Yes, but I'd actually say a good flashlight. Those yellow plastic 6V ones you can get for four dollars at Walmart are a bad idea. Lousy housing, no seals, the batteries are prone to leaking, and they're really dim even if you get an LED one. In the case where you actually need a flashlight (emergency, power outage, whatever) you'll thank yourself when you can actually see with a quality beam instead of some POS one you got at the mini-mart.
I have two D-cell LED Maglites in my apartment, and a Streamlight ProTac next to my bed. They're more expensive (and hard to find in the case of the Streamlight) but they run circles around anything else I've seen in their price range/size. If you're looking for a static light source that's easily transportable, Sylvania makes this that works really well for me. Obviously not everyone needs this much, but pick something with weather seals, metal housing, and as high of lumen output as you can find.
Also, spare batteries. Check the light once a month to make sure it works and that the batteries haven't burst. Swap the batteries out occasionally for fresh ones. If they fit, put the old ones in something low voltage like your TV remote.
Source: I love flashlights.
Edit: For anyone looking for my ultimate recommendation, my dad has one of these and it's awesome. Quick recharge, comes with charger/caddy base and it's bright.
Hey thank you! You're exactly right-- I chose Sylvania Light Flutes because they were easy to install and pretty cheap. Our area is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to terrarium fodder, so good luck out there!
