If you're serious about home defense, I'm going to say that you should expect to spend more than $50 on a weaponlight you can actually trust your life to.
I currently run an Inforce APL on my G19 and recommend it. Perfect amount of light output for inside the home (200 lumens), clean beam pattern, mounts solidly, and is nice and compact and lightweight. Normally around $120-130, but you can occasionally find deals for around $100. I would also look at the Streamlight TLR-1 series of lights.
If you are serious about that $50 spending limit, I would recommend that you get a good handheld light instead and learn off-hand light techniques instead of trying to buy the cheapest weaponlight you can. The handheld light I would recommend is the Surefire G2X Tactical (320 lumen, single output, momentary only tailcap). The tan model is currently $49 on Amazon.
What no one in this thread suggested, which is legal for you to carry and is almost as effective as pepper spray, is a tactical flashlight, in order of increasing price: this or this or this
You can also get a cheaper one online, but I recommend quality if you are relying on it for self defense. Make sure it is at least 200 lumens, preferably 300+ if you want to temporarily blind an attacker. You can then use the distraction created by the blinding light to strike them on the head or other bones such as collar bone, and then run away. You could also take the opportunity to kick them in the knee or balls to allow you time to escape. It takes very little skill to use effectively and it isn't seen as a weapon in most places, so you have a good excuse to be carrying it.
Consider a handheld light. [Surefire G2X] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009F7J8RA/ref=sxr_rr_xsim_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=3008523062&pd_rd_wg=FPl4m&pf_rd_r=06YFE27J6281YQVMV34E&pf_rd_s=desktop-rhs-carousels&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B009F7J8RA&pd_rd_w=AsuEV&pf_rd_i=tlr-1&pd_rd_r=P51CDX3E8E62W2GAK0G1&ie=UTF8&qid=1501103880&sr=1) is outstanding for a $60 light.
If you can, take a low-light shooting class. You may find you prefer running a light support hand over handgun mounted.
The Surefire G2X is a great light for a rifle. 320 Lumens

Cool giveaway, good luck everyone! Link
it takes too long to open a pocket knife in any situation like that; if he's bigger, stronger and likely faster than you i doubt you could even get it ready for use before he was on you.
you might want to consider getting a 'tactical flashlight' - a very bright flashlight; bright enough that if you shine it in their eyes it can temporarily blind them. most tactical flashlights are also quite good as strike weapons that you could use while they are still temporarily blinded. I pretty much always have my flashlight in hand when walking at night; it is 'just a flashlight' unless someone decides to start something.
this is the one I carry; http://www.amazon.com/Surefire-Tactical-Single-Output-Flashlight/dp/B009F7J8RA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1452640418&sr=8-1 - there are cheaper ones available but i recommend this one because it is very well made. a lot of the cheaper ones aren't going to hold up as well. i want to be confident that my light will work when i really need it.
How about The Fenix PD32 then, or maybe the SureFire G2X

Not a bad way to go. Pick up a GG&G mount for around $20 to go with it, works fine.
