So my Ragnar hated the car too. He used to scream (generally in my ear....) he hated it so bad. I felt awful about it but he needed to go to the vet or be in the car to get places that he loved (hiking up a mountain,etc) so we started doing short rides a couple times a week. Particularly to places where he would be happy like the pet store to pick out a new toy or a park to play. He started associating the car rides with good things not just the vet and we went on longer and longer rides. He now LOVES to ride. I admit I also do not put him in a carrier and it is dangerous. Not because I worry about him affecting my driving (getting under the pedals etc) but because if we were to get into an accident he would certainly get thrown around the car and get hurt. But he loves to look around and watch out the window so I did buy a seat buckle that attaches to his harness that will help with that.

I also started training him with a backpack carrier that he can go in and out of the top if I leave open which I almost always do. If we are out in public and he's had enough (people love him and are very curious about Bengals) he'll retreat into it on his own. He just hates being confined but once he figured out the top is normally open (except when he's being cranky out or something like that) he doesn't mind it at all. I also leave it open in the house on the floor so he really thinks of it as his space. I don't like the pod style because it looked like it would trap heat in and since we hike alot I wanted something breathable and comfortable for both of us as well. I also have a very large 14lb (and still growing! ) Bengal so this may be a bit big for the average size cat. It's great for hikes or even just a walk around the park. And it's easy for me to throw over my shoulder in case I need it or not.

Any portable vac will be good for things like crumbs, pebbles, and larger clumps of hair, but for cleaning upholstery, especially inside the car, I use one of these things: https://www.amazon.com/Gonzo-Pet-Hair-Lifter-Furniture/dp/B000209Z2C It actually does a fantastic job of removing hair, is reusable, and easy to clean. It can take a little bit of getting used to to start, but I've honestly not found much better, especially anything reusable.

But more importantly, a back-seat hammock cover has been a GODSEND for my car!! This is the one I use, and it keeps the back seat safe from muddy paws, drool, any potential accidents, and 95% of shed fur. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DQFZGZ0 It is easy to set up and stays in place - also easy to clean since I can just wipe it down, vacuum it, or even throw it in the washer if I absolutely have to. Also has the benefit of hiding the floor of my back seat. I drive a Nissan Cube so I don't have a covered cargo - this thing lets me hide things during shopping trips where I can't drop anything off in between stores.

Before I got that little hammock, I would just keep an extra blanket or a couple towels in the backseat, and that did a fair job at keeping things at least manageable, so long as I remembered to shake them out or replace them every few trips.

Fun! I'll let you know some of my dog gear, but your preferences and dog will be different.

I usually bring three different leashes with me, depending a little on where I'm going. She can't really be off leash, so I take a 30 ft line to give her space to wander or splash in the river on a break. If the trail is too busy or the hike is a pretty short one, this often gets left behind or never used.

A basic 15 ft leash is perfect for hiking with her. It gives her a bit more space, but isn't long enough to cause much trouble getting wrapped around things, and I can easily pull her closer to me when I need. I tied a couple knots in it for easier grabbing and holding at different lengths. I can also use a locking carabiner (I always have a couple on hand) to attach the handle to my backpack for hands-free.

I also love my Tuff Mutt hands-free waist leash. It has two handles if I need to hold her closer, and I really like the bungee. The only downside is that it's a bit heavy for a leash, but I find it's worth the weight, and I'm almost always just doing day hikes so it's fine. I don't know really know how it compares to other hands-free leashes though since it's the only one I've used.

I recently got a Ruffwear Front Range harness for hikes. It is the only harness I've been able to put on her, so I really can't compare much. Seems to fit her comfortably and works well as a back-clip harness. I haven't been able to use it as a front-clip without it sliding around too much. But I don't really need the front-clip when hiking, so I'm pretty pleased with it overall. If my dog wasn't so finicky about harnesses, I'd be trying other options though. You might prefer one with a handle, I've heard good things about the Ruffwear Webmaster.

I currently have an Outward Hound travel bowl for water, but I'm not a huge fan of it. My dog doesn't always drink all the water I pour, so then I've wasted water. And I either have to put a wet bowl back in my bag or clip to the outside and hear the annoying swish of it rubbing against the bag. It's not a big deal, and it works, but I'm eyeing one of these instead.

The other comment covered feeding them, but I might be able to offer advice for flying on a plane with an animal.

I haven't flown with a rabbit before, but I have flown with a cat several times. The carrier fit under the seat (though you may have to use a soft carrier, rather than a hard plastic one. The plastic ones often aren't small enough to fit under the seat, especially if you have both in them).

