I have seen CF card to IDE adapters before. You could possibly get one of those in there. Is there anything keeping you from popping one of these open?

hard drive is too big. get a cf card big enough to hold your os and a pata to cf adapter. also, a clarkdale chip will be much better than your cpu choice.
As far as authentic hardware, get an 8088/286 or a 386 with a turbo button. Optionally there are some DOS utilities that purposely slow down the CPU for games that run too fast, such as MoSlo.
A lot of vintage DOS PC enthusiasts still use floppies, but since old hard drives are hard to find and expensive these days it seems like most people are using either Compact Flash-to-IDE adapters or homebrew hardware such as the XT CF Lite. Once you install the OS onto one of these you can just remove the CF card and copy whatever you want to it from a modern PC, then plug it right back in the old PC and be good to go.
I've been trying to archive all my old floppies to disk images because they're finally reaching the point where a lot of them are going bad, especially the 5.25" disks.
Alternatively, get one of these and use a CompactFlash card so you don't deal with any weird SATA issues since Windows 98 predates it by almost 5 years
