keep in mind when I say stiffer ride, I'm comparing that to the 230,000 mile old OEM springs that would bottom out at 2mph on a speed bump. You could try a set of adjustable shocks like these Ranchos and see if they make a difference. Honestly though the ride with new stock shocks is fine at least for me. The on road performance of these springs is actually really good and it rides smooth and corners quite well on the curvy mountain roads around here.

Another option to look at if you want to add a 2 inch lift to your XJ would be a spacer and shackle lift kit. They utilize your stock springs and shocks while giving you a little more suspension travel and room for larger tires.