Unlike what the other person said, they will not let you put them on your lap during take-off and landing, so they MUST be able to fit under the seat. Make sure you aren't seated in an exit row. This is the carrier that I used for my cat (10 pound mainecoon), it should fit both your rabbits unless they are very large. It easily fit under the seat, and she had enough room to comfortably move around inside it. I like it more than some of the other options, because it has mostly closed sides/dark mesh (and the flaps on either end that you can open or close) so they can feel safe and less exposed.

When it comes to going through the security checkpoint, they will likely make you take them out of the carrier and walk through the metal detector with them in your arms. I highly advise getting some sort of harness for them just in case. I'm almost positive they won't let you keep them in the carrier through security. If you're worried about taking them out (bunnies are more easily stressed out than cats), you might be able to call the airport and ask them? See if they'll let you take the carrier through the metal detector. Rabbits are different from cats, so the protocol for them might be different. They absolutely cannot go through the x-ray machine.

I also gave my cat anti-anxiety medication prescribed by her vet (basically a mild sedative to make her really sleepy so she would be less stressed out), but she was still really stressed and scared. I'm not sure if the same thing can be done for bunnies, you could try talking to your vet about it?

Miss Stella loves her Devoted Doggy Booster Car Seat. She totally digs going on adventures.

She is a total treat hound, but these days the only thing she's allowed to have are some veggies and freeze dried chicken. She loves these things though. They turn to dust if you handle them too much, but we just sprinkle the dust on her wet food to encourage her to eat it. :o)

Edit: Oh! And I forgot. My girl gets smelly FAST (probably the tall wet grass she traipses through), so this stuff is awesome. She has super sensitive skin, and it helps alleviate the dry flaky itchy stuff really well.

Both my pup have been road tripping since they were 8 weeks so keep that in mind. We also recently moved from East to West coast with our pups which meant a pretty long road trip (3 14 hour days). Since yours is use to the car a 4 hour road trip shouldn't be a problem as long as he doesn't get car sick.

So make sure you have a copy of vet records (at least proof of shots) with you. A dog first aid kit is good to keep on hand, [I have this one in my car] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CL0PB9W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_gXwdBbKKGXYPY). To prevent car sickness make sure they don't eat an hour or two prior to the trip. Benedryl makes them sleep (1mg per lb) so it can help if they're anxious. Also have your vet's phone number on hand as well as a 24hr emergency clinc for the area you'll be in.

For the ride itself, I stop about every 2-4 hours (whenever I get gas) or if they are acting like they need a potty. They ride in the back seat on a car hammock. I cover it with blankets too for comfort and easy clean up for accidents. It's also suggested to buckle up your dog with a car safe harness, I really only do this if one is riding in the front seat.

For hotels, I like staying with la Quinta but BringFido is a good resource for finding hotels and activities you can do with your dog. When we were in a hotel, we used chairs to block of the area immedietly by the door since our pups would bark when people were loud in the halls. We also left the TV running to help cover up random noises they heard to help prevent barking.

Make sure you bring toys, blankets, treats, water and extra food. Nothing sucks more than trying to find your dog food while you're in a new area. Also would recommend bringing an extra leash and collar just in case.

Firstly, cute dog!

My doggo is currently not allowed in my car, but we have this cover for my girlfriend's car and it stays put very well. The underside has little rubber grippy dots that hold well to the leather seats, there are elastic loops that go around both the front and rear headrests, elastic on the corners that you can use to secure the corners to the rear seat uppers, and extra long straps that velcro which would allow for securing along the bottom of a seat if it was possible. It's not possible in her car, but we manage to tuck some of the excess fabric in between the seat and the sides of the car and it holds tight. Also, there are some padded flaps that are tucked into the rear seats between the bottom and the upper that very securely hold the cover in place. It honestly hardly moves once it's installed.

For door panels, we purchased these but haven't technically used them yet. I imagine it would work fine, and I know it will fit in the FoST (tested it). But it would require applying a little velcro to the door panel if you wanted to get a more secure fit.

As for biting the seat cover, we haven't had that problem with our pup because we spent a lot of time training her on what she is and is not allowed to chew right when we got her (I read a lot about this and was worried she was gonna destroy everything so I was extra prepared, lol). I would recommend throwing a chew toy in the seat with her so she will have something that she enjoys and can chew on while she's in the car. If she's not searching for something to chew on, then you will be able to worry less about her chewing on the seat cover.

I can't comment on how to keep the fur from getting everywhere, though, and this is the main reason why I haven't let my pup ride in my car yet. She sheds like crazy and fur flies everywhere when we open the windows while driving.

