Once we got to the airport we kept her in the carrier until we got to our final destination. The stress of getting her back into the carrier (which she always fought doing) we felt outweighed any benefit of letting her out temporarily. Usually the airports that have indoor pet areas are only in international terminals, but that may vary. If your cat is pretty good about being put in her carrier then you could probably take her out and hold her once you get to your gate, then put her back in before boarding. We did put pee pads and her favorite toy, but she didn't pee or anything though, we totally expected her to because she would even pee on the vet, but she didn't :)

The requirements for the carrier is just that it has to be able to fit under the seat. We have this one https://www.amazon.com/Teafco-Airline-Approved-Aero-Pet-Carrier/dp/B000K1SXYY. Sounds like yours is fine but you can usually find the maximum sizes allowed on the airline's websites to make sure.
