestly been the best thing I’ve put money towards since starting my transition. It’s taken about a month but the acne itself is under control and the scars are slowly fading. I can finally shave without causing huge breakouts all over my cheeks and jawline.
My routine is as follows, morning and night:
Wash with a gentle cleanser. I use Sulwhasoo.
Twice a week I’ll use this lemon peeling gel after cleansing in the morning. I honestly don’t know if it’s really peeling or just the product balling up but it smells nice and makes my skin feel soft.
Moisturize. I use this weird bee/snail cream. Don’t worry, the bee venom is harvested in a way that doesn’t harm the bees.
Before bed I use a sheet mask. These are cheap enough that I use one every night or at least every other night. They’re legit a godsend.
I do have to keep up with it religiously. Even at one year on T, if I start slacking I notice I get itchy lumps under my chin and jaw (the kind that eventually develop into big knots). I haven’t changed my diet at all but I’ve always drank a lot of water and ate leafy greens. It costs a bit of money to get started but if you're like me and you've tried everything else it’s worth a shot.
I have erythematotelangiectatic rosacea with a papule or two every month. My cheeks are covered in permanent telangiectasias, but I don't mind them because I can cover it with makeup easily. I've had them since I was a kid. Occasionally I get a small papule or two
My nose has worsened over the last 5 years. I have no telangiectasias but my whole nose up to the bridge has diffuse erythema. Above the bridge of my nose has some redness too, leaving the bridge of my nose white... The redness goes away if I press on my nose (it blanches - not permanent). It is difficult to keep makeup on my nose throughout the day without it coming off. This is the most annoying thing about rosacea for me.
My forehead has patches of eczema either side that I've had success treating with elidel (pimecrolimus cream) and a better skincare routine. I have rosacea in the middle of my forehead. Easy to cover with makeup.
I've tried metrogel and finacea, both without effect. Finacea just hurts my skin. I'm taking 50mg doxycycline capsules and I thought they were working, but then I forgot for a while. It's difficult to tell. Rosacea is difficult to control, unfortunately.

I currently use the following of an evening:
In the morning I gently wash the set slippery layers off with water and apply:
I take a resveratrol capsule every day to combat sirtuin inhibition caused by niacinamide.
I've been following this routine for four months and my skin has improved a lot in terms of texture. The flaky patches went away and the eczema almost completely disappeared with occasional maintenance use of elidel and just generally looking after my skin. The rosacea erythema has stayed the same, but I have developed fewer papules. Hopefully, if I can remember to take the doxycycline, the redness of my nose may also improve.