Modern guinea pig cages are huge, and many people now use fleece bedding. My cage has four Fleece Flipper floor panels and one kitchen area that I cover with Carefresh bedding. This approach is a little expensive to start, but it's super easy to keep clean. I sweep the flippers every morning (five minutes), change the Carefresh bedding every week (5-10 minutes) and I swap in clean flippers and put the dirty ones through washing machine every other week.

No guinea pig rescue will give you one guinea pig unless you already have one. I paid our local rescue $100 for a bonded pair of neutered male and female. I have three cats and I've had both types. and I prefer the soft one's with a shoulder strap. but I live in NYC and I walk about a 1/2 mile to the Vets.


Getting a cat that dosent want to get into the carrier is much easier with the top door and I'll assume that holds true with a gaggle of kittens


My girl who at one point was 14lbs doesn't like being outside and is constantly moving around even with a towel over the carrier. the soft one is soo much easier whith her moving around. also living in an apt storage space is limited so the soft ones, wins hands down

While I'm definitely pro-seat covers and use one for my dog, I'm actually going to caution you away from one in your situation. I'm a child seat tech, and most child seat manufacturers strongly recommend you do not put anything between the child seat and the bench seat. There are a few exceptions (I think some Britax seats and some Graco seats), but I would definitely check your child seat manual. Even though it seems like a little thing, it could possibly change your child seat dynamics in a crash, and would likely void your child seat warranty.

For your pup, you could still use a single seat cover like those designed for the front seat. A bonus would be that that type wouldn't restrict your center shoulder belt or any of the buckles.

Sincerely hope that didn't come off as preachy; I just wanted to bring up something you may not have thought about already. I hope you find something that works well for you!

I work in the veterinary field and at my hospital we have strong opinions about cat carriers. The best, in my opinion, are the hard-sided ones that open both on the front and on the top. It's easy to get the cat in and out via the top door, it's roomy and stable (won't fall over or get crushed), and it's easy to clean if the pet urinates or defecates in it. I have this one (in addition to four others, some soft-sided) and am very happy with it. You can put a towel or blanket in it to make it comfier for the cat.

Edited to add that I'm also a fan of the last one you posted, mostly because the top is very easy to remove and put back on and it meets all the other criteria above for hard-sided carriers.

We backpack with our dogs. I can try to think of a few...

I'm a little paranoid since I've seen lost dogs on the trail before (seriously our most horrifying trail experience was hearing the cries of a lost and injured dog somewhere off the trail and not being able to locate it), so we keep ours leashed when hiking and tethered at camp. We bought a 20' tether and loop it around a central tree when we set up for the night. They have plenty of room to roam, but can't stray too far.

We have a set of collapsible bowls like these. I keep one clipped to the outside of my pack for water breaks while hiking.

Our dogs carry their own food. We fitted them with packs and make sure to keep the weight at or under 15% of their body weight. Obviously it lightens as the trip goes on. They drink a ton of water while hiking, so keep an extra canteen or two with you. You dont want them over-heating. I know if we pass a creek, our dogs love to take a break to lay in the water and cool off their bellies. Bring at least an extra day's worth of food with you just in case.

We prefer to keep our dogs in the tent at night. They make great radiators when it cools down and they are so tried they sleep like rocks.

Obviously make sure they are updated on their flea and tick meds ahead of time.

Our dog left our previous hammocks looking like the sling that lowered the cow down into the Raptor cage in Jurassic Park. So far after many hours of use (20+) this one looks pristine as the day we got it. Easy to clean, easy to maintain, and easy to set up.

They've also got matching side door covers which is great because our dog drools like he's paid to when in the back of the car.

I flew with my bunny in-cabin on a United flight a few months ago for a coast-to-coast move. I had a good experience with them. I could not find any other airline that allowed rabbits in the cabin in the US. You can even add your pet online (125$ fee/pet) on your reservation. But, I still called afterwards to make sure it was OK. I suggest you buy your tickets early since you have 2 bunnies and they accept a limited number of pets per flight.

When I arrived at the United counter to check my luggage, I told them I had my bunny with me and they only asked if I paid the pet fee. It was really simple. The tricky part is going through security since you'll have to take your bunnies out of their carrier and pass through the metal detector with each of them in your arms. My bunny was wearing a harness so we could hold him tightly while outside the carrier. After that, we were not asked anything about the rabbit for the rest of the trip. But, I would carry a health certificate from your vet just to be sure. Anyway it's a good idea to see a vet a few days before the trip to make sure your bunny is healthy and ready to fly.

I paid an extra $ to get the "Economy Plus" seats with extra legroom and I'm glad I did, otherwise it would have been very tight with my carrier. I was able to put the carrier between my legs after take off to check on my bun, pet him a little and give him some water. This carrier filled the entire space under the seat. Based on the picture of your bunnies, I don't think the two of them would fit comfortably in one carrier, unfortunately.
I second the idea of taking critical care with you, and make sure they eat and drink something on that day and poop. It is a stressful experience, but it should be fine if you are well prepared.

I agree, if they're well socialized and you start them young, it shouldn't be an issue and could be quite easy. None of mine ever had a freak out from travelling. We were set to go on vacation, and had a bad upper resp. flare up with three of our four ratties. We loaded them up in a smaller cage that fit in our car and they went with us from Texas to Virginia to Tennessee and back to Texas so we could monitor them and make sure they were properly medicated. I didn't have anybody else I could trust to handle them properly. That being said, 15 minutes should be a breeze. I have two of these and three regular sized rats fit comfortably in each. Plus, they're easy to clean and my rats can't get a good grip on any part of it to chew a hole in.

We got a 36 inch crate and it's plenty big for our boy (he's around 30 pounds).

Puppia harness is a great starter harness, it's soft and doesn't have a bunch of metal jingling pieces which our puppy HATED on his harness our breeder gave us.

Kibble, check out dog food advisor for reviews and ratings of foods content, we were using grain free salmon and sweet potato from chicken soup for the soul, it's decently priced and well rated I can't find it anywhere atm so we're switching him back to their normal kibble.

Salmon Oil is a lifesaver in the winter, our pup gets terribly dry skin and extremely itchy without it.

Start out with a puppy kong, they sell kong fillers that are cheese and peanut butter flavored, our puppy was pretty picky at first and only ate the cheese one, didn't like frozen kongs either.

I'd start with a Basic Collar here's a Dog Tag Silencer and a Break-away collar for outdoors or dog park. A dog was choked unconscious at our park so I typically just keep our guys ID tags on his harness and don't use a collar, but if you do I definitely recommend a break-away if you are primarily using a harness with it.

My cat doesn't seem to mind. There's a good stretch along the floor he can run across when we play, and I make sure (more like he does) that I play with him two or three times a day. The confined space also means he can jump between the counter, table, and seat freely. The fact they sleep 12-16 hours per day helps. I'd make sure you can take it outside once in a while too. I just got one of these and it's the perfect size for a cat.

He was around 18lbs/13 months at the time and couldnt stand up 100% but could crouch or comfortably lay down. Hes pretty much the same size now, maybe 1.5lbs heavier. I have heard some attendants will allow you to bring it up on your lap, but ours was adamant that it stay at our feet. It zips on top so we would unzip it halfway so we could pet him. I think he was put off by the vibrations of the plane, so he just sorta laid down. We put chews in there for him and he chewed a little, but mostly just put his head down and waited for it to be over.

Depending on the disposition of your cavalier your experience may vary. Brisket almost never barks (unless playing with our other cav) and is very laid back, so we had it easy with him. Now with our new guy I dont know what we are going to do but hes like the tasmanian devil. Good luck!

Sorry to tell you, but dog hair is inevitable. The best solution is the good ol’ vacuum cleaner. You can keep a duster handy to wipe the hair from the seat to the floor and then vacuum later on.

Not sure how big your dog is, but I have a car seat for my Frenchie. I bought this one and it works well. Also helps to prevent paws/claws on the seats.

We also relocated cross country with 2 cats last year, one being a Maine Coon. We flew with Delta. Make sure when you book your flight, the plane is big enough where he/she can fit under the seat. We had to rebook our flight because our original plane was too small.

We also took our cats to the vet before moving. I think you need to take them to the vet and get them cleared for flying, might be an airline regulation. We asked about sedating at the appointment. Sometimes it could give them more anxiety, so our vet gave us a little bit of sedation medication to give them to see how they do on it. They also gave us some pheromone wipes to wipe the carrier with, it supposedly calms them down. You might want to try that.

One of my cats peed so you might want to get pee pads like someone suggested.

My dog used to do this too. Well he didn't cry, but he hugged the back wall of the seat. It's the gap inbetween the bench seat and the back of the front seats, the legroom, that bothers them. Something about it made him worried sick.

Anyway get a dog seat hammock. This one is good because it has a piece that slides inbetween the seat and back cushion on the bench and anchors it in place. Others are probably good too. It has the double effect of keeping your seat free of hair/scratches and makes your dog so much more comfortable with driving. They're really easy to put in or take off too, less than a minute to install.

this guy came to me about 2 months ago. we found him at our apartment complex and he's been a huge blessing! he's one of the best things that's happened to me since one of my childhood pets a couple of years ago.

i like to go out a lot to the park and carry my little guy with me and the item i've listed would help greatly in him getting water :)

I bought the XSE last week and I have 3 corgis (SO MUCH FUR). I haven't had them in the back of my car yet but I already bought a seat cover/hammock. I bought this one because it goes up the sides and my dogs love to stand on their hind legs and watch through the window. This will protect the sides.

I previously had a 2008 Rav4 with fabric seats and they were grey. The dog hair wasn't noticeable but it was a bitch to get it out of the fabric. There was dog hair everywhere and the car just smelled like straight dog. The softex will make it so much easier to clean up. Plus I got all weather floor mats.

I might buy a better one later once the XSE has been around long enough that they've made more covers specific to the seats.

Security isn't the issue. The actual flight is. If your dog is small enough to fly as a carry-on, it's usually a fine experience provided it is crate trained and deals with stress well. Is your dog generally bombproof in other situations? Don't take it if it isn't, because flying can really suck for dogs.

If it needs to be shipped in cargo... don't do it unless you have to. Just board it here in DC instead. Cargo is such a crapshoot.

As a carry on, the requirement for almost all airlines is that the dog must be able to fit entirely under the seat with enough room in its carrier comfortably stand up and move around (example from Southwest). Realistically, that means that the biggest dog that can do this is 20 pounds. This is an example of the largest size carrier that will fit under the seat - it's small, only 18" L x 10.5" H x 11" W. Your dog CANNOT leave the carrier for the duration of the flight, even if it whines or is very upset. It looks like you have a corgi? Measure your dog out, but it could very well be too big if it's in the corgi standard size.

Even as a carry on, it can be a huge hassle. When you book, you need to make sure the aircraft you're on has enough room for a pet. If you get rebooked or the flight is canceled or the aircraft changes.... well, it's on you to make sure it's still okay for your dog. The airline won't always check for you.

The headrest straps don’t interfere with your head or neck at all. One thing is if you want to have 3 people and a dog in the car it’s kind of hard to use.

He really has a lot of room, and he doesn't over heat since it allows a lot of air. We travel in-cabin about 3 times a year. I also like the simple side pocket for all his paperwork and some treats. I don't know if potato has been on a plane before but you might want to check with the vet on some sedatives or anti-anxiety meds. Moose gets really upset during take off and landing and I give him some doggie relaxers (not tranquilizers just a form of doggy xanex) and he does so much better. I definitely understand not wanting to get something that he is going to grow out of, but if he’s going to be in the car a lot in the future it might be good to get him used to being harnessed while he’s young. Just a FTM, but we've been talking about this a LOT for the same reasons. Our bigger dog is also not a fan of the car and our smaller dog tends to scramble his way forward whenever we're not looking.

Two things we love for making the trunk area better:

-A barrier is really nice for keeping them from scrambling forward and endangering everyone by distracting us or stepping on whoever is in their way.

-a hammock helps the more nervous dog relax more. On a flat surface he tends to pace and shake as the car moves, but he lays down and chills in a hammock arrangement.

I this booster seat for my dog coupled with a headrest seatbelt I clip to her harness. For the booster seat, the seat belt goes through the bottom of it to keep it secure. I purchased bc I saw the reviews of people who had gotten into wrecks and their dogs were better off than the driver!

She loves it, it allows hers to see more and sit more comfortably in the back seat while preventing her moving around.

So we use the yourcatbackpack fat cat one sometimes because we got it for free through Instagram and it has a greater weight capacity and pockets but it’s really not his favorite. He seems more cramped inside and is too tall to look out the bubble. And the bottom has bent underneath his weight so it makes it even more cramped inside for him.

Ahh okay. I was thinking real estate or lawyer. So you don't leave empty-handed, here is some of my experience looking for covers for my dogs. If you want something to cover the whole seat and be waterproof, it is going to cost you money. If you get a normal seat cover, it most likely won't be waterproof. There are a lot of waterproof dog covers for a relatively cheap price but do not cover the headrest. From what you described, you would probably prefer to clean the oil of the headrest than pee on a seat.

Here is the exact cover I got two years ago for $37. It is a little hefty but it is waterproof and easy to remove. The hammock part can stay down. It will help protect the leather on the side.

The non-slip coating on the back keeps it in place, the hammock piece that clips up to the front passenger seats keeps my boy from jumping up front or getting my front seats dirty. "Small" is pretty vague, so I'm not sure which litter box you are referring to as they come in various sizes. In fact I think there is an even larger triangle style box above the size I normally buy in the stores.

 

I have these Triangle Litter Boxes, which I wouldn't say are small. It is 10" x 10" x 14" which in my opinion is just fine and doesn't take up too much real estate in their cage. They are also great for your corners as my girls seem to use the ones I have around the room more than the one in their cage. I even used one in this Hard-Sided Travel Carrier after I put Velcro tape on the bottom of it to attach it to the carrier. I was able to put their favorite bed and the litter box in there. I also hung a hammock from the top and hung their food and water bowls off the door. It was only a 5 hour drive, but just another reason I love these litter boxes.

It has velcro slots to fit your seat belts through it. I've only had it for a week but it seems to work. I got this one so our dog doesn't jump into the front seat area.

I do a lot of camping/with my pups.

Depending on what area you're in / if your pups are on anything for ticks, you should probably being a tick remover - something simple like this. If your dog does get a tick, KEEP THE TICK so you can get it tested for Lyme .. (this only really applies if the tick is attached to the dog for 24h+, so make sure to keep checking your dog for ticks).

For hydration, get a collapsible water bowl or a Guply - they make keeping your dog hyrdated super easy.

Depending on weather, you may want to get a sleeping bag for your dog. Ruffwear makes dog sleeping bags, but I'm cheap so I just bought a cheap kids sleeping bag which works fine for my dogs.

Lastly, I had a dog growing up who would get carsick. We just gave him gravol and he was fine (I'm not sure of the dosage, maybe someone else can help me out here).

They're made for doggies, but sure, I don't see why a human couldn't enjoy it!

We originally got it because he was shedding a ton AND throwing up during car rides. Turns out, he was just blowing his winter coat and now sheds next to nothing. The vomiting was from Giardia & Hookworm. No more crazy shedding or vomiting, but I'm happy to keep my car safe and he certainly likes laying on it and watching us drive when he's too pooped to even stand. Sometimes he'll put his paw over it, and I feel like his personal chauffeur... which I guess I am.

I just moved seven hours with my two kitties and I was so stressed about it ahead of time. One kitty is extremely skittish and shy and BOTH are terrible with the car. I have to say I was absolutely shocked with how well it went, so here are the basics of what I did. I highly recommend talking to your vet for advice as well, as they will have good suggests based on your individual cat. Anyway, here goes...

A few months before our trip I took both kitties to the vet for check ups (they were overdue) and asked my vet for advice (one cat pooped on herself on the way there btw). He said seven hours without a litter box is totally fine and that the cats should travel in their regular carriers. I have this carrier and another similar one. He said after the first hour or so in the car to offer water and/or wet food to keep them hydrated, but to expect they might refuse. He also suggested prepping the cats by taking them for short car rides in advance. He did mention sedatives, but I too was skeptical and didn't plan to use them.

After the vet visit I kept both carriers out in our living room. I also gathered up a bunch of old towels and placed them around the house where the cats like to sleep so that they would smell like home. I put treats in the carriers every day or so and also started feeding them in there a few weeks before our move.

I wasn't sure if I should take the vet's advice to go for practice rides, as it seemed to me like it would add more stress. About a week before our move I had to pick my husband up from work, so I decided to pack up the cats to come with me for the 20 minute drive. I couldn't catch one at all, so I just brought the other. What a nightmare! He pooped, peed and vomited on the short drive. When we got home he was a total mess and was drooling and foaming at the mouth. Just the kind of confidence I needed before our seven hour trip. That's when I decided to go for sedatives.

I got the sedatives from the vet and did two test runs with my kitties , one at the lowest dose and one slightly higher, but not the max. It didn't really seem to do a whole lot, but I was nervous to give them the highest dose.

A couple days before the trip I lined their carriers with puppy pads and put in some of the old towels. This gave them a day or so to get used to the set up. Our movers came the day before our drive, so we kept the cats in our house and stayed in a hotel that night. They were pretty freaked out by the empty house, but I left some boxes and towels to make them more comfortable.

On the morning of our move, we went to the house about 90 minutes before we planned to leave, fed the cats their morning wet food, took away their dry food, and gave them the sedatives. Chasing them down for this was a bit tricky, but I just did it really quick.

After that, I cleaned the litter box in hopes that they would go before the trip (ever notice how cats get in the box RIGHT after you clean it?). This worked for one cat, but not the other.

The sedatives seemed to hit a little harder the day of the move and one cat was a total rag doll. I don't think they ate as much that morning since they were already stressed out.

Once they seemed a little loopy we packed them up and were on our way. One cat meowed constantly, but they were both a lot calmer than usual. He quieted down a bit after the first two hours or so, but would still meow off and on.

After we were on the road for about one-two hours we stopped to check on them. I planned not to open their carriers once we were on the road, so I put empty bowls in there and squirted water through the cage into the bowls. Neither were too interested in it. One was so drugged that when I accidentally squirted water in her face she didn't flinch. I also offered them wet food on tiny spoons through the cage. One ate, but the other didn't.

I'm proud to say that we arrived at our final destination in one piece and without any kitty bodily fluids being emitted. One had a slightly raw nose from pushing it against his carrier, but that was minor. He also had the holder from his bowl around his neck, which gave me quite a panic, but he was totally fine. PSA: Do not buy these bowls.

Oh! I almost totally forgot. I bought two Feliway diffusers and put one in our new home a few weeks before the move and one in our old home around the same time. I also purchased rescue remedy and put a few drops behind each kitty's ears before we left. I have no idea if these steps helped, but since the move was overall very smooth, I wouldn't discount them.

One kitty was pretty much at home in our new place right away, but the other took a few days. We didn't have our furniture for about five days, so they had to get creative with hiding places. Our girl cat shoved herself into a tiny cabinet in the bathroom.

Sorry this is so long. I hope I didn't forget anything. I was so stressed about moving my fur babies and it was totally fine. Hopefully you will be too! Let me know if you have any questions!

I got one of these a few months ago. so far it's held up well. It stays in place and helps the dog feel more secure since she cant fall between the seats. It works well to protect the seats from dirt/damage from other things as well.

If you have a really large dog it might not hold up (the straps that hold it up are a bit cheap), but it holds the full weight of my 45 lb dog easily.

It wouldn't work well as a divider, but we use a car harness for our dog regardless. Even if she was 100% trustworthy (not going to climb into front seat/run out of the car off leash) accidents happen.

I have the hammock you linked. It works pretty well, but I only attach one side to the front seats, and fold the back seats down (hatchback) since my dog needs a little more room than the back seat. There are also door covers that might help keep the door trim from getting scratched up, though I don't have those. The dings and scratches from my dog have all come from his toenails. Keep them as short as practical, and use a dremel for trimming instead of clippers, since clippers can leave sharp edges. You might want to toss some cleaner in your trunk to wipe up any slobber or noseprints, and keep a towel/paper towels in the trunk in case of dirty feet/unexpected mud. It can be really hard to get hair from short-coated dogs out of the headliner but if you put on a heavy-duty rubber glove - the kind for washing dishes & stuff - and brush the liner with your hand that will help the hair ball up so you can vacuum it out.

I currently use this cover and this harness with one of the seatbelt hooks that connects the harness to one of the seat belts for my five month old Newfoundland puppy.

It works pretty well and it's made from a super durable fabric. The only downside is that it doesn't have any sides to protect the doors or stop him from going into the floorboards, my biggest issue is that he likes to slip between the door and the side of the hammock to get to the floorboard.

I have a coworker that has a GTI and the seat hammock that he has for his car does have sides, I'll ask him where he got it and I'll post a link once I find out.

Awesome :D glad you guys have that taken care of. I use a top load cat carrier for mine. Easier to pick them up that way instead of trying to coax them out through the front load ones. If he's still little, I'd get one a little smaller so he doesn't have too much space to slide around during the care ride. Lay a towel down for traction, and some rabbits pee when they're scared. If you want to get a bigger once since he'll probably grow into it, add some cushioning in there.

Expect your bunny to be a little scared at the vet :X I'd bring some treats to distract them and a blanket to drape over the carrier in case there are other animals around.

I got these to protect the seats and doors. I've got a 45+lb mix who drooled a lot in the car when he was younger, and these were great protection. I slide a cushion or two under the seat protector to give him a boost up (short legs) so he can actually stick his face out the window.

AND if he's in the back, I always put on the child locks, since it's just a button (not a lever) and much easier for a dog to accidentally hit with paws on the armrest.

This (the size and manueverability of the dog) was not something that was checked when I flew a few times with a dog in a carrier. But keep in mind the reason for it is so that the dog can remain comfortable by repositioning itself and not cause an issue on the flight.

If you do decide to transport the dog, consider helping it reposition mid flight.

Also, are you sure you have the max size carrier? The duffel sized carrier we had was capable of housing a dog larger than 15 pounds.

This delta bag in medium is rated for dogs up to 16 pounds. And while above the size limit, it should not be an issue if you dont make it one.

I got my little guy a car seat where he can look out the window and his whining has completely gone down. It hangs off the car seat head thing and straps across the back. It's nice because you can buckle them in and know they're safe. My buddy can also lay down in the box and sleep or chew on something. Watch out for airbags and keep your pup in the backseat unless your car turns off the airbag when the front seat is not occupied. My pup can be in the front seat because it doesn't turn on the airbag.

We used this carrier for our trip. To get them used to it, we left it open on their play area with toys inside until they felt safe and happy to be inside. They were able to explore it for almost two weeks before leaving.

Very much this. They're determined and will often over-exert themselves while playing or on walks.

I bring a small water-bottle and a portable water-bowl for walks in the summer, that will help keep their throats wet and not quite so raspy. Hard panting can cause their narrow throats to get inflamed, which then restricts the breathing more.

You can also splash a little water on their chest/throats to help keep them cool in warm weather.

There are things you can buy to help keep him safe and secure.

We make sure to run in the early morning when it's cool, or after dark, and make sure she drinks plenty of water during the day. I clip a collapsible bowl (this one - not sure what you're testing for, but this one works fine, and it happens to read 'raise the woof' which is hilarious) to our waist leash and fill it up at drinking fountains if we're going to be far from water, or just let her hop in the river or ponds and drink that every couple miles.

There are a few different options, and some might be better than others depending on the size of your dog. Dogs should wear a harness in the car and not a collar (so it doesn't hurt their neck in an accident), then clip the harness either to a seat belt directly using a dog car seat belt or have them clipped in to a dog car seat. I have a dog car seat for my 2 mini dachshunds and use a baby carseat seatbelt for the backseat of my car. Before that, I had a carseat that sat on the center console of my truck, similarly strapped in. The main thing is to keep the dogs from becoming projectiles or being thrown from the car. Even though they'd love to be in our laps, they're also happy sleeping in the car seat and are so much safer for it.

I bought it as a car seat cover, but it has a handy feature where the front can attach to front seat headrests, creating a barrier. (Take a look at the product photos and you'll see.)

Combine it with high-value treats for staying behind the barrier, and my dog doesn't even think about trying to jump it anymore.

I use this for my car and his harness which I don't have a link to came with a little strap that I could tie to the middle seatbelt and pull through the little slits in the cover. (I think the third picture has a good view of those.)

So any cover with a slit in the middle would probably do well? A little hair and dirt does tend to get in through the slit once in a while, but it's not enough for me to care.

The Sherpa carriers are great. They're very sturdy, and so comfortable that my cat uses hers for a bed! I got her the large size, which seems to work well for an 11-pound cat.

I have two cats and we have one of these for each of them & they’re by far our favorite carrier we’ve used. They have both side and top open options, which we’ve found very useful at various points. We leave them sitting out in the corner of our office and the kittens will even take naps in them (this was something that I saw suggested here and has seemed to make a big difference in our cats comfort level with the carriers). We also usually cover the sides with a towel to limit overstimulation for our shyer cat and since we started doing that she’s been way less stressed about using the carrier.

I also drive a Jetta, just got another one yesterday so in an effort to keep the back seat somewhat clean, i've gotten one of These. So far it's great except for the fact that the one i got reeks of vinyl so i'm attempting to air it out for a few days. Also, this will prevent him from falling behind the front seats and generally keeps him from moving around too much. My dog is 70 pounds so there's not a whole lot of extra room for him.

I've flown with my grown corgi on six different flights now, ranging from 1 to 6-hours all underseat in cabin. Most airlines seem fairly restrictive, so I've only used southwest (only $95 each way) and choose the middle seat with a Sherpa Large carrier; haven't run into any issues so far. Everyone has been really nice and let me open up the carrier in flight so she can pop her head out.

For reference she's about 27 lbs 10" at withers and 22" long - with that carrier she is able to stand up and turn around while under the seat which is pretty spacious. Again I've only used the middle seat because it has the most space though window and aisle would work as well but look more cramped.

I've got a hammock in the back seat which works GREAT. There's no way for her to fall off the seat into the foot-well if I stop short or turn, and the front of the hammock prevents her from jumping up to the front of the car. It says the rear of the top will compress several inches. These carriers aren't made for the animal to stand though - just enough space to travel. So while the height measurement should be fine, you gotta worry about the width - that won't collapse. I'd assume the 0.5" shouldn't make a difference.
